Fire in Kolkata; 7 dead, including policeman and firefighters

Kolkata: Seven killed in Kolkata fire. The fire broke out in an office building on Strand Road in central Kolkata. The dead included four firefighters, a policeman, and a railway security officer.

The bodies of five of the seven dead were found in an elevator in the building. About 25 fire engines arrived on the scene and are trying to put out the blaze. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has arrived in the state. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased.

The fire started at around 6.30 pm on the 13th floor of the New Koila Ghat building. The offices of the Eastern Railway and the South Eastern Railway are located here.

The district administration has sought the permission of the state government to conduct the Thrissur Pooram, saying that the demand of the Devaswom Boards can be considered sympathetically. The decision was taken after discussions between the Devaswom boards and the district administration. Devaswom Board representatives told the media that no change could be made in the ceremonies.
The government has decided to leave the demands of the Devaswom Boards to the government as part of resolving the ongoing dispute with the district administration over the conduct of Thrissur Pooram. The design has been handed over to conduct the Pooram in compliance with the Covid norms .

Representatives of Devaswom Boards, including Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu, told the media. All Devaswom Boards agree that Pooram should be held without any change in the rituals. Delegates told the media that they would not allow a reduction in the number of elephants. Thrissur Pooram is on April 23.

The Paramekavu-Thiruvambadi temples and the eight temples are of the view that there will be no compromise in the conduct of Pooram. None of the 36-hour-long ceremonies from the opening of the south gate to the announcement of the Pooram proclamation should be cut short. Chennai: Actor Vijay Kant’s DMDK has quit the  NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu following a dispute over seat-sharing. Vijay Kant said that the withdrawal was due to not getting the required seat.

Vijay Kant said that there was no consensus on the seat in the three-phase talks. At the same time, he did not say in a statement that he would join another front. The DMDK is the second party to leave the NDA alliance just before the elections.

The DMDK, which had initially demanded 41 seats, insisted on at least 23 seats after negotiations. The AIADMK has promised 15 seats.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways has made it mandatory to carry dual airbags in passenger vehicles. The ministry has ordered that the front passenger along with the driver must have an airbag. The Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways said in a gazette notification that from April 1, 2021, dual front airbags will be standardized for vehicles manufactured. Also, dual airbags are mandatory for vehicles launched from August 31.

The ministry said in a statement that the order was based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. The need for dual airbags at the front for the safety of motorists has long been a necessity. The notification also states that the airbag must comply with the AIS 145 standard under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications. The new decision by the central government is expected to push up car prices again. With this, the price of cars will increase from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000. The front airbag protects the passenger’s face and chest in the event of an accident. The airbag also helps to reduce the severity of the accident.

Gold seized at Karipur Airport; One arrest
