Islamic State

New Delhi: Intelligence agencies have said that bringing Islamic State militants back to India is a security threat. There is evidence that suicide bombers were trained, including women. The government’s move is to take legal action if the matter goes to court.

Former Ambassador KP Fabian had demanded the return of those who had joined IS. Fabian said there was no legal reason not to return and that other concerns were unfounded as he would be in custody in the country.

The national media had reported, citing top officials, that the Center was not interested in repatriating four Malayalee women who had joined IS. Sonia, Merin, Nimisha Fatima, and Rafila are in the Afghan jail.

The security agencies say bringing back these people, who worked with international fundamentalist forces, could create security problems. Therefore, the Central Government is of the view that they should not be returned.

They left India with their husbands in 2016-17 to join IS. They first arrived in Iran and from there to the Quraysh province in Afghanistan.

The husbands of the four were later killed in a missile strike by the US Air Force. As the IS disintegrated in a series of attacks, 403 people, including women and children, who were in IS bases, surrendered to the Afghan government.

The group included people from 13 countries, including India.

The Center said it would consider changing the vaccine interval only after conducting scientific studies in the Indian context. It was reported yesterday that reducing the interval between two doses of the vaccine would increase its effectiveness. This was followed by an explanation from the Central Government.

NITI Ayog member VK Paul said there was no need to worry about intervals between vaccine doses. There is no immediate change in vaccine interval. The interval was increased to give at least one dose of vaccine to the maximum number of people. He added that this has enabled many people to be vaccinated.

He added that changes in vaccine intervals should be made only after seeking expert advice. There have been reports that increasing the dosage of the Covshield vaccine may have the opposite effect. This was followed by an explanation from the Central Government.

Mehul Choksi

Rosso: Dominica High Court has denied bail to Mehul Choksi, accused in a bank loan fraud case. The lawyer granted bail to Mehul Choksi, citing his physical disability. However, the court denied bail, citing the possibility of Choksi escaping from Dominica.

It was forcibly brought to Dominica from Antigua itself. Bail should be granted due to physical disability. Mehul Choksi’s lawyer had said in his bail application that he would remain in Dominica until the legal proceedings were over, even if bail was granted.
Lawyer Lennox Lawrence, appearing for the government, said Mehul Choksi was likely to have eloped if he released on bail and that Interpol had issued a red notice against him.

He added that his health problems were not a reason to grant bail and that adequate medical care would be provided.

Choksi is an expatriate from India. From there the person who arrived in Antigua can travel anywhere. He, therefore, told the court that bail should not be granted. The Dominican court’s decision not to grant bail would be a major setback for Mehul Choksi.

Mehul Choksi had approached the High Court after the Rosso Magistrate’s Court denied him bail. Choksi is accused of entering the island illegally. The Dominican government then declared Choksi a “prohibited immigrant” in the country. Mehul Choksi, who left India, has been in hiding in Antigua since 2018. He disappeared on May 23. From there, the lawyer argued that Choksi was being abducted to Dominica.

Mehul Choksi and Neerav Modi left India after embezzling Rs 13,500 crore from Punjab National Bank. Both are currently under CBI investigation. In addition, Choksi faces two lawsuits in Antigua and Barbuda. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had sought to release Choksi. A Dominican court on Monday will hear a petition seeking Choksi’s extradition to India.
