Kerala to emerge as a blockchain hub of India

Kochi:  Kerala will produce 20,000 professionals in blockchain in the next two years, in what could be a major revolution in this emerging technology in India.

“The coming two years are crucial for us as we plan to produce 20,000 blockchain experts. The emphasis is on enhancing the quality of manpower steered by young startup companies. This is a great opportunity for us to build expertise in next-generation technology and knowledge sharing,” State IT Secretary M Sivasankar said here .

He was inaugurating the second edition of  two-day conclave – ‘BlockHash Live 2019’ which began here yesterday.

Organised by the Kerala Blockchain Academy (KBA) in association with Allianz Technology, India, the event saw the industry leaders making a strong case for leveraging the potential of blockchain technology for public through capacity building and promoting research, development and entrepreneurship.

“Blockhash Live has been a great learning platform for us. We use this platform to check what we have achieved, our learning and future footprint,” said Mr Sivasankar .

Described as the most promising cutting edge technological innovation after the advent of Internet, Blockchain technology provides a tamper-proof and immutable data storage system and transparency in digital applications. It has the potential to disrupt business domains such as cyber security, banking services, insurance, trade finance and retail by performing quicker, secure and transparent transactions, he said.

In his welcome address, Dr Saji Gopinath, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), emphasized on the importance of bringing together blockchain experts across the world to discuss on the business potential of this new age technology.

All the dignitaries at the inauguration spoke about the significance of blockchain system in various industries with collaborative opportunities in leveraging the technology for public good, and positioning Kerala as the country’s blockchain hub. The dignitaries included Mr. Rahul Sinha, Head, Cross Pillar Services, Allianz Technology, India, Dr Jane Thomason, CEO, Fintech Worldwide, and Mr. Sunil Raveendran, Chief Technical Architect & Global Blockchain Centre of Competence (Lead) – Allianz Technology India.

The inauguration was followed by a presentation by Marta Piekarska-Geater, Director of Ecosystem- Hyperledger, on ‘Will Blockchain become real?’ Focusing on the importance of blockchain and its usage in various organisational structures, she said, “It is the right time for organisations to focus on the role of blockchain. In the last four years, we have observed how enterprises are looking at real-life solutions using blockchain.”

She also dwelt upon the potential of blockchain and how it can be used in various industries through easy availability of open source collaboration like Hyperledger. “It is never pay-to-play at Hyperledger. Anyone can participate whether your company is a member or not. The collaborative software development approach ensures transparency in the process.”

Cyberlaw expert advocate Mr. Nappinai NS spoke about the importance of blockchain laws and regulations to enable innovation.

Kerala Govt releases tourism statistics of 2018

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government has released the complete statistics of tourism activities in the state during 2018, including the total number of foreign and domestic visitors and foreign exchange yielded by the sector.

The compendium, Kerala Tourism Statistics 2018, was released at a function here by Hon’ble Minister for Co-operation, Tourism, and Devaswom, Shri Kadakampally Surendran.

“This detailed compilation of the entire statistics of the calendar year 2018 will serve as a basic document to evaluate the present scenario and chalk out future activities in the tourism sector. This will be guide for the administrators, stake-holders in the industry and researchers”, Shri Surendran said.

The statistics carried by the document include data on total the footfall of tourists to the state,   district-wise break-up and figures pertaining to foreign and domestic visitors to various destinations. Also, it contains full details regarding the foreign exchange earned through tourism during the year and it’s district-wise figures.

Tourism Secretary Smt Rani George IAS, Tourism Director Shri P Bala Kiran IAS, Additional Director Shri Krishna Teja IAS, Additional Secretary BS Prakash and Research Officer Shri C G Rajesh attended the function.  

ICFOSS to conduct training in LaTeX

The capacity building program is meant for faculty, research scholars and Post Graduate students.

Telerehabilitation Unit at NISH to be opened on Thursday

Thiruvananthapuram: The newly set up Telerehabilitation Unit of the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) will be inaugurated on December 12 (Thursday), as an initiative to reach out and help children with communication disorders.

State Minister for Education, Prof C. Raveendranath, will inaugurate the facility at a function at Jimmy George Indoor Stadium here, organized by the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, as part of ‘Samarppanam: 2019; Bhinnasheshi Award Nisha.’

The unit will extend speech and language services online to children with neurodevelopmental communication disorders such as language disorder, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), specific learning disorder, global developmental delay (GDD) and Cerebral palsy, who are incapable of attending therapeutic services due to geographical and physical constraints.

The unit comes under the Department of Neurodevelopmental Sciences of NISH.

Digital documents can not be hand over to Dileep: Trial Court

Kochi: The trial court has ruled that digital documents in actress attack case cannot be handover to Dileep. The court also rejected Dileep’s plea.

Dileep had filed a plea seeking all the documents of the case. It was pointed out that he still had 32 documents to be obtained.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed Dileep’s plea seeking footage of the case. The visuals could be checked if necessary. Accordingly, Dileep has filed an application in the trial court to examine the footage. Court time is set for next Monday.

Dileep is the eighth accused in the case. The ninth accused Sanal Kumar is absconding. The court ordered to introduce him in the court today.

Design Week: Dec 12-14 Kochi event to stir ideas on sustainable infrastructure

Kochi: Experts and enthusiasts from across the globe will discuss the latest trends in design and architecture to explore ways towards building sustainable infrastructure, as the country’s biggest such annual event is set to be held here this week amid exhibitions, installations and contests besides cultural shows and a unique food fair, equip it with futuristic technology and architecture to deal with natural calamities more effectively.

The second edition of Kochi Design Week (KDW), to be held in Bolgatty Island of the city for three days from Thursday, aims to chart a long-term development mission for Kerala through futuristic technology and architecture that goes beyond mere replacement of lost infrastructure or creation of new facilities.

Being organised chiefly by the state government’s Department of Information Technology in association with Asset Foundation, the December 12-14 KDW provides creative minds a platform to brainstorm on newest facets of design and architecture.

Close to 100 speakers will address sessions and lead workshops as well as masterclasses at the event that will witness an assemblage of 3,000 design professionals, architects, interior designers, thought leaders, policymakers and government officials besides the general public. Studded with expos, summits and workshops on design as well as architecture, it will also host an international blockchain summit and an inclusive platform, titled ‘Design Open’, that makes design accessible to all.

Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan will address the valedictory function of KDW on December 14. The inaugural session will have top industrialist Mr S D Shibulal as the main speaker in his capacity as the chairman of the High Powered IT Committee under the state government.

The debut edition of KDW, held last year, had showcased technology options of use in any rebuilding phase as installations for various stakeholders to experience them. “This time, we have an array of independent events with design as the common thread,” points out Shri M Sivasankar, Secretary (IT), Government of Kerala. “The upcoming KDW facilitates inquisitive individuals to interact through workshops, panel discussions, keynote speeches and exhibitions. It’s a great opportunity to learn more from the industry experts on the future of design.”

KDW 2019 special officer Arun Balachandran, who is Kerala Chief Minister’s Fellow (IT), notes that the event has come amid a general realisation about the need for sustainable ecosystems. “The huge success of the first edition of KDWhas made everyone realise the criticality of the role ‘design’ plays in revamping our cities and societies,” he adds.

Among the speakers at KDW will be International Council of Design President-Elect Johnathon V Strebly, World Design Organisation CEO Srini R Srinivasan, CRG Architects founder-partner Carlos R Gomez, ARG Design CEO-architect Gita Goven, its Managing Director Alistair Rendall, Habitat Technology Group architect G Shankar and architect- academician Kavita Marugkar.

The list of speakers also includes Oscar-winning sound designer Resool Pookutty, contemporary artist Bose Krishnamachari of Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), HPIC Chairman S D Shibulal, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, IxDA president Alok Nandi of Architempo, Amazon senior manager Shibu Damodharan, Microsoft Country Head Lathika S Pai, Accenture MD Charulatha Ravi Kumar, Titan Company Chief Design Officer Revathi Kant, Thomas Garvey of Carleton University, Biren Ghose of Technicolour India, Lydia Thornley of ISCA London, David Ludlow of University of West England, Marta Piekarska-Geater of Hyperledger, Robby Schwertner of Austria’s CryptoRobby and Jane Thomason of Fintech Worldwide.

Some of the other prominent speakers, besides Mr Sivasankar and Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose, are National Institute of Design former director Pradyumna Das, IIT-Mumbai Industrial Design Centre head G V Sreekumar, Kerala Startup Mission CEO Saji Gopinath, and Asset Homes MD V Sunil Kumar.

While the Blockchain Summit, titled Block Hash Live, will discuss the business potential of the technology-driven new age, Design Open is being curated with IxDA Global as partner.

The KDW will host alongside it Maker Fest 2019, facilitating the country’s largest congregation of youngsters with an innovative mind. Conceived as the Indian continuation of Maker Faire held in the US, the fest brings together makers, innovators, technologists, enthusiasts and artists from different parts of the country. It will showcase their collaborations and share the delegates’ ideas, projects, products and activities.

There will also be cultural programmes on all the three evenings. A programme fusing traditional Kerala arts in a way that appeals to new-age sensibilities will be staged on December 12 evening, while Pragathi Band and Thaikkudam Bridge will present music shows on December 13 and 14, respectively. Another attraction will be a food festival, with focus on design as much on variety, tastes and cultures.

Further, the KDW is holding a competition for students in Kerala to come out with creative ideas towards rebuilding the state’s infrastructure in the wake of floods this monsoon and last year. The candidates of the ‘Kerala Design Challenge’ will express their vision through write-ups, posters, paintings, photographs and short films to vie for cash awards totalling Rs 1 lakh, according to International School of Creative Arts that is organising the contest as a creative education partner of the KDW.

A highlight of the KDW 2019 will be the charting of an exclusive ‘Design Island’ for the hosting of the annual event and setting up of design installations across Kochi’s high-visibility areas, including shopping malls and the airport, besides laying special tracks for design architecture and interior designs.

MTB Kerala: Cycle rally at Palakkad on Friday

Palakkad: Cyclists will take out a rally along a scenic stretch of rugged Palakkad this Friday as a publicity event for next week’s MTB (Mountain Bike) Kerala in neighbouring Wayanad district.

Named ‘Get A Cycle, Get A Life’, the December 13 show here will see the cyclists riding a total distance of 30 km. The rally will begin from the Palakkad Fort in the city and proceed to Malampuzha Dam via Kalpathy heritage village and Kava before returning to the starting point, organisers said.

The Palakkad District Tourism Promotion Council and the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Council are organising the forenoon rally with the idea of spreading the message about cycle as the best means of transportation for personal health and nature conservation.

A hot-air balloon event will be held alongside the rally.

The upcoming 6th edition of MTB, which is billed as the country’s most spectacular and challenging biking race, will be held in Manathavady from December 20 to 22. Organised by the state government’s Department of Tourism, the races for biking professionals and amateurs from India and abroad will see the participants negotiating a challenging 5-km stretch along Priyadarshini Tea Environs at an altitude of 3,000 feet in the Western Ghats.

Being held under the aegis of Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, District Tourism Promotion Council (Wayanad) and Cycling Federation of India, MTB will be hold races in three categories: International Cross Country, National Cross Country – Men, and National Cross Country – Women.
