The difference between old generation Malayalam filmmakers and new generation is apparent. The new generation moviemakers though imbibe techniques from the west, won’t forget the root and our culture, which when blends bring in an entirely unique product. The movement which started with Big B with Amal Neerad at the helm is going from strength to strength. Like its predecessors, Chappa Kurishu is more about style than narrative.

The film takes place in a black-and-white world in the city of Cochin where the streets are wet, where the distance between rich and the poor are longer than that between a desert and an ocean. The story takes us to the lives of two men, one hapless and the other wealthy; then a phone with some very personal information comes in between them.

Chappa Kurishu produced by Listin Stephen, the producer of Traffic is not an adaptation of any film. The film‘s byline ‘based on a 1000 true stories’ is perfect match to the movie. Subtle acting, natural dialogues, real like fights are admirable, though the film losses its punch somewhere along the line. Ramya Nambeesan, Fahad Fazil and Vineeth Sreenivasan have done excellent work.

The camera by Jomon is aesthetically harsh which reminds us of Mahesh Bhatt’s films. Editing by Don Max is ok. Many f words have been censored.

After Big B and Bridge scenarist R. Unni is back with a script which needs a little more polishing. The film interlaced in romance and need for power must have given artistic satisfaction to its makers. In the beginning, romance was so delightful but later it started to hinder with the pace of the film. Films language is of the common world which every one lives. The characters are vivid and the film talks more with less dialogues.

The film is directed by Sameer Thahir who was the cameraman in Big B. Chappa Kurishu asks clamorously the question to audience if they  have become matured enough to handle films like this, now its audience’s responsibility. Movie lovers and critics will love the film though it may not attract mass audience, who still needs comedy and colorful songs.  The story is timeless, the images vibrant, the acting solid, action raw and mood erotic (at times).

After Salt and Pepper which was another new generation flick, Chappa Kurishu will bring young audience to theatre. This shows the rush of new blood into Malayalam industry, who understand international films and celebrate its aesthetics.

The sepia tone with which the audience carries back from theatre shows the film has a heart and technical artistry. The movie is a must watch for the effort these people have put onto it. Chappa Kurishu is the film for movie buffs which redefine the traditional qualities of a thriller. It will surely be a picture that will be respected and idolized by viewers for its creative elegance, sweeping performances and technical genius.

Look at these guys and you could the future, and it seems to me that our future is bright.

Malayalam Movie Collector Review

Movie : Collector

Language: Malayalam

Cast: Suresh Gopi, Mohini, Nedumudi, Rajeev, Ananya, Biju Pappan, Sree Hari, T.P. Maadhavan, Krishna Kumar, Chali Pala, Baburaj, Abu Salim, Manka Mahesh, Ambika Mohan

Producer: Abdul Azeez

Director: Anil C. Nair

Music Director: Raghu Kumar

Review By : Thanseer

If Chappa Kurishu was a breath of icy cold fresh air, Collector was a dusty hot wind. This film comes from the old school of Shaji Kailas, Joshie, and I.V Shashi. Anil C. Menon’s fourth flick after Matsaram, Ben Johnson and Rashtram was a rerun of old films written by Renji Panicker. The film couldn’t make the impact which were made by the former, simply because the film, story, dialogue, acting, editing, bgm and all were outdated. This kind of loud mouth film would have been a super hit if it were released 10 years ago, but Collector had a chance if it was multistar having  Mohanlal . Christian Brothers is an example.

Yesteryear beauty Mohini comes as mayor. Yamini Sharma as ACP is another forgettable character. The characters are all superficial. The family track which reminds audience of Thandavam is so silly and cannot be taken for face value. Nedumudi Venu, Babu Raj, Abu Salim all enacted their one dimensional characters.

Suresh Gopi as Avinash Varma is the nth portrayal of same character. Movie tells the story of district Collector Avinash Varma who gets transferred to Cochin to deal with the venomous land mafia. From the day he takes charge the battle between the collector and antagonist starts and it goes on and on and on and on, with hero banging into the villains, crashing their vehicles, their buildings etc. The gun shots are never ending and the soundtrack sawing away at thrilling music. Just because script has such endless sequences it doesn’t make it necessary in a film. Scenes are to be made to drive a story forward and not simply to manifest shapeless, haphazard violence. Here the villains are like WWF wrestlers who are down but usually not out.

The film has nothing new except a good suggestion for media to not to give news on harthals and thus not become the tongue of petty politics which destroy our state.

The 4 film old director Anil C. Menon who hasn’t came out of the ‘The King’ hangover is repeating those old films. The film’s background music is too loud for the current sophisticated young audience. Anil C. Menon is an able director and he should do something different. It is pathetic that he doesn’t realize those ramping shots, white flashes don’t sell tickets.

The film is advisable for those who enjoy regular action flicks from Suresh Gopi; this film won’t disappoint them a bit.

Taste Of Kerala Acquires A New Flavour From July 17th

0

Taste of Kerala, one of Amrita TV’s most highly rated programmes that has tallied over 225 delicious episodes to its credit will undergo a change–over, in both its flavor and ingredients from Sunday, July 17th at 12.30 noon.

Taking over the anchoring reins will be a smart, chic young model from Bangalore, to help bring a fresh, feminine touch that is more in tune with the woman’s domain of cookery show. Roaming the thoroughfares and by lanes on her custom-made bike in search of novel and original tastes, Serah will present time-tested recipes of the unsung ‘chefs’ in ordinary kitchens who concoct gastronomical masterpieces on a daily basis.

Next, Taste of Kerala expands its horizons to bring travelogue within its gambit, so that it becomes a journey of discovery that uncovers not just the cuisine, but also highlights the hotspots and culture of a locality. It travels to remote villages holding fast to its traditions, to faraway hamlets lying off the beaten track and goes on a sight seeing tour, before settling down to enjoy the gourmet dishes of its native housewives. Sometimes it drops in at celebrity kitchens to collect their favourite preparations.

The new avatar of Taste of Kerala launches itself with a celebrity episode involving the cast and crew of the newly released Salt N Pepper, a love story revolving around 2 middle aged foodies who fall for each other when they collaborate to make an 8-layaered pudding. The show joins Mythili, Baburaj, Ashiq Abu etc as Baburaj the reel cook shows off his real life culinary skills, dishing up Kappa and Mutton Ularthiyathu while the others join in the chopping, slicing and sautéing heartily.

Taste of Kerala had transformed cookery shows in Kerala from studio-based chef presentations to home baked recipe series, delivered hot from the hearth. Now, by becoming a travelogue-cookery show, Taste of Kerala literally lives up to its name, so that the viewers can savour the taste, sights , sounds and the very ambience of Kerala.

Movie : Film Star

Banner : Wide Screen cinema
Cast : Kalabhavan Mani, Dileep, Thalaivasal Vijay, Muktha, Ramba, Vijayaraghavan, Salimkumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Ashokan, Devan, Sadhique, Narayanankutty, Mukundan, Kottayam Nazeer and others
Music Director : Benny Johnson, Vijayan Poonjar
Producer : Joseph Thomas
Director : Sanjeev Raj

Review By : Thanseer

Many successful films have told the stories which happen inside film industry. Director Sanjeev Raj’s The Film star is some what different from the stories which were earlier made on the industry.

Nandan is a handicapped man who lives in a slum. He has written a story which has some political significance. With this story he attempts to meet super star Surya Kiran. But he could not impress the actor and Surya Kiran fires Nanadan for disturbing him. In his distress he throws away the script and goes back to his work place. Surya Kiran reads the script and get impressed. He announces the film; from here the film reveals the story of an old vendetta.

The movie had a good story line but have faltered in the script and making stages. The characters are vindictive and very predictable. Sanjeev Raj’s earlier film was Kunchacko starrer Five Fingers

Movie ‘Film Star’ is more a Mani flick than a Dileep film. From Pappy Appacha every film by Dileep was a commercial success. Film star is an attempt to make a good film though the climax portion is a bit stale, but some scenes if taken well could have made a very lasting impression on viewers mind.

The film and the film inside the film, tells the story of a local communist leader Raghavan’s life and death.

The film is more sentimental and gives less to be merry. Dileep has acted well, Mani as Surya Kiran is fine. Mukhtha and Ramba come in some scenes. Thalaivasal Vijay as Raghavan is solid portrayal of a communist leader. Ashokan comes as director and Vijayaraghavan has a meaty role. The character played by Suraj doesn’t have depth and Salim Kumar arrives in two or three scenes.
On the technical front the film has little new to offer. Camera by Saloo George and editing by P.C Mohanan failed to impress. The suspense is not ok. The director succeeds in keeping viewers engrossed in many scenes. Sanjeev Raj seems to have put great effort in this film.
The song with Ramba and Mani were unnecessary. The film is the kind we used to watch 10 years ago. The main problem with this film is that the film doesn’t stand in reality or in fiction.

The film has been made in many schedules plus the release dates have been postponed more than once, this all seems to have affected the box office.

Amrita TV Launches New Classic Serial Artha Chandrante Rathri

Arth Chandrante Rathri  is a  compelling serial that is at once touching and stirring.  Adapted from a landmark novel of international repute, this is a tale of rugged characters and raw emotions, unfolding gradually over two generations of feudal lords and peasant farmers . The bitter personal feuds between them pits brother against brother as the characters indulge in bloody reprisals that  mows down kith and kin. The new serial will be telecast Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Amrita TV from July 4th .

The story is set against the rustic splendor of an agrarian society. The most popular man in the entire village is Balan, the man with the Midas touch who can reap gold from the earth. He sets an example with his hard work and diligence, always willing to go the extra mile for the well being of his family. But there are envious eyes too focused on Balan’s success, watching him expand his acreage with jealous resentment, notably that of the feudal lord, Chandrasekharan.

In keeping with the feudal tradition of overcoming adversaries with deceit and duplicity, Sekharan too uses treachery to trap his unsuspecting foe. He ensnares Balan with false charges and succeeds in convincing the authorities, with fat bribes adding weight to his arguments, about Balan’s guilt. He is hauled off to the station and brutally assaulted by the police.

Balan is mauled, punched and cudgeled within an inch of his life. Even as he lies bleeding, his body a welter of wounds, none of the villagers dare to come forward to help him, such is the dread that Sekhar awakens in them. He succumbs to his injuries, dying in agony and humiliation. Seething with rage at the landlord’sknavishness, Madhavan, Balan’s eldest son  repays the debt, shooting him to death one night under the cover of darkness. He pays for the crime with 8 years of his youth in prison.

Madhavan returns home after serving his jail term, a stranger in the village where he had grown up. He feels like an intruder, out of place in familiar surroundings, estranged and alienated from his old friends and relatives. He slowly realizes that during his years in prison, Sajan his younger brother had gravitated towards Chandrasekharan’s family and that he is now hand in glove with them. It is more than Madhavan can bear as he finds it difficult to comprehend how Sajan can cozy up to his father’s murderers.

Directed by Sudheesh Sankar, the most competent director of our times in Malayalam television, and with powerful actors like Srelakshmi and Anand donning the central roles, the serial would be a compelling view, drawn in stark colours on the bosom of nature. On the surface, it is ostensibly a story of social realism that depicts the clash of classes in Indian feudal society, where overloads maintain their fiefdoms by duping the simple peasants; of village feuds passed down from generation to generation in an endless cycle of vengeance and retribution. On a more subtle level, it is an universal tale of the anguish  of alienation and the despair of loneliness of the individual.

The serial will be telecast every weekday at  9.00pm from July 4th .
