New Delhi: The fourth phase of Jharkhand assembly elections preparations for the voting was completed. Polling will be held in 15 constituencies in four districts – Dhanbad, Deogarh, Giridih and Bokaro on tomorrow. The polling booths will be held in all five constituencies affected by the polls at 3 pm and the remaining 10 seats at 5 pm. Chief Election Officer Vinayakumar Choubey said all the polling officers will arrive in the afternoon.

Around 10,000 security personnel have been deployed to facilitate the poll. Meanwhile, the campaign for the fifth phase of voting was fueled. Polls for 16 constituencies will be held on March 20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the election meeting in Dumka later this afternoon.

Kathmandu: At least 14 people, including three children, were killed when a bus toppled in Sindhupalchok, Nepal. The bus was traveling from Kalin Chok in Dolaka district to Bhaktapur. The bus falls into a 100-meter depth gorge.

At least 18 people were injured in the accident. The condition of three of them is critical. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. Police inspector Navaraj Nupan said the deceased not been identified. Meanwhile, the search for the bus driver who escaped from the accident is continuing.

Police suspect that the accident was caused by over speeding on unfinished sections of the road.

Kerala to emerge as a blockchain hub of India

Kochi:  Kerala will produce 20,000 professionals in blockchain in the next two years, in what could be a major revolution in this emerging technology in India.

“The coming two years are crucial for us as we plan to produce 20,000 blockchain experts. The emphasis is on enhancing the quality of manpower steered by young startup companies. This is a great opportunity for us to build expertise in next-generation technology and knowledge sharing,” State IT Secretary M Sivasankar said here .

He was inaugurating the second edition of  two-day conclave – ‘BlockHash Live 2019’ which began here yesterday.

Organised by the Kerala Blockchain Academy (KBA) in association with Allianz Technology, India, the event saw the industry leaders making a strong case for leveraging the potential of blockchain technology for public through capacity building and promoting research, development and entrepreneurship.

“Blockhash Live has been a great learning platform for us. We use this platform to check what we have achieved, our learning and future footprint,” said Mr Sivasankar .

Described as the most promising cutting edge technological innovation after the advent of Internet, Blockchain technology provides a tamper-proof and immutable data storage system and transparency in digital applications. It has the potential to disrupt business domains such as cyber security, banking services, insurance, trade finance and retail by performing quicker, secure and transparent transactions, he said.

In his welcome address, Dr Saji Gopinath, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), emphasized on the importance of bringing together blockchain experts across the world to discuss on the business potential of this new age technology.

All the dignitaries at the inauguration spoke about the significance of blockchain system in various industries with collaborative opportunities in leveraging the technology for public good, and positioning Kerala as the country’s blockchain hub. The dignitaries included Mr. Rahul Sinha, Head, Cross Pillar Services, Allianz Technology, India, Dr Jane Thomason, CEO, Fintech Worldwide, and Mr. Sunil Raveendran, Chief Technical Architect & Global Blockchain Centre of Competence (Lead) – Allianz Technology India.

The inauguration was followed by a presentation by Marta Piekarska-Geater, Director of Ecosystem- Hyperledger, on ‘Will Blockchain become real?’ Focusing on the importance of blockchain and its usage in various organisational structures, she said, “It is the right time for organisations to focus on the role of blockchain. In the last four years, we have observed how enterprises are looking at real-life solutions using blockchain.”

She also dwelt upon the potential of blockchain and how it can be used in various industries through easy availability of open source collaboration like Hyperledger. “It is never pay-to-play at Hyperledger. Anyone can participate whether your company is a member or not. The collaborative software development approach ensures transparency in the process.”

Cyberlaw expert advocate Mr. Nappinai NS spoke about the importance of blockchain laws and regulations to enable innovation.

Kerala Govt releases tourism statistics of 2018

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government has released the complete statistics of tourism activities in the state during 2018, including the total number of foreign and domestic visitors and foreign exchange yielded by the sector.

The compendium, Kerala Tourism Statistics 2018, was released at a function here by Hon’ble Minister for Co-operation, Tourism, and Devaswom, Shri Kadakampally Surendran.

“This detailed compilation of the entire statistics of the calendar year 2018 will serve as a basic document to evaluate the present scenario and chalk out future activities in the tourism sector. This will be guide for the administrators, stake-holders in the industry and researchers”, Shri Surendran said.

The statistics carried by the document include data on total the footfall of tourists to the state,   district-wise break-up and figures pertaining to foreign and domestic visitors to various destinations. Also, it contains full details regarding the foreign exchange earned through tourism during the year and it’s district-wise figures.

Tourism Secretary Smt Rani George IAS, Tourism Director Shri P Bala Kiran IAS, Additional Director Shri Krishna Teja IAS, Additional Secretary BS Prakash and Research Officer Shri C G Rajesh attended the function.  

ICFOSS to conduct training in LaTeX

Thiruvananthapuram: International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) is conducting a three-day hands-on training program in LaTeX, from December 19 to 21.

The capacity building program is meant for faculty, research scholars and Post Graduate students.

Telerehabilitation Unit at NISH to be opened on Thursday

Thiruvananthapuram: The newly set up Telerehabilitation Unit of the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) will be inaugurated on December 12 (Thursday), as an initiative to reach out and help children with communication disorders.

State Minister for Education, Prof C. Raveendranath, will inaugurate the facility at a function at Jimmy George Indoor Stadium here, organized by the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, as part of ‘Samarppanam: 2019; Bhinnasheshi Award Nisha.’

The unit will extend speech and language services online to children with neurodevelopmental communication disorders such as language disorder, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), specific learning disorder, global developmental delay (GDD) and Cerebral palsy, who are incapable of attending therapeutic services due to geographical and physical constraints.

The unit comes under the Department of Neurodevelopmental Sciences of NISH.

Digital documents can not be hand over to Dileep: Trial Court

Kochi: The trial court has ruled that digital documents in actress attack case cannot be handover to Dileep. The court also rejected Dileep’s plea.

Dileep had filed a plea seeking all the documents of the case. It was pointed out that he still had 32 documents to be obtained.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed Dileep’s plea seeking footage of the case. The visuals could be checked if necessary. Accordingly, Dileep has filed an application in the trial court to examine the footage. Court time is set for next Monday.

Dileep is the eighth accused in the case. The ninth accused Sanal Kumar is absconding. The court ordered to introduce him in the court today.
