Gujarat Morbi suspension bridge accident; Municipal Corporation Chief Officer suspended

Ahmedabad: Morbi Municipal Corporation Chief Officer has been suspended in the Gujarat Morbi bridge accident. On the last day, the suspension bridge collapsed in which 135 people fell.

At the same time, authorities said that rescue operations have ended in the incident. So far 135 bodies have been found in the five-day search. The suspension bridge across the Machu river in Morbi collapsed on Sunday.

It is concluded that no one can be found at present. State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Harshad Patel said that this is why the rescue operations have been stopped. The Indian Coast Navy and the National Disaster Response Force were leading the rescue operations with the help of local bodies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the accident site on Tuesday. The Gujarat government has also appointed a five-member committee to study the accident in detail and provide proper assistance to those affected. Four people have been arrested out of the nine who were found guilty in the incident. The Oreva Group was awarded the contract for the renovation and maintenance of the 135-year-old suspension bridge. Two managers and two workers of the company have been arrested.

New Delhi: Supreme Court says that ED can also take action against those who give bribes. The court directed that the ED can file a case against the bribe payers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

Bribery is also an offense under the Prevention of Corruption Act and falls under the purview of the PMLA, the court said. The Supreme Court issued the order on a petition filed by the ED Chennai Zonal Office.

Governor’s show cause notice is illegal; VCs approached High Court

Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from 3 countries

New Delhi: The central government has decided to grant Indian citizenship to minorities who have migrated from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Citizenship is granted to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians settled in two districts of Gujarat. Notably, it has been granted under the Citizenship Act, 1955, instead of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA).

According to a notification by the Union Home Ministry, District Collectors are authorized to grant Indian citizenship under Section 5 to Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian immigrants residing in Anand and Mehsana districts of Gujarat. Such people residing in these two districts of Gujarat should submit their applications online. These will be checked by the Collector at the district level.

The application and its reports are simultaneously accessible online by the central government. The Collector will conduct an inquiry for the necessary verifications as to whether the applicant is eligible for citizenship. They are forwarded to institutions for verification. After all these procedures, if the Collector is satisfied that the applicant is suitable, he will be issued an Indian citizenship or naturalization certificate.
