lyricist Gireesh Puthenchery passes away

Gireesh Puthenchery (48), one of the most prolific lyricists of Malayalam cinema of the last two decades, died of brain haemorrhage at a private hospital in Kozhikode on Wednesday night.

Besides writing lyrics for several hit songs, Girish had also scripted films like “Vadakkunnathan” and “Pallavoor Devanarayanan”.

Over the last 20 years, no other lyricist penned as many hit songs in Malayalam cinema as he did. He was also one of the most honoured lyricists, having won the State award seven times, of which four were in consecutive years – 2001 to 2004.

Malayalam film director Kamal said that he was fortunate to get all the best songs of Girish in his film.

“I am at a loss to say anything. He used to say that he kept a separate pen to write for my films,” said Kamal.

Girish was presently writing the script of a film called “Raman Police”.Singer M.G. Sreekumar, who sang many songs written by Girish, said he has no words to describe the loss to the Malayalam film industry.

“Pinneyum pinneyum aaro…”, a beautiful song he wrote for ‘Krishnagudiyil Oru Pranayakalathu’ (1997), is a good example. Set to tune brilliantly by Vidyasagar, it was the best song by Gireesh.

Among other notable songs of Gireesh are ‘Pranayavarnangal’ (“Aaro viral meettee…”), ‘Meesa Madhavan’ (“Karimizhi kuruviye…”), ‘Chandranudikkunna Dikkil’ (“Oru kunju poovinte…”), ‘Summer in Bethlehem’ (“Oru rathri koodi…”) and ‘Randam Bhavam’ (“Marannittumenthino…”).“Harimuraleeravam…” (‘Aaram Thampuran’), “Karmukil varnante…” (‘Nandanam’) and “Kalabham tharam…” (‘Vadakkumnathan’).“Soorya kireedom…” (‘Devasuram’), “Enthu paranjalum…” (‘Achuvinte Amma’), “Kannu nattu…” (‘Kathavasheshan’) and “Amma mazhakarinu…” (‘Madambi’).

We, at Kerala9.com, pray that his soul rests in peace.

Malayalam Movie Bodyguard – Review

Body Guard Malayalam Movie Review
Body Guard Malayalam Movie Review

Review- Bodyguard

Producer- Johny Sagariga

Director- Siddique

Cast- Dileep, Nayantara, Thyagarajan, Mithra Kurien, Harisree Ashokan etc.

Music- Ouseppachan

Lyrics- Kaithapram, Anil Panachooran

Story, Screenplay, dialogues- Siddique

‘Bodyguard’, since it’s directed by hit maker Siddique, has been a much awaited film. And it has been delayed too, as it was slated to release earlier. Anyway, as the wait ends and the film hits the theatres, the question that pops up is “Has the wait been justified?”A rather confusing question indeed. I don’t know whether to answer in the affirmative or not.

‘Bodyguard’ is unlike the other Siddique films and totally unlike the Siddique-Lal films. Those who expect something on those lines may very well be disappointed. For those who go to see the movie without much expectations, the film may seem OK for an entertainer, with Dileep, Nayantara and Thyagarajan making their presence felt and a mix of variety fare.

‘Bodyguard’ is all about Jayakrishnan (Dileep), a guy who adores people who hold others in dread and rule by dint of their muscle power. If at a stage he was all adoration for the cops, later he started adoring the goons who outsmarted the cops. It was thus that he ventured to become a bodyguard to goons and underworld kingpins. It was then that he heard of a guy named Ashokan, who was held in dread in those circuits too. His aim was now to become Ashokan’s bodyguard. Finally, when Ashokan (Thyagarajan) comes from Dubai, where he is now based, Jayakrishnan goes and meets him. He does finally succeed in becoming Ashokan’s bodyguard. Anyhow when Ashokan and his family later get targetted by rivals, Ashokan asks Jayakrishnan to accompany his daughter Ammu (Nayantara) to the town, where she studies in a college. Ashokan arranges for Jayakrishnan to be admitted to the same college, he being someone who had left his studies mid-way. Then on the story takes a new turn.

The storyline in fact is rather weak and there is in fact nothing new about it, except the bodyguard angle. Of course it would have been better if the post-interval portion had progressed on a different track, but as of now, there is nothing much impressive about the latter half of the movie, which however is watchable. The film ends in a rather good manner too. A major problem with ‘Bodyguard’ is that the film doesn’t have enough of humour and the humour that’s there is not up to the mark either; and when it’s a Siddique film, it’s humour that the audience wants. Anyway, in total, it’s OK for a watch.

Performances

Dileep is good, or to be precise, passable, as Jayakrishnan, Nayantara is good, though not excellent, as Ammu and Thyagarajan appeals as Ashokan. Harisree Ashokan is his very usual self. Mithra Kurien, who plays Ammu’s friend Sethu, is good. (This is in fact her debut film, but her second film ‘Gulumaal’ had got released earlier). The others are all OK with their respective roles.

Technical aspects

Technical aspects are all in tune with the mood and the tempo of the film and handled well.

Music

The songs are in tune with the situations, but there is nothing much to speak about the songs, which may fade out from our memories very soon.

Script

Siddique, who has handled the script too, could have handled the humour element in a better way and could have made the film crisper too. People expect from him, if not the humour that was seen in Siddique-Lal movies, at least the kind of humour that was seen and enjoyed in films like ‘Hitler’ and ‘Chronic Bachelor’.

Direction

Siddique, as director, is in full control of things and does justice to the subject that he wants to present. It’s the story that he had chosen to narrate that takes away from the totality of the film.

Overall verdict- Passable fare; OK for one-time viewing.

Drona 2010 Photos

‘Drona 2010’ (God only knows why the makers have titled the film in that way. Of course they would have been forced to change the title, after a dubbed film from Telugu with the title ‘Drona’ was released, but still the title ‘Drona 2010’ seems strange for a movie of this kind), directed by Shaji Kailas fails to appeal, to any section of the film-viewing public in Kerala. It’s so unlike any of Shaji Kailas’ film, but of course not his worst till date (Remember ‘Sunday 7 pm’?!). It could have been a better film, if the story line and the script had been handled in a different manner. But then, it would have been a different movie. As such, ‘Drona 2010’ is a terrible let-down.
‘Drona 2010’ begins as the story of Kunjunni (Mammootty), a real-estate guy who is bent on buying a ‘Mana’ (ancient type Namboothiri household) named Nettoor Mana. But there are people like the old Chithraguptan (Thilakan) and his sons Gireeshan (Manoj.K.Jayan) and Jayan (Jayan), who want to see Kunjunni’s end. They succeed in accomplishing it, and Kunjunni dies a rather mysterious kind of death. And then enters Madhavan (Mammootty in a double role), Kunjunni’s elder brother, who is well versed in matters of occult nature and knows how to beat Chithraguptan and his sons in everything, including black magic. Madhavan begins his quest in order to unravel the mysteries surrounding the death of his brother and this is what leads to the climax of the film. Added to these developments is the presence of two female characters- Thulasimani (Kaniha), who is Kunjunni’s lover and Mithra (Navya Nair), who is Madhavan’s wife.
It’s the story that plays the villain as far as ‘Drona 2010’ is concerned. The other aspects are all fine, but the film wouldn’t appeal either to Shaji Kailas fans nor to Mammootty fans.
Performances
Mammootty is good as Kunjunni while he impresses with a mesmerising presence as Madhavan. Thilakan and Manoj.K.Jayan have done a great job. Kaniha and Navya don’t have much to do, but they suit their roles. The others are all good.
Technical aspects
Ekhambaran has done a brilliant work of the cinematography while Don Maax scores with the editing. The film doesn’t have any of those technical gimmicks that are usually seen in Shaji Kailas films, but it’s technically sound.
Music
Background score by Rajamani suits the mood and the tempo (if there is any to speak about), but the song could have been avoided. The film in fact needed no song at all.
Script
It’s the script, by Sajan.A.K, that has worked against the film. It’s all unconvincing and totally gone out of track. The scenes are all well conceived, but there is lack of coherence as far as the totality of the film is concerned. It could have been an impressive movie, had things been handled in a different manner by the script-writer. But for Sajan.A.K, who has scripted many a hit movie, this is not the first instance of a good subject getting derailed on the script side. Remember ‘Lanka’, the film he scripted and directed too?!
Direction
Shaji Kailas is in full control of the proceedings, but the subject as a whole and the script seems to have played spoilsport and made it all a wasted effort. No idea why he chose to make such a film…
Overall verdict- Good performances, technically brilliant, but insufferable!

Review by : Unni / www.Kerala9.com

Saji Surendran, the guy who had made some really good tele-films and some successful tele-serials, had made his debut in films with ‘Ivar Vivahitharaayaal’, a family entertainer that was liked much by the audience. And now, with his second film, ‘Happy Husbands’, he once again targets the family audience and to a great extent has succeeded in coming out with a film which would have a good run at the box office. Of course ‘Happy Husbands’ may not appeal to critics and those who are looking for serious stuff.

Mukundan Menon (Jayaram) runs a newspaper, Kerala Today and is very much a successful man, happily settled in life. He lives happy and contented, with a beautiful wife, Krishnendu (Bhavana). But Krishnendu always suspects her husband and even spies on him. Mukundan prefers to be truthful to his wife and at the same time he thinks he has a commitment towards the society and its morality. John (Jayasurya), who works as a photographer with Kerala Today, sees Mukundan as an elder brother. In fact it was Mukundan who had mentored John to a great extent. Mukundan has the habit of reminding John of this obligation too, whenever needed. Rahul (Indrajith), who is a friend to Mukundan and John, is a businessman and happily married to Shreya (Samvritha Sunil). Rahul anyway is a guy who likes being intimate with women and also knows how to hide it from his wife, in a very clever manner. In the meantime, Zarina (Vandana), who is the daughter of a retired DGP and a student of psychology, gets intimate with John and they both fall in love. They decide to get married too, of course with the blessings of Zarina’s parents and also Mukundan and Krishnendu, who are the only people John has got to call his own. It’s in the meantime that a bar dancer named Diana (Rima Kallingal) makes her entry into their lives and complicates things for Mukundan, Rahul and John and their lives. It all takes a rather funny turn from this point.

A family flick that’s intended for entertainment, that’s what ‘Happy Husbands’ is. There is nothing new or different, but it could very well go for time-pass. There is nothing outstanding or great about the movie. Well, I didn’t expect anything of that kind and went in for time pass stuff and hence it seemed OK for me.

Performances

Jayaram and Jayasurya suit their roles well, but it’s Indrajith who scores the most as Rahul. Of the heroines, Bhavana, Samvritha and Vandana suit their roles. Rima scores as Diana. Suraaj Venjaramoodu is his very usual self and scores with his brand of humour. Manianpillai Raju also gets to give a good performance. Salim Kumar, though he appears only in the post interval section, is his very usual self.

Technical aspects

Nothing much to speak about the technical aspects. Of course it could all have been better, but as such, it does suit the mood and the tempo of the film.

Music

There is nothing special about the music. The songs don’t impress much. The makers could have put in some catchy and impressive songs, which would have made the film better, to a great extent. (It’s to be remembered that in his debut film, Saji Surendran had put in some good songs and had shot them in an excellent manner).

Script

Krishna Poojapura, who like Saji Surendran, had come from the television after penning scripts for TV shows, tele-films and tele-serials, does a fairly good work of the script. But there are scenes that give us the feel of watching tele-serials and he has to improve on this aspect to an extent.

Direction

Saji Surendran is in full control of things. Moreover, when compared to ‘Ivar Vivahitharaayaal’, he has done better by not letting things lag (it all seemed to drag on and on towards the end of his debut film). It all goes in a fast pace and doesn’t test your patience much. But for those who had seen Saji Surendran’s earlier tele-films, his films may not at all be impressive.
Overall verdict- Nothing great! Time pass stuff!
