Review by:Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

‘Celluloid’ is one film that we must see; it’s easy counting flaws, but the way Kamal has recreated history by narrating on screen the life-story of J C Daniel, the Father of Malayalam Cinema requires appreciation in the first place. I never felt, not even for a single moment, that the film is not up to the mark. It’s well-made in the first place and Kamal has made it in such a way that it’s no mere bio-pic, but a film that could be seen and liked by all sections of viewers. As much as I know about the life of J C Daniel, ‘Celluloid’ has done justice to his story as much as is possible within the parameters of popular cinema. Fitting homage indeed to a man who sort of ruined his life making the one film that became history…

‘Celluloid’ begins with young J C Daniel (Prithviraj) visiting Dadasaheb Phalke in Mumbai, in 1928. The young man from Travancore, who wants to make a film picks up the basics first and then decides that he’d better make a social drama rather than go for mythological adaptations, which was the trend then in Mumbai and Tamil Nadu. The story was readied and Daniel sold landed properties and his wife’s ornaments to make the film. ‘Celluloid’ etches the whole story in detail, highlighting the hassles that Daniel, his wife Janet (Mamta Mohandas), his friend Sundarraj (Sreejith Ravi) and others had to face and surmount during the making of ‘Vigatha Kumaran’, the first movie made in Kerala and also depicts the story of Rosy (played by Chandni), the film’s heroine, who had to pay it dear for having acted in the face of the social stigma that was attached with women taking up the acting profession. What all happened to J C Daniel and his film is traced in detail and the film travels through time, from 1928 through 1930 and the late 1960s to the present day.

Just because Kamal made the film not as an arty, complex one, but as one that fits well into the format of popular cinema, we have no right to dismiss it as just another superficial attempt. ‘Celluloid’ is a well-researched and well-made film, with performances that are very much up the mark. The film communicated well with the audience and also comments a bit on social issues like casteism and the issues related to stardom in cinema.

Appreciable attempt indeed!! Flaws, if any, are pardonable…

Performance

Prithviraj has done a perfect job as J C Daniel while Mamta and Sreejith Ravi too have put in commendable work. Chandni is the perfect choice for Rosy while Sreenivasan is his usual self as Chelangattu Gopalakrishnan, a journalist. The rest of the cast have rendered full support as well.

Technical aspects

Venu’s cinematography and art-direction by Suresh Kollam contribute a lot towards recreating the past in the best of manners. Editing by Rajagopal is also good. Anyhow, it’s the cinematography and the art-work that require  special mention…we’re indeed taken back into the Travancore of the late 1920s and late 1960s, thanks to the able support rendered by all technicians involved.

Music

M Jayachandran has come out with music that gives us an old-time feel. There may be some who’d vouch against songs in a bio-pic like this; but there is no point denying the fact that the songs do add to the appeal of the film as a popular and commercial venture. We also have to point out that the songs don’t hamper the flow in any way.

Script

Kamal has done a good work of the script. Kudos!

Direction

Kamal is in full control of the subject at hand- the life of one man who changed history but went unacknowledged while he lived. He has also managed to bring out the best in people (artists and technicians) working with him on the project. Good work indeed!!

Verdict- Fitting tribute to the Father of Malayalam Cinema; go watch it!!

22Breaking News Live Malayalam Movie Review

Producer- Ranjith Kumar

Director- Sudheer Ambalappad

Cast- Kavya Madhavan, Mythili, Vineeth, Mamookoya, Sukumari, Devan, Anoop Chandran etc.

Music- Mohan Sithara

Review by:Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

‘Breaking News Live’ is in fact a good film; but if you ask me what kind of impact it’s going to make- at the box office and on the viewers’ minds, I won’t have an answer. But nevertheless it’s a good film, a film which has at its base real good intentions, a film that addresses and discusses social and relevant issues and conveys a very serious and significant message. But the message, the intentions, and the relevance of the issues- all are likely to be lost, owing to a script that misses the mark. The structural incongruity of the movie too hampers the flow and affects the overall impact too.

Nayana (Kavya Madhavan) is a Management Student and the daughter of a retired army officer (Devan). The film begins with Nayana waiting for a train, then getting into the train when it arrives and then travelling in the train. Something that happens during that journey becomes sensational news. From this point we travel back in time and go into events that happened before that journey. Then, it’s back to the aforesaid train journey, during the course of which Sneha (Mythili), a girl from a poor family whose marriage is all set to happen and who had befriended Nayana recently, is attacked by a guy, who jumps off the train with her, intending to rape her. Nayana happens to see this happening. The rest of it forms the plot of the movie, revealing which wouldn’t be fair.

Well, the plot, the treatment isn’t bad. But it could have been better; in fact it should have been better. I liked the way the film discussed the two perspectives, but in between has crept in lots of gaps, which takes away from the totality of the film. There is a serious issue with the flow, with the continuity and that makes us less interested in the whole thing. The songs too are wrongly placed and affect the flow of the film. The humour element too doesn’t work out that well. The way the experts shown in the television shows behave and talk, it seems more like a caricature or farce than a serious movie…

In short, I’d say that ‘Breaking News Live’ is a good opportunity that has gone almost off the track due to wrong handling of the subject and the script.

Performance

Kavya has done a good job of her role. Mythili is also good. Vineeth doesn’t have much to do, but fits into his role. The others are all OK.

Technical aspects

Nothing much to say about the technical aspects of the film.

Music

Background score is good; the songs, tuned by Mohan Sithara, are also good, but we just wonder whether all the songs were needed in the film…

Script

The main issue with the film is the script. Penned jointly by G.Kishore and Sudheer Ambalappad, the script leaves much to be desired. There are loose ends that play foil with the well-intentioned move from the filmmakers’ side.

Direction

Sudheer Ambalappad, who has his own standing as a media guy, was expected to make a big impact with his debut directorial venture. But somehow that doesn’t happen. Not that his direction is weak, but it should have been better, considering the heaviness of the subject discussed. Let’s hope he gets better with his next film. Anyhow, filmmakers like him daring to do such different stuff is appreciable and kudos to the attempt…

Verdict- Good effort; but flawed script and treatment spoils the show…

Cowboy Malayalam Movie Review

123Cowboy Malayalam Movie Review

Producer- K. Anil Mathew

Director- P.Balachandra Kumar

Cast- Asif Ali, Master Pankaj Krrishna, Bala, Sai Kumar, Jagathy, Khushboo, Mydhily, Lena, Kalashala Babu, Indrans, Suresh Pre

Music- Berny Ignatious

Background score- Rajamani

Review by:Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

Well, let me begin with the title. In the context of the movie that you get to see, what does ‘Cowboy’ mean? One of the key characters in the film give a never-before kind of definition for the word ‘cowboy’ and you are left wondering if it really is so. Well, if indeed ‘cowboy’ refers to someone who’s reckless, you’d tend to be one by the time the film ends. Yes, ‘Cowboy’ would drive you mad and reckless…

Vinay (Asif) lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with his parents. His father (Kalasala Babu) is totally against him and his ways. That Vinay runs a pub named ‘Cowboy’ makes his father comment that he makes a living by shamelessly running a brothel. Vinay’s sister Veena (Lena) and brother-in-law Mohan (Irshad), who also live in Kuala Lumpur, have no love for him.

When ‘Cowboy’ begins, Veena and Mohan are set to arrive from India. Their son Pankaj (Master Pankaj Krisshna) is in Singapore and Vinay gets set to take Pankaj to the airport in Mohan’s expensive car, hand over the kid and the car to Veena and Mohan and come back. But on the way, Vinay is forced to chase and fight two guys who try to steal Pankaj’s diamond necklace. Vinay in action is what catches the fancy of an Indian Police Officer Xavier (Bala), who happens to pass by. Xavier then takes Pankaj hostage and threatens to kill him if Vinay doesn’t do what he wants him to do. Xavier wants Vinay to kill someone. He hands Vinay a gun and asks him to go to a hotel, where his target is. Xavier himself would be there, he is told. Vinay finds that his ‘target’ is Revathy Menon (Khushboo), the external affairs minister of India. So, what happens then forms the rest of the plot…

Well, nothing new about the film, but still it could have been watchable if it was written, directed and acted out stylishly. ‘Cowboy’ as it is, is totally flawed. Bad scripting, poor direction, performances that are not up to the mark and a totally flawed execution makes the film insufferable. In fact, as I sit typing out this review, I wonder if at all the film needs a review in the first place. No, maybe!!

Performance

The only person who impresses a bit at least is Khushboo. The rest of them, including Asif, turn out to be unimpressive and it’s the writer and the director who are to take the blame. They could have made a slick action flick with the same cast, had it been shot differently.

Technical aspects

Nothing much to say about the technical aspects of the film. It’s all below average.

Music

Background score is so loud and totally out of place that you sometimes have to strain to hear the dialogues. Rather than enhancing the tempo, the music kills the whole thing. Same about the song department too.

Script

A totally hopeless script- that’s all I feel like saying. Had it been a good script (with of course good direction), the film would have been worth a watch.

Direction

Poor show, Balachandra Kumar. It’s totally unimpressive…

Verdict- Total waste of time and money…
