Producer- Priya Pillay

Director- Manu Sudhakaran

Cast- Nishan, Mridula Murali, Sreetha Sivadas, Lal, Kailash, Krishna, Manuraj, Anoop Chandran etc.
Music- Gopi Sundar

 Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

‘10.30 AM Local Call’, to be honest, seemed surprisingly good to me. No high-profile stars in the cast, a director whose last film was not up to the mark and a precedence of many such films going the wrong way…one wouldn’t expect much out of a film like ‘10.30 AM Local Call’. But surprisingly, yes quite surprisingly, I am happy with the film, which seemed to me a rather tolerable and watchable flick…

‘10.30 AM Local Call’ tells the story of Alby (Nishan), who is an executive in an automobile company. A successful professional, he is happily married to Anne (Mridula Murali) and has as his friends Sub Inspector Roy Thomas (Krishna), political leader Jaishankar (Anoop Chandran) and businessman Vasudevan Namboothiri alias Vasu (Manuraj). The four of them have been pals since their college days.

One day Alby happens to see Nimmy (Sreetha Sivadas), who has been his lover in college and who had later married someone else. They meet a couple of times and Alby understands that Nimmy is now happily married to Vishnu (Kailash). But then one day Kailash dumps Nimmy and she calls up Alby to come and meet her at a bus stop. Nimmy explains things and Kailash asks her to stay at a home-stay when she finds her friend’s house locked up. But then, he can’t risk allowing her to stay alone and hence goes with her. They spend the night together and the next morning Alby wakes up to find Nimmy lying dead in a pool of blood in the bathroom. He flees the scene and remains silent on this. Very soon he gets a call on his phone, from an unidentified number. The caller (Lal) sends him a video, of Alby and Nimmy getting intimate and embracing each other and then Alby fleeing on seeing Nimmy lying dead. The caller threatens Alby with dire consequences if he doesn’t do what he says. He gives Alby instructions and tells his that now on, it would be a game for them…From here develops the plot…

I won’t say ‘10.30 AM Local Call’ is a must watch or that it’s great cinema. But it’s not bad; there are flaws, but those can be overlooked if you are interested in watching a decent thriller kind of flick. There is a flow, the story is narrated tolerably well and the performances are also OK. But if the script had been better and the performances much better, the film would have turned out to be a bigger success. As of now, ‘10.30 AM Local Call’ is watchable…that’s all I’d say…

Performance

Nishan does justice to his role. He seems to falter in some places, but over-all he is OK with his role. Mridula Murali is good, as Anne. Sreetha is not bad. Kailash looks different and good. Lal is also good. The rest of the cast are all OK.

Technical aspects

Nothing outstanding to note about the technical aspects. Krish Kymal does the cinematography part decently well.

Music

Music by Gopi Sundar suits the theme of the movie and the songs also good.

Script

Script by Arunnlaal is OK. There are issues with the dialogues at some places, but overall the story is narrated well and that makes the film watchable. The suspense too is kept intact till the end of the film…But still, I have to say that the script is just OK and could have been better…much better.

Direction

Director Manu has gone much better compared to his debut film, ‘Sandwich’. He is in full control. Hope he gets better with his next film and also that he chooses a better script and a better cast, which would ensure an even better and much more enjoyable film… All the best!!

Verdict- OK for a one-time watch!!

Shutter Malayalam Movie Review

shutter malayalam movie reviewShutter Malayalam Movie Review

Producer– Saritha Ann Thomas

Director– Joy Mathew

Cast– Lal, Vinay Forrt, Sreenivasan, Sajitha Madathil, Augustine, Premkumar etc.

Music– Shahabaz Aman & B B Sam

Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

‘Shutter’ is one film which proves that filmmaking is not at all about being prolific or being part of the mainstream. It took Joy Mathew over two and a half decades, after his notable performance in John Abraham’s ‘Amma Ariyaan’, to come out with his debut directorial film. Joy Mathew, who played a key role in the 1986 John Abraham movie and who has been active as a theatre person and activist, gives us a striking and wonderful movie in ‘Shutter’, a film that’s worth many rounds of discussions and critical analysis.

‘Shutter’ begins with Suran (Vinay Forrt) going about in his auto-rickshaw, in the city of Kozhikode and then the film moves on to other characters as well. Very soon we meet film-director Manoharan (Sreenivasan), who is gearing up to make his next film, his second one, which he is making after a long gap of time. Manoharan happens to travel in Suran’s auto-rickshaw and forgets his bag in the auto-rickshaw. We meet Rasheed (Lal), who has been in the Gulf and who now gets ready to get his daughter married off, especially since she has boys among her friends and interact with them over cell-phone. Suran is a close aide and friend of Rasheed and as they wander about at night on Suran’s auto-rickshaw, planning to get some booze, they come across a prostitute (Sajitha Madathil). Rasheed makes Suran talk to her and soon she is on Suran’s auto-rickshaw. They move about in search of a hotel room and finally, on finding no place for their nocturnal adventures, decide to settle down in an unused shop room, owned by Rasheed. Suran puts Rasheed and the lady inside the shop, downs the shutter, locks it and goes away, promising to return at midnight with food. The plot develops from here.

‘Shutter’ is not just a story; it’s much more than that. There of course is an element of suspense, handled in a neat way and there are glimpses from life in Kozhikode city, presented realistically and packaged attractively. But it’s something else that forms the crux of the movie’s plot. The film is basically about human relationships, perspectives and changing perspectives. How a few hours, spent behind closed shutters, can change life for you and bring about a drastic shift in one’s perspectives is shown very sensitively. The very complex of human relationships and the innate goodness of human nature is what the film stresses on. All this and much more makes the film stand out as one of the best Malayalam films in recent times.

Performance

I could generalize by saying that every member of the cast has done full justice to his or her respective role, but it would be gross injustice if I don’t stop to mention in particular Sajitha Madathil and Vinay Forrt. Sajitha Madathil, who has her own standing as a theatre person and activist and who has acted in some films already, puts in a wonderful performance as the prostitute. Vinay Forrt, whose performance in some of his recent films has been notable, does a neat job of his character. Sreenivasan, as usual, is comfortable with his role. Lal also passes muster as Rasheed.

Technical aspects

‘Shutter’ is focused on a story, which has lots of things to narrate. The technical aspects are in tune with the theme and the tempo and there is no point looking for or expecting technical gimmicks in a film like this. Hari Nair’s camerawork, editing by Bijith Bala and art-work by Sunil Kochanur suit the film’s mood.

Music

Music (songs as well as background score) jell well with the totality of the film.

Script

Joy Mathew has done a good and balanced work of the script. The characterization aspect and the way the story evolves has all been handled deftly.

Direction

Good work, Joy Mathew. He knows very well what to deliver and how to package and deliver it and does full justice to his job. Congrats!!

Verdict– Must watch, lots of surprises in store for you…

David And Goliath Malayalam Movie Review

david and goliath reviewDavid And Goliath Malayalam Movie Review

Producer– Sudeep Karat, Arun M C, Sreekumari CS

Director– Rajeevnath

Cast– Jayasurya, Anoop Menon, P Balachandran, Lena, Indrans, Sowmya, Anumol etc.

Music– Ratheesh Vega

Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

I am not totally disappointed with Rajeevnath’s ‘David and Goliath’, and I am not totally impressed either. As I sat there watching the film, I was hooked on to the proceedings. The story, the location and the cinematography, the performances etc kept me engrossed, but once I got out of the theatre, I realized that there is not much worth carrying with me in my mind. What I had seen could to an extent be forgotten, courtesy the lag that makes you feel more exhausted than exhilarated and some vital issues with the script.

David (Jayasurya) is an orphan, brought up with love and care by Father Gerald (P.Balachandran). David had always been told by Father Gerald that it’s Jesus who is his Father. The young chap is afraid of people and when he is afraid, his nose starts bleeding. At school, his nose bleeds when he sits for exams with other students, but he is confident when allowed to write the exams all alone and scores full marks. This trait remains all along with David, who excels in making all kinds of devices and innovative machines. An inventor in his own right, he makes a machine that generates power, but when given the chance to exhibit his invention, goes nervous and fails miserably. He also vows to protect young Sharon (Sowmya) against a guy who teases and threatens to molest her, but backs out at the right moment due to his inherent fear. But later, Father Gerald’s narration of the biblical story of David and Goliath makes him take up arms against the molester. After Father Gerald passes away, David is left all alone and has to move away from the church, which, along with the adjacent property, has been bought by someone else. It’s while travelling away from the church that the power-generating device he invented falls into a river and gets lost.

Enter Sunny Kaithamattam (Anoop Menon), an ambitious guy who is happily married to Deepa (Anumol) and has a little daughter Twinkle and who aspires to do wonders as an entrepreneur. He has already lost much money, but hasn’t lost hope and moves on, fired by this hope. Sunny happens to find the power generating device and that ignites his hopes. Soon he fetches the person behind the invention, the meek and sincere David and requests him to stand by him. But little does David, who readily accepts the request, know that Sunny would turn another Goliath in his life. What all happens next forms the plot of the film.

The plot in interesting; the biblical parallels and references apt and the way the story evolves is also interesting. But there is something cold, something dull and insipid about the film that makes it go wrong at some level. ‘David and Goliath’ doesn’t communicate as it should have done and doesn’t stand out as extra-ordinary. There is some kind of a lag, a rather slow pace that at times makes you let out a yawn or two. I feel the film should have been a bit more fast and loud and then the interesting plot would have made for a good, really good film.

As of now, ‘David and Goliath’, though interesting and different, is a bit slow-moving and doesn’t rise to the levels that it was expected to touch, being a Rajeevnath film scripted by Anoop Menon.

Performance

Jayasurya as David is good; he does a perfect job of his role. The trouble however is that he seems to have played characters of this shade very often and that sort of puts us off, despite his excellent performance. Anoop as Sunny is also good, but he too seems to be repeating himself, as regards the dialogues and dialogue rendition plus the mannerisms and the characterization aspect too. P Balachandran is the one who scores, among the others in the cast. The ladies don’t have much to do…Oops, forgot Lena, she is good indeed, nothing much to say about the other ladies in the cast..

Technical aspects

Jithu Damodar has captured the beautiful locations even more beautifully in his camera frames. Kudos, Jithu! Art-work by Arkkan Kollam is also good. Xian could have made the film a bit slicker with editing of a different kind. Just a thought, as the film is slow moving at times.

Music

Ratheesh Vega does a good work of the music, both the background score and the songs. “Athiru kaakkum mala…” stands out…

Script

Anoop Menon deserves appreciation for having come up with such a different theme. But there is something lacking in his script, some amount of pace and loudness which bestows the film with a cold and dull feel and it’s this that has hampered the flow of the whole film.

Direction

Rajeevnath is in control of things and directs the film in his typical style. But that he couldn’t rise above the script and make-up for its flaws is also notable.

Verdict– Good, interesting plot, good performances…but slow moving and a bit boring.
