Hit-maker Joshiy comes up with a very youthful kind of action flick, which is very much likely to work well with the youth as well as the family audience. And it’s interesting to note that the makers have given the catch-line for the film as ‘Prince of Thieves’, reminding us of the Kevin Costner film too, with which it of course bears no resemblance.
‘Robinnhood’ tells the story of Venkitesh Iyer alias Venky (Prithviraj), who teaches physics in a coaching centre by the day and robs ATM’s by night. His kind of thieving is rather hi-tech; he gets everything pertaining to accounts in a particular bank, the IBI bank, and that includes the 16-digit code on ATM cards and the secret PIN code too. And then he makes fake ATM cards using mobile recharge coupons. The police, led by a young ACP (Jayasurya), are investigating the case, but Nandakumar Menon (Biju Menon), who is the executive-director of the IBI bank, brings in a private investigator, the young Alexander Felix (Narain). Felix does his investigation staying in the bank’s guest house, which is in fact a flat adjacent to that of Venky. Roopa (Bhavana), who is the systems head for the bank in Mumbai, joins Felix as an assistant in his investigation. Soon Venky, Felix and Roopa become close friends. Felix however feels that the person behind the ATM robbery is a Robin Hood kind of guy with some justifications to his doing and also begins to feel that there’s something fishy about Venky.
The film should not in any way be compared to the trendy films that are being made in Hindi or Tamil (let’s forget Hollywood). But as a film that has been made in Malayalam and with a budget that suits a Malayalam movie, ‘Robinnhood’ is an acceptable kind of entertainer that could appeal to at least some section of the youth and the family audience as well. It’s not an utterly bad film.
Performances
Prithviraj is a good choice to play the lead role and does justice to it. Narain is good as Felix and turns very much impressive towards the end of the film. Jayasurya doesn’t have much to do while Bhavana is OK for her role. Samvritha plays a modern girl and is just about OK, with nothing much to do. Biju Menon is good, but has nothing new to do, performance-wise. The rest are all OK.
Technical aspects
Cinematographer Shaji, art-director Joseph Nellikkal and editor Ranjan Abraham, who have of late come to be favourites of director Joshiy, have done their parts perfectly well.
Music
Rajamani’s background score suits the mood and the tempo of the film. Coming to the songs (by the Kaithapram-M.Jayachandran team), the film could very well have done without the songs too. A couple of them seem to have been put in very deliberately, just for the sake of it. Moreover Joshiy seems to be repeating himself these days as regards the songs and song picturisation.
Script
Sachi and Sethu, the scenarists who had scripted the hit film ‘Chocolate’ seem to be in control of things here too. Of course some, especially those who are too critical, may see the situations as rather fake and unrealistic, but what all ‘Robinnhood’ provides you is exactly what you expect out of it.
Direction
Before commenting on the direction side, here’s something, some kind of a disclaimer. Those who have been fans of Joshiy films (like ‘New Delhi’, ‘Nirakoottu’, ‘Kauravar’ etc) should never expect ‘Robinnhood’ to be a film of that genre. Times have changed. Many directors of Joshiy’s age and generation are now out of the fray. It’s really a surprise and something worth appreciation too that Joshiy has managed to change with the times and retain his sway on the box office too. His name flashing on the screen does elicit loud applause even now, though his films have changed much in the last few years. Joshiy has succeeded in making what he perhaps intended to make. Everyone knows that nowadays it’s the youth who form the majority of film viewers in Kerala. Hence the safest bet is to make a film for the youth. Joshiy has succeeded to a great extent in doing this, though there may be some flaws to point out. But the veteran of many hits has done an almost neat job of ‘Robinnhood’.
Overall verdict- Youthful action film, for the family audience too.

Tamil movie Eeram, Produced by director Shankar’s ‘S’ Pictures and starring Nanda, Aadhi (of ‘Mirugam’ fame) and Sindhu Menon in lead roles, has opened to fantastic response from the public in almost all the centres in Tamil Nadu. The film is said to be doing particularly well in the Chennai-Madurai-Coimbatore cities, known as ‘A’ Centre .
Heroine Sindhu Menon, who is obviously on a high, was last seen in Tamil films in director Bharathiraaja’s award-winning film ‘Kadal Pookkal’ opposite Murali many years ago. She didn’t get any offers from Tamil directors/producers and migrated to her native Kerala where she has done around 20 films in various languages as on date. For the past week, Sindhu has been making anxious telephone calls to her friends in Chennai from her State to know about the fate of ‘Eeram’.
When queried why she ‘avoided’ Tamil films for a decade, Sindhu is quick to reply that it wasn’t her fault that she wasn’t getting any tempting offer other than ‘Eeram’ during this period. “I was busy with my Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film commitments. When I was on the look out for an interesting subject for my re-entry in Tamil films, director Arivazhagan came to Hyderabad to narrate the story of ‘Eeram’ to me, which I readily agreed to do.”

The audio of Hariharan- MT Vasudevan Nair epic Pazhassi Raja was launched by Mammotty at the auditorioum of Gokulam Park in Kochi on Sunday (Sep 20) evening., by handing over it to Tamil super star Sarath Kumar at Gokulam convention centre in the presence of artistes. Mammooty and Sarath are appearing in lead roles in the film. The film will be released on Gandhi Jayanthi day, October 2, in five languages, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and English. The music has scored by Ilaiya Raja and lyricists are O.N.V. Kurup, Gireesh Puthencherry and Kaanesh Poonoor. With M.T Vasudevan Nair’s script Hariharan has directed the film. Gokulam Gopalan is the producer. It took two and a half years to complete the film. The cost of production is approximately 27 crores . ‘ Think music’ is distributing the CD. Producer Gokulam Gopalan, his wife Shylaja, executive producer Baiju, C. Praveen, Resul Pookutty, Ravi Varma Raja, Kaniha, Padma Priya, Jagathy, Devan, Suresh Krishna, Lalu Alex, Manjari, M.G. Sree Kumar, camera man Ram Nath Shetty attended the function. Song sequences and trailor had screened in the function. Both Mamootty and Resul Pookkutty said that they are proud of being the part of the film.

Superstar Mammootty took a rare off day on the occasion of Eid. He offered prayers at an Eidgah in Kochi and spent time with his family. Speaking about the same, he said that this was a welcome break and a day that he enjoys. This is one of the few days, which the superstar with one of the busiest schedules, does not work.

To begin with, let’s try and think out if there is any purpose behind making a movie like ‘Duplicate’. Of course Suraaj Venjaramoodu, who is playing the hero for the first time, has a fan-following of his own, as a comedian. But does that mean that he can carry a film solely on his shoulders? And especially since he is not doing in the film what he is best at doing, i.e., comedy, will his fans really be satisfied with his first film as hero? So, ultimately who gains out of the movie? Not Suraaj anyway, except perhaps on financial terms. Not the director or producer either. And the film-viewing public? They too gain nothing. And nothing for Malayalam Cinema either. So, why such a film?
‘Duplicate’ begins as the story of Sivankutty (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), a young guy living in a village and trying his best to perpetually ward off people to whom he owe money. He has to make some money and clear off his debts and then take marry his uncle’s daughter Meenakshi (Roopashri), while his uncle ‘Pattalam’ Keshavan (Laloo Aalex) is up in arms against their love. Sivankutty’s constant companion is his paternal uncle P.Suresh (Innocent), whose sole aim in life is to get drunk all the time. It’s into this situation that barges in Jeevan (Suraaj in a double role), a look-alike of Sivankutty, who accidentally happens to take Sivankutty’s place while Sivankutty happens to reach Jeevan’s house. Jeevan in fact is a rich guy, but one with his share of problems. How the two guys’ lives get entangled and what all happens then forms the plot of ‘Duplicate’.
‘Duplicate’ is all duplicate; there’s nothing original about the subject. We have seen it so many times before. And there is nothing spectacular that happens during the development of the plot either. Subject-wise, treatment wise and on the performance side and technical side, the film is replete with flaws of all kinds. There is nothing that would make you call the film a good one. It’s as futile watching the movie as futile perhaps is making it, with so much of money being spent (‘Duplicate’ is no big budget movie, but even a low budget one incurs a budget of lakhs and lakhs of rupees).
Performances
It can’t be said that Suraaj Venjaramoodu gives a poor performance in the double role, that of Sivankutty and that of Jeevan. But of course the characters are a bit heavy for him and this is not what’s expected of him too. Suraaj has his limitations as an actor and characters for him should be created with that in mind. Innocent has nothing much to do as P.Suresh and his character loses significance mid-way. The others are all just so so, with Salim Kumar, Bijukuttan, Laloo Aalex etc delivering their trademark performances. The heroine doesn’t even deserve mention.
Technical aspects
Nothing much to mention about the technical aspects of ‘Duplicate’.
Music
Songs penned by Santhosh Varma, Anil Panachooran and Suresh Kaavil and set to tune by Alex Paul are all far from impressive.
Script
Shani Khader, who has written the script, hasn’t done anything worth mentioning. It’s just an average kind of thing, with not much importance given to characterization or the development of scenes.
Direction
It’s rather difficult to say if Shibu Prabakhar, the director of the movie will have a future in cinema or not. In fact, it’s difficult to assess his capabilities based on this film, which has nothing much to work on and doesn’t have a great cast either. But it’s the director who has to take care of these aspects too, namely fixing the subject and of course the casting too. But in present day Malayalam Cinema, a debutant director hasn’t much of a say in such matters. So if a second film happens for this director (let’s hope so), then only will we be able to judge him.
Overall verdict- Wasted effort.

In keeping with his first two films (‘Pakal’ and ‘Nagaram’), Nishad.M.A (whose third film was ‘Ayudham’) delivers yet another movie with a message to convey. ‘Vairam’, Nishad’s fourth film, narrates a good story in a convincing manner.
‘Vairam’ focuses on the woes of the parents of a young girl, Vairamani (Dhanya Mary), who’s brutally raped and then thrown into a well and killed. Sivarajan (Pasupathy), Vairamani’s father, has been a bank manager and Devi (Meera Vasudev), her mother a housewife. Their world revolved around Vairamani and they loved her much, like any other parents. And hence they are shattered when she is raped and killed. When Sivarajan comes to know that it was Thalikkulam Josekutty (Jayasurya) who did this, he sets out and finds Josekutty and kills him. And when the trial begins, he doesn’t defend himself and consequently is awarded life imprisonment. When Sivarajan is taken out of court, he is attacked by a group of goons and lynched, almost to death. It is from here that ‘Vairam’ begins. And then, a young journalist Annie Jacob (Samvritha Sunil) sets out to bring out Sivarajan’s story and let the world know what had befallen Sivarajan and his family. Advocate Ravi Varma (Suresh Gopi), who was the crown counsel for Sivarajan, does all that he could too. Then comes in Crime Branch S.P Thomas Eeraly (Mukesh), who investigates it all afresh. It all moves to a well executed climax.
Performances
Pasupathy delivers an excellent performance as Sivarajan and wins our appreciation and touches our hearts. Suresh Gopi is his very usual self. Mukesh does a convincing job. Jayasurya impresses us as Josekutty. Dhanya Mary (of ‘Thalappavu’ fame) is good as Vairamani. Meera Vasudev is good. Thilakan and KPAC Lalitha are first rate. All the others in the cast have done justice to their respective roles.
Technical aspects
Cinematography (by Sanjeev Shankar), art work (by Gireesh Menon) and editing (by Samjith) are very much in sync with the mood and the theme of the film.
Music
Gireesh Puthencherry and M.Jayachandran have teamed up once again to give us some good songs, the best of them being “Vennilavu…”, rendered soulfully by Yesudas. Rajamani has done an excellent job of the background score.
Script
Cherian Kalpakavvadi, who has scripted many notable movies, mainly for directors Venu Nagavalli and Mohan, delivers a well balanced script, which forms the real strength of ‘Vairam’.
Direction
Nishad .M.A seems to be bettering himself as a director with every movie. It’s good to see that he is totally in control of things and has done a neat job in ‘Vairam’. Congrats, Nishad for delivering a well-intentioned movie.
Overall verdict- Good performances, message well conveyed.
