Every other so called ‘guys’ are complaining, begging, bragging and mourning
for newcomers to arrive in this industry. Some even are quetching that the
biggies are pushing newbies away as they fear competition, which is like saying;
Yesudas is not compent enough as participants of Idea Star Singer. If freshers
are not coming let’s not criticize the whole industry and realize that many
newcomers are coming and are thrown out because of their incompetence. I
overheard one viewer asking, ‘If the new comers are like this, without any depth
they should not come.’ If a new person comes he should bring some innovation,
or else what difference he has with the earlier generation of filmmakers. Or are
these ‘guys’ mourning for newcomers for the sake of it?
MAC is all about friendship and songs. This film will find more takers among
ladies. This is the place where films like Niram have run for 100 days. People
who enjoyed Niram can wholeheartedly relish this one too.

Writing – The tires are rolling but they are in air

The script is loose that several incidents occur one after the other but keeps
the story static like the needle in the clock which always move, but doesn’t
go anywhere. Reasons said for certain happenings in story are shockingly
unconvincing.
The group is like the regular one we see in all films, the leader Prakashan is
the ‘young angry man’; the other one named Kuttu is readymade to bring comedy
into the team and thereby make the audience laugh. One person sings well and
another has a love affair. Young characters are talking with maturity of age 50.
The fatherly Kumaran who helps the friends, give inspiration every half hour and
the dreaded financier who doesn’t even want his capital as he was drawn by
the songs and friendship of the group, can’t even be seen in moral stories for
children. The film enlightens viewers that love and humanity can only be seen in
huts, that too in villages. This finding is narrow-minded or at best amateurish.
The dialogues are frail, and characters are not earthy. It’s like when you try
to write about the problems of children in Sudan watching a documentary.
The climax is more than predictable. The film hasn’t followed any pattern or it
hasn’t brought any. References to superstars have brought some claps.
People are expecting much more from Sreenivasan Jr. who is considered the
Midas in industry. Even an average film won’t satisfy the expectation from
him. The hype of his hit songs, music videos and the stardom he already
enjoys as the son of the genius would be a baggage if he continues like this.
Though he is an able music video director, Vineeth has to recognize feature film
as an entirely new game. The film is shot well; especially the last song. The flick brings reminiscence of Boys and Makante Achan. Movie appears to be entirely a
product of Vineeth Sreenivasan. The senior won’t do this to us. But still, among
the new generation directors who have recently debuted, Vineeth has his own
place. The casting is alright and the director has shown his skill in making them
emote. The comedy scenes are handled deftly. Vineeth’s Midas touch may work
even though some people can’t agree.
Malar ‘vaadi’.

Review by – Unni / www.Kerala9.com

If you ask me what’s new about ‘Malarvadi Arts Club’, I’d have to say that there is
nothing much new about it. We have seen it all before, it seems. All films about a bunch
of friends seem to be moving on the same lines. And, when it’s about a bunch of friends
who have a passion for music, we know how it will go and how it will end. Well, we
have seen it all before. ‘Malarvadi Arts Club’ too goes on the same lines, but the film is
refreshing indeed. Vineeth Sreenivasan has done a real good work of his debut work as
director.

‘Malarvadi Arts Club’ takes us to a village in Northern Kerala, where live a bunch of
friends- Prakashan, Purushu, Santhosh, Kuttu and Praveen. They have been friends even
since they were school-kids. Now, they are grown up and have finished their education.
They do nothing, no job, nothing. They come together in a tea-shop run by an aged guy,
Kumaran (Nedumudi Venu) and also in their own Malarvadi Arts Club. So, what does
the Malarvadi Arts Club guys do? They take up sundry assignments like putting up stages
and all, assisting the local politician Sudhakran (Manikantan) in making hartals a success
etc. They also make the most of their life- making fun and frolic, roaming around etc.
They all share a passion for music, with Santhosh being a good singer and the others
good at playing different instruments. At a stage when Santhosh’s father, who is an
advocate, loses a court-battle and his family is likely to face severe financial problems
that the Malarvadi guys think of an idea. They plan to make Santhosh take part in a
television reality show. They join hands, pool the money needed for it and take Santhosh
to Thiruvananthapuram. Santhosh emerges the winner and goes on to become a popular
singer. From here, the story takes off.

So, what all is to follow? You can very well guess it all out. The story definitely moves
along predictable lines and the climax too in only too predictable. But isn’t that what
you want to happen? As for me, the story progresses the way I want it to progress and
ends the way I want it to end and that leaves me happy, satisfied. The mood, the tempo
that’s needed and expected is maintained all through. The characters, though clichéd,
have been done well. The scenes are well executed and the songs shot brilliantly. Of
course it’s the same that I have seen in Farhan Akhthar’s ‘Rock On’ and many other
movies. But I don’t care, as it leaves me happy. But one question that leaves me baffled
is, “Do I carry anything with me once I leave the theatres?”. Maybe no; or maybe yes, the
friendship element that’s well worked out seems to have worked out in that respect. But it
does impress, especially as a debut directorial venture of so young a guy. In total I’d say
that ‘Malarvadi Arts Club’ is a good movie, one that you can see and enjoy and take your
family to see.

Performances

The lead actors, all debutantes, have done justice to their respective roles. The popular
artists in the cast- Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Suraaj Venjaramoodu,
Janardhanan, Salim Kumar et al are their usual selves. Among them, Nedumudi Venu
passes muster, of course.
Technical aspects
P.Sukumar’s cinematography is one of the highlights of ‘Malarvadi Arts Club’. He has
succeeded in giving, through his brilliant and colourful frames, a real youthful flavour to
the film. Ranjan Abraham as the editor and Ajay Mangadu as the art-director too have
rendered able support.
Music

Shaan Rahman has done a brilliant work of the background score and the songs. Vineeth
Sreenivasan has given us some fairly good lyrics too.
Script
Vineeth Sreenivasan, who makes his debut as a scenarist too, has done full justice to
the script. He has blended all the necessary ingredients with the finesse of a seasoned
scenarist. There is no denying the fact that he has had to bring in some popular faces,
like Salim Kumar and Suraaj Venjaramoodu, to draw people to the theatres, but that’s
pardonable since even seasoned directors are forced to do it. (The producer has to get
back his money!). The script is so unlike those written by Vineeth’s father, the popular
actor-scenarist-director Sreenivasan, that it has a definite Vineeth Sreenivasan stamp
upon it.

Direction

Vineeth Sreenivasan is in full control of things as the director, the captain of the ship.
As the director he seems to know what he wants to deliver and delivers that in style.
The youthfulness, which we have seen earlier in the songs that he has sung and also
in his performance as an actor, is evident in his direction too. As a debutant Vineeth
has done a great job. Of course there may be flaws, if we get to compare his work with
that of seasoned directors, but there is no denying the fact that Vineeth will go places.
Overall verdict- Good, youthful and musical…

Apoorva Ragam Review

Review– Apoorvaragam
Producer– Siyad Koker
Director– Sibi Malayil
Cast– Nishan, Asif Ali, Nithya Menon, Vinay etc.
Music– Vidyasagar
Background Music– Biji Bal
Lyrics– Santhosh Verma
Story, Screenplay, dialogues– G.S.Anand, Najeem Koya

Review By : Unni /Kerala9.com

A director who has delivered many memorable films in the past, Sibi Malayil hasn’t
been giving us any real good movies for quite some time. Now, with ‘Apoorvaragam’ he
seems all set to hit back, delivering a film that proves that Sibi Malayil is only too happy
to change with the times.
‘Apoorvaragam’ begins very much like a usual campus flick. Roopesh (Nishan) and
Tomy (Asif Ali) are first year students and Roopesh in college. Roopesh develops a
liking for Nancy (Nithya Menon), who is the daughter of a rich guy. He is in love with
her and wants her to reciprocate his love. Tomy too desires this to happen and with the
help of a couple of other friends, Roopesh succeeds in winning over Nancy’s love. But
then, Tomy starts behaving rather strangely. He calls us Nancy’s father and, calling
himself a ‘well-wisher’ tells him that Nancy is in love with a ‘good-for-nothing’ guy.
Later, things take such a turn that Roopesh and Nancy decide to go in for a register
marriage, without informing Nancy’s parents. They do so and Nancy returns home,
as if nothing has happened. The ‘well-wisher’ does his job, that of informing Nancy’s
father of this too. And from here, the story takes a new turn, a totally unexpected turn.
Well, if we go in for a real critical analysis, it wouldn’t be fair to call the movie a good
one. It isn’t good on the whole. But it isn’t too bad either. It’s in fact a package of mixes.
Things don’t seem to go well in the first half, especially in the opening sequences. The
performances, the execution of the scenes, the script everything seems unimpressive.
Then, after a while, it gets better. Post interval, things seem to have picked up and it
seems you are watching an altogether different movie, treatment-wise. On the whole
there are plusses as well as minuses and ‘Apoorvaragam’ is not a total let down.

Performances

Nishan is rather unimpressive as Roopesh while Asif Ali is good as Tomy. Nithya Menon
does full justice to her role, that of Nancy. Jagathy Sreekumar has a rather insignificant
role to play in the film and appears in just about a couple of scenes, which could even
have been avoided. Vinay, who had done an insignificant role, impresses as Narayanan,
friend to Roopesh and Tomy.

Technical aspects
Cinematography by Ajayan Vincent is good. Art-direction by Prashant Madhav suits the
mood of the film.

Music

Biji Bal’s background score is in sync with the plot, but the songs, set to tune by
Vidyasagar, are far from impressive.

Script
It’s script that plays the villain here. It seems that the scenarists G.S.Anand and Najeem
Koya, desperately wanted the second half of the film to stand out. They seem to have
concentrated much on making the second half impressive while the first half, especially
the first few scenes, seems to have been neglected. They should have done a much better
work of the script on the whole.

Direction
What had gone wrong about the script seems to have gone wrong about the direction too.
Sibi Malayil, a veteran of many memorable movies, seems to have paid less attention to
the initial portion of the film. He definitely could have done better. But of late, with not-
so-good scripts coming up, Sibi Malayil hasn’t been able to do much with the direction
part. We indeed miss the kind of films that he had churned out with Lohithadas as the
scenarist.

Overall verdict- Not bad, but could have been better! Poor scripting!!
