Malayalam Movie Makeup Man Review

1

Movie Name – Make-up Man
Producer– M.Renjith
Director– Shafi
Cast– Jayaram, Sheela, Siddique, Kunchacko Boban, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Prithviraj, Jagathy Sreekumar etc.
Music– Vidyasagar
Lyrics– Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Cinematography– Alagappan
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues– Sachi- Sethu

Review by – Unni / www.Kerala9.com

Director Shafi and scenarists Sachi and Sethu coming together…that leads us to expect a colourful entertainer. ‘Make-up Man’, which has Shafi and the Sachi-Sethu duo teaming up and with Jayaram in the title role, is a good entertainer. But the film, which is not as pacy and colourful as usual Shafi flicks, may not go that great, though it could do well with the family audience.

Balachandran alias Balu (Jayaram) is broke and in debt after his event-management company failed to take off. He doesn’t know what to do next. His troubles double and Soorya (Sheela), his lover, leaves her home on the eve of her marriage with someone of her parents’ choice. She books two tickets for him and her to Delhi and waits at the railway station. Balu is late and both he and Soorya are forced to return together, confused and not knowing what to do next. Balu calls his friend Kichu (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), who is a production controller in films. With Kichu’s help they get married. Kichu even arranges for them accommodation for a night, in a hotel room booked for the heroine of the film he is working on. The director Sidharth (Siddique) and producer Paul (Janardhanan) are on the look-out for a heroine as they have sent away their former heroine. It’s quite accidentally that the producer comes across Soorya and mistakes her for the new girl Kichu had brought for the movie. He calls up Sidharth to interview the girl and thus Soorya is forced to go in for an audition, as she and Balu don’t want Kichu to be in trouble because of them. Quite surprisingly Sidharth is impressed with Soorya and she is signed for the film. She is rechristened Anamika. Upon Kichu’s advice, the fact that Soorya is married is kept a secret and Balu, who has to stick on with her, takes up as her make-up man. From here the story takes off.

‘Make-up Man’ is a lively entertainer, with drama, romance, humour et al brought together in an appealing manner. Of course you may be left wondering if this is what you expected out of the Shafi entertainer. ‘Make up Man’ is loud enough, but you’d have expected it to be louder; the film is pacy, but you’d have expected it to be more so; it’s colourful, but not as colourful as you wanted it to be. But still it’s definitely watchable, a film that you could go watch along with your family on an evening when you are at leisure.
Performances
Jayaram is his usual self and fits into his role perfectly well. Sheela is good. Siddique puts in a good performance while the others fit into their respective roles. Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj, playing themselves, do good to the film.
Technical aspects
The cinematography, editing and art-work suit the theme and add to the colourfulness of the film. Alagappan’s cinematography is one of the highlights of the movie.
Music
Unlike usual Shafi films most of which have at least 5 to 6 peppy songs, ‘Make-up Man’ has only three songs and they are good, but most likely won’t go as great as songs from other Shafi films. The background score works well with the theme.
Script
Sachi and Sethu, true to their style, have mixed all needed ingredients and have come out clean. But the film could have been a bit more colourful and pacy and would have gone great, as an entertainer.
Direction
Shafi has done justice to his work, being in control of things. But he could have added a song or two, which would have elicited a better response at the box office for the film. He could also have made the film a bit more loud and pacy. The film, as of now, is definitely worth a watch, as a decent entertainer.

Overall verdict- Decent entertainer, for the family audience. Could have been better!

Malayalam Movie Race Review

Movie Name – Race
Producer– Jose.K.George, Shaji Mecheri
Director– Kukku Surendran
Cast– Kunchacko Boban, Indrajith, Mamta Mohandas, Gowri Munjal, Jagathy Sreekumar etc.
Music- Viswajith
Background score- Gopi Sundar
Lyrics- Vayalar Sharath Chandra Varma, Rajeev Nair
Cinematography- Pramod Varma
Story- Kukku Surendran
Screenplay- Kukku Surendran, Robin Thirumala
Dialogues- Robin Thirumala

Review by – Unni / www.Kerala9.com

Two scenes into the movie and I was almost sure that ‘Race’ was a remake of the Irfan Khan- Rajit Kapoor- Konkona Sen starrer Hindi film ‘Deadline 24 Ghante’ (which was obviously inspired by the English movie ‘Trapped’). The Kunchacko Boban- Indrajith- Mamta Mohandas starrer ‘Race’, which is almost a straight lift, has elements that make it seem very similar to ‘Cocktail’, which too was a scene-by-scene adaptation of the Hollywood flick ‘Butterfly on the Wheel’. But compared to ‘Cocktail’, ‘Race’ falters on many points and seems not totally up to the mark. Of course it’s not too bad either.

‘Race’ tells the story of Dr. Eby John (Kunchacko Boban) and his wife Niya (Mamta Mohandas), who are face-to-face with a big crisis. Eby, who is a well-known cardiologist, is away in Bangalore while his daughter Achumol is kidnapped and Niya finds herself face-to-face with a guy named Niranjan (Indrajith), who has crept into her house and who now holds her hostage. In the meantime Shwetha (Gowri Munjal), who is Niranjan’s accomplice, gets into Eby’s hotel room in Bangalore and holds him there at gun point and with threats. Eby in Bangalore and Niya in Kerala are cornered and rendered helpless as their daughter is already kidnapped and with Niranjan’s accomplice Eldo (Jagathy Sreekumar). They know that they have no way out; the only thing that they can do is to give in to the demands of Niranjan and his accomplices. They demand a ransom of Rs. 1 crore, which later is increased to 2 crores and then to 3 crores. The story takes off from here.

It’s not wrong to lift a movie and adapt it scene-by-scene. ‘Cocktail’ was one such movie, but the script was well worked out and the film well directed. The performances too were excellent and the film was a treat to watch. But ‘4 Friends’, which was inspired by ‘The Bucket List’, was a real disaster. As for ‘Race’, which is almost scene-to-scene adaptation of ‘Deadline 24 Ghante’, is just about OK. It could have been better, much better and much more lively.
Performances
Indrajith does his role very well. It can’t be said that he doesn’t do justice to his role, but compared to Irfan’s performance in ‘Deadline 24 Ghante’, Indrajith’s performance can of course be said to be unimpressive. Kunchacko Boban does his role perfectly well and Mamta is her usual self Gowri Munjal seems uncomfortable with her role while Jagathy too is just so so.
Technical aspects
The technical aspects- cinematography, editing etc- are in tune with the theme and the plot.
Music
Background score suits the mood while the song, the theme song that accompanies the title, is not up to the mark.
Script
It’s the script, penned jointly by Kukku Surendran and Robin Thirumala and the dialogues, penned by Robin Thirumala, that play foil. Had the script been better and had the dialogues been crispier, the film would have been better.
Direction
Kukku Surendran, who had earlier directed ‘Oraal’ and ‘Veeralipattu’, is in control of things, to an extent. But he could either have gone in for an original subject or else could have seen to it that the script suited the subject that he had lifted.
Overall verdict- Average…poor script. Not much chance at box office.
