My insight

Let us start with one of my insights. I am not sure if you agree with this. Anyway, please read on.

Hollywood has been following the non dramatic approach to filmmaking for ages. The age of shaky camera and blaring loud music is shifting in Malayalam too. This is not the first time this approach is seeing success; K.G George, Bharathan, Padmarajan, Lohithadas, Sibi Malayil, Sreenivasan, Sathyan Anthikkad, Renjith has all realized it earlier and used it effectively. In coming year’s highly dramatic films will be a laughing stock.

Some examples from recent times are Sathya and many RGV films, Violence in Malayalam, Subramaniapuram and all its followers in Tamil. This change has brought Shaji Kailas to flop, and Asif Ali to win in acting front. The last one to realize this trick was Ashik Abu who made the hit film Salt and Pepper.

Indian Rupee is one such film.

Renjith

He became a mentor to all other director with Kerala Café. His Palerimanikyam and Pranchiyettan brought him to another class. The stakes were high for Renjith when people stated comparing him to Padmarajan. His kaleidoscope of films from Narasimham to Summer in Bethlahem, Nandanam to Pranchiyettan, Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal to Devasuram, Ravanaprabu to Thirakkatha showcased his versatility.

In Indian Rupee, Renjith has traveled the path for his viewers beforehand. He knew some people are still not ready to accept Prithviraj. So he tactfully took the first part of story out of hand of protagonist (Prithviraj) and put it into the shoulder of Thilakan and then slowly released it back to the hero, and then it was a smooth run.

In a situation Achutha Menon (Thilakan) provides a solution; if the same was done by the protagonist it would have created the feel of a usual movie.

Acting

Thilakan as Achutha Menon is back in form. Prithviraj did well as Jayaprakash.

Jagathy Sreekumar did a fine job. Mammukoya was ok. Reema Kallingal did the usual stuff.

I think even when good actors act sleeping, they would radiate a charisma. Tinitom couldn’t bring that and was a dull personality throughout the movie; in a scene his mimicry popped up.

In Indian Rupee, money is a concept. Thilakan intervening family matters of Jaya Prakash was interesting. The film has its motivational parts like many Raj Kumar Hirani films

Cinematography et al

Usually, cinematography from S. Kumar was most pleasing to the eyes, but in Indian Rupee it was just ok. Music by Shahbaz Aman was fine. Nothing exceptional about editing and other aspects of this film.

Down side

One question which lingers in mind is that, Jayaprakash is seen escaping from the responsibility from matters concerning his sister’s marriage in an awkward scene, but suddenly in another scene he is found taking risk when the stakes was high (without undergoing a transformation). The character who won’t even try to manage a family situation suddenly changes into a hero. We could have accepted that, if the film was not from neo Renjith.

The climax hasn’t fully satisfied the audience who love commercial cinema.

Even though the song was ok, it was not necessary for the film. The tail end portion was not appealing. What the film lacked was the inherent honesty we saw in Pranchiyettan and the Saint.

Verdict – Would have garnered more audience if given more thought about climax.
