Kottayam: Landslides in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts due to heavy rains. Soil and stones flowed into the road near the BSNL office on Kanamala Eruthavappuzha Road in Kottayam Erumeli South Village. In Kanamala, two houses were destroyed. Many homes were flooded. Soil and water flooded the houses of Antony Theniyappakkal and Robin inside the house. Rob’s mother was buried in the ground but was rescued. Police firefighters arrived at the scene.

The rain, which started at 11 pm late at night, is believed to have caused the landslide. Homes and shops were flooded in the Punchavayal Pakkanam area. It happened in the mountain water patch that came from the forest at night. Troops at the Kanjirapally fire station have evacuated seven flood victims. The Pampady Changanassery team is camping at Kanjirapally Reserve. The road is impassable. The Kanjirapally team is camping in the affected areas. The landslide occurred in the Pathanamthitta Konni Kokkathodu forest area. Houses were flooded on one acre in Kokkad. Those in the area were evacuated. The water level in the Achan Kovil river rose due to heavy rains.

Chennai:  A red alert has been issued in six districts in Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow following heavy rains.  The alert was issued in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Vizhipuram, Tiruvallur and Thiruvannamalai districts.  Heavy rains lashed Chennai yesterday evening.  Subsequently, floods inundated many parts of the city and made life miserable.

 National and state disaster relief forces and fire brigade have been deployed in the area.  About 75,000 policemen have been deployed across the state.  There are 146 relief camps in Chennai.  Educational institutions, including colleges in 24 districts, were given two days off.

Kozhikode: Famous film actress Sharada passed away in Kozhikode. She was undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College.

Sharada started her acting career by acting in plays. She made her film debut in 1979 with Angakuri. During the period 1985–87, she acted in the films Anubandham, Nalkavala, and Anyarude Bhoomi directed by I.V. Shashi.
She has acted in over eighty films including Ulsavappittennu, Sadayam, Sallapam, Kilichundan Mambazham, Ammakkilikoodu, Yugapurushan, and Kuttisrank. She was active in television serials also.

Thiruvananthapuram: Will set up rest houses in Pathanamthitta, Minister PA Mohammad Riyaz said. The rest houses from the Public Works Department in Pathanamthitta will be set up for the convenience of the devotees, the minister said. The minister said in a Facebook post that the department heads have been directed to open the building immediately after providing the necessary furniture and electrical equipment and Rs. 55 lakh has been sanctioned for this.

He said the tile work of the Pathanamthitta KSRTC yard should be completed this week itself.

Kannur: Six senior students have been remanded in custody in connection with the ragging of a junior student at Kanhirode Nehru College.

Mohammad Rashad, Mohammad Tamim, Abdur Qadir, Mohammad Musammil, Mohammad Muhaddis, and Mohammad Safwan were taken into custody. Chakkarakkal police took the six into custody from their homes on Tuesday morning.

They are being questioned by the investigation team. P Anshad, a second-year graduate student who returned after lunch last Friday, was allegedly taken to the toilet by a group of third-year students and beaten.

Hours later, the student regained consciousness at the hospital. Chakkarakkal police, which had initially registered a case of assault, had identified the seriousness of the incident in the ongoing investigation. A case of ragging has also been registered against the accused.
