Six undergraduate students arrived at the college today wearing hijabs and entering the classroom. Upon learning of this, the teachers expelled the students from the class.

Following this, the management suspended the students for a week. The action was taken by the college management alleging that the students deliberately tried to provoke by violating the law. The management alleges that the students, who were evicted by the teachers from the classroom, joined the other students in the protest.

However, the students explained that they had not violated the law and were wearing the same dress as before. Earlier, the Karnataka High Court had upheld a government order banning the wearing of hijab in educational institutions in Karnataka. The High Court ruled that wearing the hijab was not an integral part of Islam and that there was nothing wrong with banning the hijab.

Protests over the hijab also erupted at Mangalore University yesterday. After the University of Mangalore issued a directive to make uniforms compulsory, students wearing hijab were deported from classes. In a meeting held in the presence of the VC, the Karnataka High Court on March 15 ruled that hijab should not be allowed in classrooms.
