Abuse of power; Former President of Maldives sentenced to 11 years in prison

Male:  Former Maldives President Abdullah Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the court. He was convicted of corruption and money laundering. In addition to the prison sentence, a fine of 5 million US dollars has also been imposed, according to various media reports citing the Maldivian daily Awas.

The Maldives Criminal Court found the charges against Abdullah Yameen to be valid and Yameen was found guilty and the Chief Judge Ahmad Shakeel sentenced him. The case was that Yameen misused his position as president and took one million dollars from a private company for resort development. It is alleged that Yameen took this money from former Maldives MP Yusuf Naeem.
Yusuf Naeem was also tried along with Yameen in the case. The court has also found Naeem guilty in the bribery case. Chief Judge Ahmad Shakeel said that it is suspicious that the money shown in the documents was transferred from Yusuf Naeem’s account to Yameen’s account.

Meanwhile, the trial of the case started in the criminal court on January 2 this year. According to Awas’s report, the trial proceedings ended on November 30. The prosecution argued that Yameen should be given the maximum sentence because he was the president of the country at the time of the crime.

Kumali:  At least eight people died when the vehicle of Sabarimala pilgrims fell into a gorge near Idukki Kumily. One is in critical condition.
The accident happened around 11 pm last night. Ten people including a child were in the vehicle. The Tavera car in which the natives of Theni were traveling met with an accident while returning from the pilgrimage. Two people who were injured in the accident were admitted to Theni Medical College. One of them is in critical condition. The child who was in the group was admitted to a private hospital in Kumily.
The Kerala-Tamil Nadu police, fire force, and locals conducted a two-and-a-half-hour-long rescue operation. In the accident, seven people died on the spot.

Chanda Kochhar and her husband arrested in loan fraud case

New Delhi:  CBI has arrested former ICICI CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar in the loan fraud case. The arrest was related to the loan sanctioned when Chanda was the head of the institution. Both are now in CBI custody in a loan conspiracy case. The CBI had earlier registered a case against Chanda, Deepak, and Videocon Group promoter Venugopal Dhoot.

Both will be produced in a special court tomorrow seeking custody. The CBI is investigating charges of misuse of power and criminal conspiracy against them.

Between 2009 and 2011, ICICI Bank extended a Rs 1,875-crore loan to Videocon International Electronics Ltd, allegedly in breach of conditions. Enforcement officials raided Chanda and Deepak’s house and offices in connection with the case. ED also arrested Chanda in 2021.
