Legends of Onam

Kashyapa had two wives, Diti and Aditi, who were the parents of demons and demigods (Asuras and Devas) respectively. Indra, the king of demigods, went to war with the king of Asuras. Mahabali, the King of Asuras, defeated Indra and proceeded to occupy Indra’s territory. Kashyapa, who had gone to the Himalayas to do penance, on his return found Aditi weeping over the defeat of her son, Indra. By divine insight, Kashyapa recognised the cause of grief. Kashyapa tried to console Aditi who was wailing in grief, saying that nothing happens in the world without God’s will and people should go on doing their duties. Kashyapa asked Aditi to pray to Lord Narayana and taught her Payovrata, a ritual that has to be observed from the 12th day of the bright half of Karthika (Sukla-paksha Dvadasi). Since Aditi carried out the Vrata with a pious heart, Lord Narayana appeared before her and informed her that he would himself place a child in her womb and help Indra. Later, on the 12th day of the bright half of the month of Bhadrapada, Aditi gave birth to a son of uncommon effulgence. That child, “Vamana-murti”, demonstrated his divine powers by doing marvellous deeds even when he was a child.

Balichakravarthi (Bali, The Emperor) or Mahabali, was the grandson of Prahlad (son of Hiranyakashipu who met Vishnu in his Narasimha Avatar. Prahalad, despite being an Asura, had great faith in Vishnu. One cannot miss the series of warfare between Vishnu and the Asuras – those born of the breath of God. Bali Maharaj, sat in Prahlad’s lap as a child and learnt love and devotion of Lord Vishnu from Prahlad.

Mahabali’s rule were considered as the golden era of Kerala. The celebration of Onam resounds and chants the following song all over Kerala:
“     When Maveli, our King, ruled the land,

All the people had equality.
And people were joyful and merry;
They were all free from harm.
There was neither anxiety nor sickness,
Death of the children was never even heard of,
There were no lies,
There was neither theft nor deceit,
And no one was false in speech either.
Measures and weights were right;
No one cheated or wronged his neighbor.
When Maveli, our King, ruled the land,
All the people formed one casteless race.

The gods were very annoyed as Bali became the ruler of all the three worlds having defeated the Devas. Violence was inflicted upon the Devas.[1] The gods approached Vishnu and asked for his help them. Mahabali, who was performing the sacrificial rite of Viswajith Yagna or Aswamedha Yagna[2] on the banks of Narmada River, declared that he would give anything that anyone sought from him during this Yagna. He Vishnu, incarnated in the form of Vamana, a dwarf to defeat the Daityas.

Vamana came to the Yaga-shala. As he was approaching them, the sages assembled there perceived the extraordinary effulgence form of the young lad. Mahabali went forth to receive the Brahmin boy with all traditional honours and gave him an eminent seat befitting the status of a holy person. Bali with the usual courtesy given to the people who come to ask for help told him Master! It is my good fortune that you have chosen to honour me with your presence. Whatever you desire, I am here ready to fulfill the same. Vamana smiled and said: “You need not give me anything great. It is enough if you give me that extend of land covered by three footsteps of mine”.

On hearing him, Bali’s preceptor, the Brahmin Shukracharya (a Daitya priest) who had vision of the future told Bali that the one, who had come to take alms from Bali was not an ordinary Brahmin but Lord Narayana Himself who had assumed this form. He advised Bali not to promise the lad anything. But Bali was a king who would never go back on his word. He told his Guru that he would never break his promise as it was a sin. Shukracharya insisted that he should not fulfill the demand of Vamana as he had come to deprive Bali of all his possessions.

Bali, however, was determined to honour the word given to Vamana, begged pardon of his Guru for disregarding his advice. Earlier, while Bali was embarking on the war with Indra, he had prostrated at the feet of his preceptor, Shukracharya, and on his advice he performed the Vishwajit Yagna from which he secured very powerful weapons. It was only because of Shukracharya’s help that he was able to conquer Indra. On this occasion, Bali was not prepared to heed the advice of the same preceptor. Shukracharya cursed Bali, saying: ‘As you have not heeded your Guru’s words, you will be reduced to ashes’. Bali was firm and replied: ‘I am prepared to face any consequence but will not go back on my word’.

Saying so, he asked Vamana to measure the three feet of land as desired by him. All attempts of Shukracharya to dissuade Bali from offering the land desired by Vamana proved futile. Bali considered everyone who came to him as god himself and never refused anyone anything that they have asked. Bali told his Guru: “Prana (life) and Maana (honour) are like the two eyes of a person. Even if life goes, honour should be protected. Knowing that the person that has come now is the Lord Himself, I should be the most fortunate one as the Lord, who gives everything to mankind, is seeking something from me.” Bali boasted that even in Vishnu himself were to come to his sacrifice and ask for anything, Bali would deliver it.[3] Vamana grew in size until he towered above the heavens. With one foot, he measured all of the earth. With the other, he claimed all of the heaven. There was still one foot of territory that Bali owed him. Bali asked to place the final step on his head as the third step of land which Lord Vamana had asked for as alms. Vamana placed the third step on the head of Bali and suppressed him to Patala, the underworld. For the devotion of this Daitya Mahabali, Lord Vishnu (Vamana) granted him rule over Patala. Vamana aka Vishnu granted Bali the boon that he would hold the position of Indra for one Manvantara , thus fulfilling his devotee’s desire ( the office of Indra being a rotating position , changing every Manvantara ) .

As a last wish Mahabali was granted the permission to visit his subjects once a year. Thus, Keralites celebrate Onam festival to commemorate the memory of a Great King Mahabali who would keep his promise. Mahabali fulfilled his name as the great martyr for the sake of Truth (“Satya”). The name “Mahabali” itself means Great Sacrifice.

During Onam, the feast and festive mood of the people, dressed in their best, is considered reminiscent of the prosperous and truthful life of the subjects during Bali’s flawless reign. People wear new clothes (Vastra) during Onam. The ‘Vastra’ also stands for heart. Thus the significance of wearing new clothes is about making the heart new by removing all bad thoughts and feelings. People forgetting their sectarian outlooks, join together to welcome the auspicious ‘Thiruvonam’ day.

Review- Kanthasamy
Producer- Kalaipuli.S.Thanu
Director- Susi Ganeshan
Cast- Vikram, Shriya, Prabhu, Ashish Vidyarthi, Vadivelu etc

Written by : Susi Ganesan
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Distributed By : Kalaipuli International
Budget : Rs.80 crores

Review by : Unni / www.Kerala9.com
So, what do you expect from ‘Kanthasamy’, the latest film from Chiyaan Vikram? Obviously a film where Vikram dons a mask (the posters make us understand that) and leads a crusade against the baddies in our society. And your expectations, if it’s on these lines, is justified, 100 percent. And ‘Kanthasamy’ is shot on a big budget, extensively on foreign locations and in style. Yes, style it is. And substance? That of course is a question rather difficult to answer.

Well coming to the movie. It all begins from a temple dedicated to Kanthasamy (another name of Lord Muruga) in a small town in Tamil Nadu where you can submit your pleas and plaints in the form of letters which you can tie on to a tree. The temple is flocked by hundreds, especially the poor and the needy, who are on the look-out for an end to their worries. And each one of these hundreds of thousands of pleas is taken care of. Our hero, Kanthasamy IPS (Vikram), who’s working with the CBI, sees to it that these grievances are all redressed. He dons a mask and the get-up of a rooster, and strutting around like one, appears, mostly in the night, flying around, fighting et al and grabbing from the extremely rich the money that they had earned by unfair means and then ensures that these, packed in small bags, reaches the hands of the needy and the poor. Assisted by a group of his friends, all of them working in government departments that deals with detecting and amassing illegally earned money, Kanthasamy IPS goes about conducting raids on the baddies (typical filmi baddies, especially the Shankar brand of baddies), busting with a hammer the places where the illegal money is hidden. But nobody knows the connection between Kanthasamy IPS and the Kanthasamy who redresses the grievances of the people. It’s in this context that the DIG of police Paranthaman (Prabhu) takes it upon himself to nab the person who’s behind all this. So it’s now the cop versus the hero. And into this comes in our heroine, Subbalakshmi (Shriya), who is the daughter of one of the baddies, played by Ashish Vidyarthi.

Well, a good subject for a masala flick, with enough scope for all ingredients too. To some extent Susi Ganeshan and team had worked it out well. But there are places where we feel disgusted with the proceedings and the film, as a whole, doesn’t seem great work. On day one, in a theatre in Ernakulam, a young guy was seen texting a message to a friend, just about thirty minutes into the movie- “Am watching Kanthasamy…paisa muthalaavum (worth your money)…come watch Shriya…”. At that point he was right. But at a later stage, well past the interval, didn’t I see the very same guy tending to yawn and looking all exhausted? You even seem to be wondering what Shriya is doing in the movie. You have seen it all before, it seems at certain points. And some scenes are simply unimpressive. Vadivelu is not bad, but some of his scenes have gone waste. And the scene where Vikram appears in a feminine get-up, there’s nothing outstanding about it at all. Doesn’t it seem disgusting too? Well, there are some flashy, well shot sequences that leave you wonder struck. There are beautiful locales that are filmed impressively. But on the whole, the film is no outstanding work at all. Just so so. Nothing compared to ‘Anniyan’. And even ‘Bheema’ was better. Was wondering why the people of Kerala throng theatres to watch ‘Kanthasamy’ in such large numbers (the turn out on day one at all centres was great, something that you would like to call ‘terrific’) while they don’t seem to care a whit for better-made films like ‘Nadodigal’. Of course Tamilians need to be appreciated because if they throng the theatres to see such mass entertainers, they also show the same enthusiasm for seeing films like ‘Nadodigal’, ‘Subrahmaniyapuram’, ‘Autograph’ etc. This incidentally reminded me of a group of young guys in a small town in our ‘educated’, ‘elite’ Kerala dancing drunkenly and then going for a fist-fight with the theatre management, all during the song “Kangal irandaal…” in ‘Subrahmaniyapuram’, while their counterparts in Tamil Nadu had the sensibility to enjoy and relish the song and the movie as a whole itself.

Performances

Vikram has given a good performance as Kanthasamy. A dedicated actor that he is, he has attempted to do full justice to the role. But this definitely is not his best and nowhere near his performance in ‘Anniyan’ or ‘Sethu’. Shriya is good and adds to the oomph factor too with her dance numbers and all. It’s really great that our directors don’t need to go seeking other actresses for the ‘Oomph’ factor when the heroines can do it themselves. Prabhu is just about OK and has nothing much to do. Ashish Vidyarthi is his usual self. And so is Vadivelu.

Technical aspects

Technically the film is no doubt a treat to watch. Cinematography by Ekambaran is excellent. And art-director Thotta Tharani has done a brilliant job. Editing, costume-designing etc deserve mention.

Music

The background score is fine, but the songs are just about OK. Vikram anyhow has proved himself a good singer. ‘Excuse me, Mr. Kanthasamy…”, “Meow, Meow…” etc are no doubt trendy, but won’t have a long life. The songs have been visualised in the most flashy of manners.

Script

Nothing much to say about the script, penned by Susi Ganeshan himself. It’s all just average and usual. He could have worked it out better.

Direction

Coming to direction, it seems Susi, groomed under Mani Rathinam, has tried going the Shankar way to make am impact at the box office (‘Kanthasamy’ no doubt will earn him more mileage than his earlier three films) and has eventually landed up being neither here nor there. Of course he is well in control of things and have filmed things the way he wanted them to be. But he seems a bit confused about his way of filmmaking. Susi anyhow has given a good performance as an actor, appearing in a guest-like role.

Overall verdict- Time pass…Stylish, but not outstanding.

Review : Ritu
Producer : Vachan Shetty
Director : Shyamaprasad
Cast : Nishan,Asif,Rima,Jaya Menon . etc.
Story,screenplay,dialogues : Joshua Newtonn

Review by : Unni / www.Kerala9.com

‘Rithu’ is a bag of mixes. A story of friendship, love etc set against the backdrop of the IT sector- that’s what the movie is basically about. There are references to some other things pertaining to modern life too. The story revolves around Sharath (Nishan), Sunny (Asif) and Varsha (Rima), who have been friends since their childhood. The three of them later become IT professionals, with Sharath even going to the US for a brief stint. After Sharath returns from the US, he gathers his two friends and the three of them join an IT firm headed by Zareena (Jaya Menon) and her husband Balagopalan (Prakash Menon). As for Sharath, he never wanted to be an IT guy. But it was his father who compelled Sharath to take to the IT sector. His creativity was thus set aside and Sharath became a good IT professional. He is chosen the team leader for a new project in Zareena’s company. Sharath had dreams of a different nature. He dreams of owning a house by the lakeside and using it for writing and dwelling with his friends. He had also loved Varsha, who too earlier wanted to be his life-partner but who is behaving rather queerly now. Sunny too seems to be staying aloof. Things seem to be much different for poor Sharath. And it’s from here that things take a new turn in the life of these three friends.
The story is of course good and all elements are well balanced. The climax is well worked out. But on the whole there are things that go wrong. For example, there are scenes in which the director and the scenarist seem to have gone a bit overboard in presenting things pertaining to the IT sector, at times exaggerating it a bit. There are scenes that could have been trimmed a bit and even polished to a great extent. There are dialogues that could have been made better. There are scenes that make you boo or yawn. There are scenes that you think have been deliberately put in, to make it seem intellectual stuff. Of course there are scenes that you could identify with and some that even touch you. In total, ‘Rithu’, as said earlier, is a bag of mixes and could have been better.
Performances
Most of the actors, who are mostly debutantes, have done justice to their roles. The lead players, Nishan, Rima and Asif are good, though Nishan could have been better, it seems at places. The supporting actors are OK.
Technical aspects
Shamdat has done a good job of the cinematography. The frames have all been composed excellently well and jell well with the mood of the film. The editing by Vinod Sukumaran and art-direction by Premachandran also are good.
Music
The background score is fine and enhances the mood very much. Of the songs, “Pularumo Raavu…” and “Kukukukoo theevandi…” are good.
Script
Debutant scenarist Joshua Newton has done a good work of the story, though on the screenplay side he misses a mark or two. He could have made a more realistic portrayal of things in the IT sector. He also seems to be bent on putting in some clichéd things to give the intellectual feel.
Direction
Shyamaprasad’s direction is good, but not as good as in his best films. He could definitely have made this film much better.

Overall verdict : Bag of mixes!

No Onam 2009 for Malayalam Cinema

1

Malayalam film industry will not be celebrating Onam this year! It is not because some of the finest performers and creative people like Murali, Rajan.P.Dev and Lohitadas passed away in the last 45 days, but due to commercial reasons! This year Onam falls on September 2, at a time when Muslims in the state will be observing Noyambu or fast as part of the holy month of Ramzan. In Malabar area, the highest collecting territory for films in Kerala, theatre attendance normally falls during this period, so it does not make sense to release new films which may not take an opening. There will not be any new releases, from Malayalam superstars like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Dileep and Pritviraj. Kalabhavan Mani s Black and White may be the only release during the festival season. All the biggies like Mammootty s Pazhassi Raja, Mohanlal s Angel John, Prithviraj s Robinhood has now been postponed to Id-Ul-Fitr day when the Ramzan fasting ends on September 18 or 19.

Film : Daddy Cool
Producer : Bose Kurian USA, Alwin Antony
Director : Ashiq Abu
Main : Cast- Mammootty, Master Dhananjay,Richa Pallod
Story,screenplay,dialogues : Ashiq Abu

Review By : Unni

‘Daddy Cool’ is a movie that goes against our expectations. You expect it to be the story of a father and a son, as the posters very well suggest. The film begins on this note and progresses till interval (which comes in just 55 minutes) on this note. But post interval, the film takes a totally different twist and turns into an action movie, and that too one that delivers nothing new or extraordinary. The film of course keeps us glued to our seats, eager to see what happens next. But when finally we are out of it, it all seems to confuse us. We find it difficult to make out what was it that we had actually seen. ‘Daddy Cool’ is all about a Daddy and a Son, Antony Simon (Mammootty) and his son Adhi (Master Dhananjay). Antony is a Circle Inspector with the Crime Branch. He and Adhi are like friends and both of them are mad after cricket. And this craze for cricket even makes Antony turn callous in his work, eventually getting him suspended. Though those in his team (Vijayaraghavan, Baburaj etc) take chances to rebuke him every now and then, Roy (Biju Menon), who is also a member of their team and who is in love with Antony’s sister in law (Radhika), stands by him always. Antony’s wife Annie (Richa Pallod), often irked by the carelessness and callousness of Antony and Adhi, pack her bags and goes to her parents, who however are living in the adjacent flat, only to return in a couple of days. Anyhow things take a new turn after Antony, with all support from Roy, decides to nab the very same Bheembhai (Ashish Vidyarthi), an underworld guy who had once escaped his hands, all because of his folly.
The film is not badly crafted on the whole. The scenes are all well conceived, the flow smooth and everything goes ok. But the story, that proves to be the villain. If the film had stood firm on one track and developed on that particular track, it would have been much much better. As of now, ‘Daddy Cool’ leaves much to be desired.
Performances
Mammootty as Antony Simon is good and appears smart and stylish in many scenes. Master Dhananjay renders good support as Adhi. Richa Pallod, who makes her debut in Malayalam, is just OK. Biju Menon is good. ‘Classmates’ fame Radhika looks much different, playing Annie’s sister. The others in the cast are all good.
Technical aspects
The frames of the film betray the fact that the director has been associated with ad-film making. The cinematography (by Samir Thahir), editing (by V.Sajan) and art work (by Suresh Kollam) are all in sync with the theme and the situations.
Music
There is nothing extraordinary to say about the songs, which are not at all impressive, though colourful on the main.
Script
It’s the story and the script, by director Ashiq Abu himself, that plays foil to his debut directorial venture. If he had remained firm to one track, especially regarding the story, the film would have been more impressive, on the whole.
Direction
Debutant director Ashiq Abu deserves to be appreciated, for having done an excellent work of the direction part. He is very much in control of things and his experience as a maker of ad-films has stood him in good stead in the song visualization. Ashiq of course shows all promises of a bright future in Malayalam Cinema, representing the new generation film-makers who have started emerging recently. Of course he should either improve himself on the script side or entrust that job with someone else in future endeavours.

Overall verdict- Not that cool!
