Review by : Unni / www.Kerala9.com

Re-making an old movie, and that too one that’s not at all there in the minds of the film-viewers of today, is no less than a challenge. It’s this challenge that Lal Jose has taken up, by re-making ‘Neelathamara’, a film that most in the present generation of film viewers in Kerala have perhaps not seen. The challenge arises not just from the fact that the original ‘Neelathamara’ has become a forgotten chapter, but also because today’s theatre-going audience, which comprises mostly of youth as far as Kerala is concerned, doesn’t like seeing period flicks, which ‘Neelathamara’ is, as the story takes place three decades back. But the enterprising filmmaker that Lal Jose is, he has re-made ‘Neelathamara’ in a way that it would appeal to almost everyone, with all ingredients perfectly blended. But whether or not our much prejudiced and pre-conceived audience likes the film is what is to be seen.
Well, ‘Neelathamara’ tells a simple story. A young girl, Kunjimaalu (Archana Kavi) comes to work in a house as a housemaid and ultimately falls in love with Haridas (Kailash), the young son of the mistress (Sreedevi Unni) of the house. Kunjimaalu gets seduced by Haridas, who later marries another girl Ratnam (Samvritha) and forgets the whole Kunjimaalu episode and carries on in life as if nothing has happened.
The story is simple, but since it’s blended with a whole lot of things and presents before us a great picture of life in a Kerala village, the film has much more to speak about rather than just narrate the story. The belief surrounding the blooming of the ‘neelathamara’, the various characters who prop up the plot as supporting characters, the lives and fate of these different characters etc are woven up in a really wonderful manner in the film. The way the theme of love is treated and the bold, mature and sometimes stoic manner in which the women characters behave and react to situations and their plight have all been handled delicately. ‘Neelathamara’ stands out as a film that takes us to the late 1970’s (the main incidents narrated take place in 1979) and manage to link it to the present, i.e., 2009 in a very relevant and successful manner. Many subtle moments and equally subtle performances mark the film, which is the outcome of real team work, with Lal Jose and M.T.Vasudevan Nair playing decisive roles and the others doing their parts perfectly well.

Performances

Debutante Archana Kavi, who plays Kunjimaalu, wins our praise in all respects. She has been able to do justice to her role in a real good manner. Kailash, who also makes his debut playing Haridas, is also good. Samvritha Sunil delivers a marvelous performance and Sreedevi Unni, the mother of Monisha (the national award winning actress who passed away some years back in a road accident, at a very young age), is also good while Suresh, the brother of Ambika (who was the heroine in the original ‘Neelathamara’), gives a fairly good performance as Appoottan, Kunjimaalu’s cousin who wants to marry her. Parvathy, a very popular television anchor who earlier acted in films like ‘Time’ and ‘Thalappavu’, is good as the older Kunjimaalu. The others are OK, though some actors, being debutants and amateur actors, can be said to be doing it in a rather imperfect manner, which however can be overlooked, as it doesn’t affect the total fabric of the movie.

Technical aspects

‘Neelathamara’ has some real good work put in by the technicians, including cinematographer Vijay Ulaganath, editor Ranjan Abraham and art-director Gokul Das. Special mention must also be made of costume-designing, done by Cuckoo Parameswaran, which no doubt is one of the highlights of the film. Sound-designing has also been done with much care and the results are good.

Music

The background score jells with the mood of the film, but it’s the songs that stand out. Vayalar Sharath Chandra Varma has penned some good lyrics that have been set to tune excellently well, by Vidyasagar. Lal Jose has done a good work of the song-visualisation, which impresses almost everyone.

Script

When M.T.Vasudevan Nair is in charge of script, that itself is guarantee that the script will be top-notch. The scenes, the climax, the characterization etc have been taken care of in a brilliant manner.

Direction

There is often a talk that when M.T.Vasudevan Nair is penning the script, the director hasn’t much to do and the film remains an MT film, whoever the director be. Can’t say whether this is true or not, but anyhow with ‘Neelathamara’, one thing is certain; it’s as much Lal Jose’s film as it’s MT’s. Lal Jose has made his presence felt and you come out of the theatres praising the man, who has given us so many good movies, for delivering one more wonderful movie. Lal Jose has done full justice to the subject and the way he has shot the song-sequences deserves special mention. Critics can of course find faults with the film and highlight them, because nothing that man does is perfect; and hence ‘Neelathamara’ may have its share of imperfections, if you desire to point them out. But there is no denying that in the present state of affairs in Malayalam Cinema, ‘Neelathamara’ is no less than a whiff of fresh air.

Overall verdict- Beautiful! excellent! A whiff of fresh air!

Review by : Unni / Kerala9.com

Viji Thampy is a director who has proved himself adept at making different kind of movies. If he has made thrillers like ‘Satyameva Jayate’ and ‘Witness’, he has also made enjoyable entertainers like ‘Pidakozhi Koovunna Noottandu’, ‘Avittam Thirunaal Arogya Sreeman’ etc. This time, with ‘Chemistry’, he attempts a blend of the supernatural and investigation drama, which results in a film that’s rather unimpressive, and maybe Viji Thampy’s worst film ever.

‘Chemistry’ starts with three young girls, all students of a reputed school and close friends, committing suicide. The Superintendent of Police Sreekanth (Mukesh) comes in, to begin the investigations. But the academic year draws to an end with nothing much happening in the name of progress, in the investigations. The next academic year begins and young Parvathy (Sharanya Mohan), the niece of Sreekanth, getting admitted to the same school. Parvathy comes to stay in the same room in which Gauri (Shilpa Bala), one of the three girls who had committed suicide, had stayed. Very soon, strange things start happening in the school premises and things take a totally new turn.

There may not be anything new about the story that ‘Chemistry’ seeks to narrate, but still the film could have been impressive and thrilling, had it been scripted in a better manner and had the direction and editing been handled better. But as of now, ‘Chemistry’ fails to impress on all counts. It doesn’t thrill us in any way and neither does it entertain us. There are many loose ends that affect the totality of the film in an adverse manner. In total the film is rather callously made, especially since it comes from a director who has made taut, slick thrillers.

Performances

Sharanya Mohan, who had given an impressive performance earlier in the Tamil film ‘Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu’, looks good as Parvathy and does fair justice to the role. Shilpa Bala, who made her debut with ‘Orkkuka Vallappozhum’, is just about OK. Mukesh has nothing much to do and doesn’t impress us much. There’s nothing much to say about the performances of Vineeth, Jagathy Sreekmar, Harisri Ashokan, Vijayakumar, Suresh Krishna etc. Siddique is good, but his character doesn’t stand out or impress too much. Same about Manoj.K.Jayan.

Technical aspects

Nothing much to say about the technical features. It’s all average. The film had enough scope for technical excellence, but in a hurry to finish the film and get it released or maybe due to budget-related constraints and maybe due to a poor script, the technical aspects seem to have been neglected.

Music

Background score by M.Jayachandran is OK and syncs with the mood. About the songs, composed by M.Jayachandran and one composed by Vinu Kiriyath, they don’t impress at all.

Script

It’s the script that has played foul as far as ‘Chemistry’ is concerned. Vinu Kiriyath should either have handled the script with care and maybe he could have devoted more time to writing the script or better he could have had someone else do the screenplay and the dialogues too, which lack the much-needed ‘punch’.

Direction

Viji Thampy seems to have made ‘Chemistry’ in a very callous and hurried manner. The scenes are all mostly ill-conceived and shot rather poorly. The film could have been a good thriller, had Viji Thampy given better attention to the direction aspect and had it been scripted better. ‘Chemistry’ as such doesn’t thrill you at all.

Overall verdict- Unimpressive. Thriller that doesn’t thrill you.

Review by : Unni / Kerala9.com

After being in the cans for too long, a few years in fact, T.K.Rajeev Kumar’s ‘Seetha Kalyanam’ is finally here. Though there are some good things about the movie, in total it’s a let-down and the delay in release has resulted in a poor turn out at the box office too.
As for the theme and the plot, ‘Seetha Kalyanam’ has nothing new to offer. It’s all simple. Sreeni (Jayaram) is a software professional working in Bangalore and having a nice time with his colleagues, especially a few girls, of whom Nimisha (Jyothika) is his close friend. His marriage is fixed to Abhirami (Geethu Mohandas) in the traditional way and he travels home, to get married in the traditional Brahmin manner, in a marriage ceremony spanning seven days. His colleagues, Nimisha and her gang, reach Kerala to be part of the ceremony. As the marriage ceremony goes on, Nimisha begins to realize that she loves Sreeni. She tries not to tell him, but at last, unable to help it, she reveals it all to Sreeni. It’s then that Sreeni too realizes his love for her. The marriage ceremony is half way through. It’s from here that the plot develops.
Hey, this is ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, you may say. It sure is, if you look at it that way. So what? There is no rule that a film should be 100% original. (How many are, these days?) Well, the ‘My Best Friends’ Wedding’ thing apart, ‘Seethakalyanam’ is just a so so kind of film with more of flaws than merits. The proceedings seem to lag a bit or maybe too much at places and there are many things that seem unconvincing. There are some scenes well shot and some poorly executed. A couple of songs stand out in rendition as well as in picturisation while the others are unimpressive. The comedy track goes all out of control. The ambience of a traditional Brahmin marriage is partly felt and partly not. The frames are all colourful and the presence of the big mirrors works on a symbolic level too, to an extent. Too many characters, but the characterization aspect fares too poor. So, in short, ‘Seethakalyanam’ goes wrong to a great extent and the plusses don’t work out favourably either.

Performances
In the lead role, Jayaram is of course OK. His performance anyhow doesn’t stand out and the role could very well have been handled by anyone. Jyothika is good and does justice to her role. Indrajith and Geethu Mohandas are OK with their roles, though they have nothing much to do, performance-wise. Siddique does a good work of his role and shines well, but the others don’t get much to do. So many popular faces in the cast is a good thing and it’s to be mentioned that everyone does justice to his or her bit, in their respective styles. But it’s real sad to have veteran Tamil actress Manorama and the late Oduvil Unnikrishnan sans their respective voices and styles of dialogue rendition, which form part of their identity. (Well, technical reasons, quite understandable ones).

Technical aspects
Rajiv Ravi has done a great work of the cinematography, composing the frames as colourfully as possible. Art-work by Prakash Moorthy and Rasi and editing by Arun Kumar is good.

Music
Background score by Sharath jells well with the mood of the film. Of the songs, set to tune by Sreenivas, ‘Ragasudharasamayi pranayam…” stands out and is picturised well too. “Doore Doore…” is OK.

Script
Director T.K.Rajeev Kumar, who has penned the script too, has tried to do a good work of it all, but there are times when he seems to fail utterly. While some of the scenes are well-written, some of them fail to make any impact. The comedy track, woven around Janardhanan, Kalpana, Bindu Panicker, Jagadeesh and Bheeman Reghu, fall short of all standards and don’t evoke laughter at all. He has also failed on the characterization side.

Direction
There are plusses as well as minuses to speak of, when it comes to direction. The theme, though not new or different, could have made for a good, enjoyable movie, had Rajeev Kumar paid more attention to things. As of now, the minuses outweigh the plusses and the film goes all wrong.

Overall verdict- Don’t expect much. Goes wrong at places.

malayalam movie Uthara SwayamvaramProducer : Santhosh Pavithram
Director : Ramakanth Sarju
Main Cast : Jayasurya,Roma etc.
Music : M.Jayachandran
Lyrics : Gireesh Puthencherry
Cinematography : Saloo George
Story : Ramakanth Sarju

Screenplay, dialogues : J.Pallasserry
Review by : Unni / www.Kerala9.com

The first thought that hits us as we come out of the theatres after watching ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ is, “Well, I could have stayed back home and had a nap instead”. Having a nap or even doing nothing may be better than go watch this Jayasurya-Roma starrer. Anyhow there is another side to this. Thinking on realistic terms, you may even tend to justify your having seen the movie, with, “Well, what more could I have expected out of this movie?”
Well, there is nothing much ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ has to offer. Rameshan (Jayasurya), working in Bangalore, happens to see a girl lying injured on the road, her face covered by blood. She had been hit by some vehicle and he too, like the others, tends to move away in a rather indifferent manner. But as he is moving away, he takes one more look at her face and is shocked. He takes her to the hospital. Soon his roommate Tony (Sudheesh) and their friend Dr. Thomas Paul (Saikumar) come seeking him and tell them that since he has done his duty and saved a life, he need not wait there at the hospital. They take him away with them, but he seems sad. It’s when they question him repeatedly that he narrates his story. The girl that he had got admitted in the hospital was Uthara (Roma), whom he used to call ‘Ponnu’ and whom he had loved ever since his childhood. They had belonged to the same village, Kannadi, in Palakkad district and in their childhood, Rameshan had even saved Ponnu from drowning in a well. Rameshan’s father Sreedhara Kurup (Balachandra Menon) was a middle class man who ran a provision store and Ponnu’s father Mahadevan (Laloo Aalex) was a rich guy who runs a jewellery shop. Anyway, Rameshan and Ponnu were quite close to each other and Rameshan even loved Ponnu in his heart of hearts. And then, Ponnu gets engaged to another guy, but after some twists in the story, Ponnu and Rameshan get married, only to be separated on the very next day following some misunderstandings. This is how the story progresses in ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’, a film that sometimes seems OK and sometimes tests your patience.
The problem with ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ is not just that it has nothing new to offer. The story is all predictable and moves on predictable lines. The comedy-track, handled by Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Harisri Ashokan and others, is distasteful and sometimes even lewd. Nothing impresses as far as the movie is concerned and you wish such a movie hadn’t even been made.

Performances
Jayasurya and Roma are just about OK in their respective roles. Laloo Aalex is his very usual self. Balachandra Menon as usual does his role convincingly, with some of his stock mannerisms that have been aped a lot by mimicry guys and of course by Jayasurya in the film in one scene. The others are just about OK. Seeing Suraaj Venjaramoodu in stereotyped roles has now started becoming intolerable. The problem is the film doesn’t give any of the actors any scope for performance.

Technical aspects
There is nothing outstanding to mention about the technical aspects, which don’t impress us in any way.

Music
The music is OK. As for the songs, the song that begins “Mallike mallike…” is quite unimpressive while the bit that begins as “Amma urangunnu…” has been rendered quite soulfully, though it doesn’t seem outstanding.

Script
J.Pallasserry, who has scripted many entertainers of this genre, fails to impress us with his writing in ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’. The scenes are all poorly written and the humour distastefully handled. The instance of Pathalam Shaji (Suraaj Venjaramoodu) aiming to set a record for himself as the guy who had met with the most number of accidents and finally getting killed quite accidentally in a road accident could have been worked out in a real touching manner, but Pallasserry fails to do that too. Characterization doesn’t work out well in ‘Uthara Swayamvaram’ and that makes it a real intolerable movie.

Direction

Ramakanth Sarju, who begins the movie by expressing gratitude to his ‘gurus’, should have learnt more from them. He should have chosen a better subject or else should have worked out this subject in a better manner. Sorry Sarju. Better luck, next time.

Overall verdict- Unimpressive! Waste of money and time.
