Review By : Unni/Kerala9.com
‘Urumi’ may have its flaws, but it has got more plusses than minuses, in fact much more of plusses than our usual films and is very much unlike any film that we see in Malayalam.
‘Urumi’, as has already been told through posters and promotional trailers, is the story of a person who wanted to kill Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who came to India in 1498 and then paid two visits later and also became the Portuguese viceroy in India. The film explores history from a purely Indian perspective and tells the story of Chiraykkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj), who had pledged to kill Vasco da Gama, who had inflicted cruelties upon many Indians and who was merciless in his ways. Kelu Nayanar is accompanied by his friend and trader Vavvali (Prabhudeva). Into this story come characters like Arackal Aisha (Genelia), Chiraykkal Bala (Nitya Menon), Chenicheri Kurup (Jagathy Sreekumar) etc.
The film begins from the modern day, where we meet Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and Tarzan (Prabhudeva), two friends who take life in an easy-going manner and who want to make some easy money. They are brought face to face with some facts from history that has got something to do with Krishna Das and which also would affect his future and perspective.
The way the film has blended the present with the past, using the same artists (Prithviraj, Prabhudeva, Genelia, Nitya Menon, Vidya Balan, Jagathy Sreekumar etc) in both the present and the past to play different characters and drawing parallels is indeed notable. The film stands out by way of notable performances, excellent technical features, good music and a really remarkable script. Of course there are scenes where we find things a bit tedious, like in the final battle scenes and all, there are places where the makers should have made the film crisper, there are places where we feel the director is not able to rise to the level demanded by the script and the subject, there are times when we feel the film could have been trimmed a bit. But overall, ‘Urumi’ is a movie that stands out. It’s excellent work, but I am sure we can’t have more of such movies as such a big budget is not feasible, except very rarely.
Performances
Prithviraj is simply superb as Kelu Nayanar. Prabhudeva too puts in a commendable performance. Genelia leaves an impact with a role which no one would imagine her to be doing. Amol Gupte, who is already proven to be a great performer, makes his mark, Jagathy, Nitya Menon, Vidya Balan, Arya etc do justice to their respective roles. Everyone is good in their respective roles.
Technical aspects
Santosh Sivan’s cinematography, as usual, with locations hitherto unexplored in Malayalam Cinema, simply leaves us spellbound. Sreekar Prasad, ace editor, too does a wonderful job, but the film could have been trimmed a bit it seems. The other technical aspects too sync in perfectly well.
Music
Deepak Dev has done a wonderful job of the songs and the background music. I had never before expected Deepak Dev to be part of such a project, a period film. Hats off to Deepak Dev.
Script
Shankar Ramakrishnan, who is in charge of the story and script, has no doubt done great amount of research. That shows not just in the screenplay, but in the dialogues too. The film owes a lot to the excellent script that he had done. Kudos Shankar.
Direction
Santosh Sivan is of course better as a cinematographer than a director. But he no doubt has directed ‘Urumi’ as the subject deserves. There is no point saying that some other director could have done better, because ‘Urumi’ is a Santosh Sivan film and he has done it the way he wanted it to be. Perhaps only someone like him could make the feel come live. Of course there are portions which he should have trimmed and made in the way it’s handled in Hollywood films like ‘Brave Heart’. But it’s to be remembered that he is making a film with a big budget and he has to keep in mind that it’s the audience of Kerala who’s coming to see his films and not the international kind of audience. So, he has definitely had to make the film the way it would appeal to average film goers too. Good work, Santosh Sivan and team.
Overall verdict- Different, excellent, must-see movie…

Urumi Live Review
Urumi (Malayalam: ഉറുമി, Translation: Curling Blade, Title in English: Vasco da Gama) is an upcoming Malayalam historical epic film directed by Santosh Sivan, written by Shankar Ramakrishnan, and produced by Prithviraj, Shaji Natesan, and Santosh Sivan under their new production company, August Cinema. It stars Prithviraj, Genelia D’Souza[3] Prabhu Deva and Nithya Menon, and features Vidya Balan, Arya and Tabu in cameo appearances. The film is being made at a budget of more than 20 crore rupees, making it the second most expensive Malayalam film ever made after Pazhassi Raja. Urumi gets a dubbed release in Tamil as Padhinaitham Nootrandu Uraivaal and English as Vasco da Gama. The film has received international attention with the screening of its trailer at the Hong Kong film festival
Urumi is set in the backdrop of the fierce warrior clans of Northern Kerala in the sixteenth century and focuses on the cult of Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj), a man with an epic mission. His target and mission is Dom Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. The film is spread between the second and third visit of Gama to India and chronicles a varied version of how Gama could have met a bloody death in AD 1524. In the journey of Kelu, he has to encounter the seemless conflicts within the kinsmen and also kings, ministers, peasants and a warring Muslim warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia) of the famed Arackal Sultanat. Kelu has a forte, a legendary golden Urumi, specially made from the left over ornaments of the dead women and children who were burnt alive in the massacre of a Mecca Ship, Miri, commanded to be set on fire and drowned by Vasco da Gama during his second visit to Kerala in AD 1502. Kelu is supported by Vavvali (Prabhudeva), his childhood friend and in a way his elder brother, though he comes from the muslim neighborhood. The film also has mystical characters like Vidya Balan, who plays Makkom, a displaced Devi Diety in the Oracle form. Kelu tracks his mission through the wildy roads of treachery, treason and a hidden passion to reach a master plan to create his own army against the mighty Empire. His action in creating an organized revolt becomes the first of its kind movement against the first Colonial advance in India.

Review by – Unni / www.Kerala9.com
If you go to see ‘August 15’ with ‘August 1’ in mind, you’re likely to be disappointed. And even if you hadn’t seen ‘August 1’, ‘August 15’ would seem just average stuff. The script could have been better; more emphasis could have been given to the characterization aspect.
‘August 15’ has Mammootty playing Perumal once again. The Crime Branch officer who had embarked on a mission to save the Chief Minister in ‘August 1’, is once again on a similar mission. The State Chief Minister (played by Nedumudi Venu) is targeted by a professional killer (played by Siddique). Perumal is out to save the Chief Minister. How he does it forms the plot of ‘August 15’.
The plot is not bad. But scenarist S.N.Swamy and director Shaji Kailas should have shown more care towards developing the plot, in a comprehensive manner. It should be remembered that ‘August 1’ still has its appeal not just because of the character of Perumal. Of course Perumal was simply dashing. But the film owes its success and popularity to the presence of Sukumaran and the way his character, that of the Chief Minister, was moulded. The professional killer, played by Captain Raju, too was a highlight of the movie. But in ‘August 15’, the chief minister doesn’t make that kind of an impact and the character of the professional killer too deserved more attention. The only supporting character that gets noted is Jagathy Sreekumar’s, but the character simply vanishes at some point. There seems to be lots of things lacking as regards ‘August 15’ and hence, for those who expected a slicker version of ‘August 1’ and for those who love Shaji Kailas films, ‘August 15’ is a disappointment. It’s just tolerable stuff, scenes being created in the most clichéd of manners and characterization aspect being neglected to a great degree.
Performances
Mammootty is smart as Perumal, but his performance seems to lack something. The fire that characterized the Perumal of ‘August 1’ is missing. Siddique as the unnamed professional killer is also good, but he could have been better, had the script been better. Jagathy Sreekumar, as long as he is there in the film, is good. The others are all good, but there’s no outstanding performance from anyone.
Technical aspects
The cinematography, editing and art-work of course suit the theme, but to be frank I had expected a higher level of technical brilliance and better frames, especially since the film is directed by Shaji Kailas. Editing could have been much better.
Music
Rajamani’s background score jells with the theme and the mood.
Script
S.N.Swamy has done an OK kind of work with the script. In fact the script could have been better, much much better. It’s the characterization aspect that seems to have been affected. The professional killer, played by Siddique, which should have been the highlight of the film, could have been worked out in a better way. Jagathy Sreekumar’s character and some other characters simply vanish once the film is on action mode.
Direction
Shaji Kailas is good as director, just about good. But the pace, the element of thrill and the slick editing and technical brilliance that characterize Shaji Kailas films seems to be missing. He could have done more justice to the subject.
Overall verdict- Forget ‘August 1’, ‘August 15’ would seem tolerable.
