Movie :Pranayam

Cast: Mohanlal, Anupam Kher, Jayaprada, Anoop Menon

Director: Blessy

Music Director: M Jayachandran

Review By : Thanseer M.A

Regret – It may be the greatest pain for a man. Master crafter Blessy took a leaf out from the book of remorse to craft the movie, Pranayam.

Blessy, who made honor with his debut film, had lost ground with Calcutta News and Bramaram. But Pranayam is a film which brings back the maker to the fore and affirms its director as one of the greatest in Malayalam. It is wonderful how Blessy gets these beautiful names for his films, or should it be said, that the beauty starts from the name itself.

 Plot

On a lighter note Pranayam can be said as a triangular love story of the aged.

Anupam Kher as Achutha Menon finds his divorced wife Gracy (Jaypradha) when he comes to live with his son. Gracy is now the wife of Mathews (Mohanlal) a former professor whose right half is paralyzed with stroke and always in a wheelchair. Achutha Menon has divorced his wife on some misunderstanding which he repents even today.

The meeting of lovers after 40 years drastically changes the life of the three involved. Film travels through the emotional complexities of this woman, her husband and her former husband. Mathews show a tint of envy in beginning, it soon fades away. Gracy is the sun in which these planets revolve.

The film’s second part is about rediscovering the beauty of life and takes us to the exterior. The first part of film is full of interior and is only 1 hour long. This film is a nice romantic movie which has uniqueness.

 Actors

It is heard that Mohanlal was offered the role of Achutha Menon. After reading the script, Lal wanted to portray Mathews. His decision only made the film better.

This is the first time we see Anupam Kher in a Malayalam film. His representation of character was genuine. Mohanlal as Mathews was wonderful.

Audience couldn’t replace Jayapradha for another actress, that’s how she fared in this film.  Anoop Menon who is usually seen in good movies did well. Dhanya Mary Varghese was pleasing.

 Technical Aspect

The film got the standard of a Bollywood movie. Remarkable work from the cameraman Satheesh Kurup who earlier did Anwar.  Editing by Raja Mohammed is classic. Music by M. Jayachandran is memorable. The locations are picturesque. The second half of the movie is more appealing than the first.
Theatre was not full and people knew what to expect. The only negative which can be told about the film is it is a bit preachy.

The film Pranayam flows from the soul of its maker. Everyone in the audience will have some expectation about the climax. Pranayam is not for the people who are looking only for jolly comedy crackers; this is a soulful film which has a good story to tell. Blessy proved that he is back on track. All who experienced love will get magical moments in this film.

Teja Bhai and Family Review

19

Movie Name: Teja Bhai & Family

Director: Deepu Karunakaran

Produced by :Muralidharan,Santha Murali

Cast:Prithviraj, Akhila, Suraj Venjaramoodu,SalimKumar,Premkumar

Review By : Thanseer M.A

This Onam Prithviraj led the slot of Janapriya Nayakan – Dileep, who regularly does comedy entertainers. Dileep took a back seat while the youth icon pulled his card through the new flick Teja Bhai and Family.

With some exception like Traffic, Apoorva raagam etc every successful Malayalam film has used comedy to tell the story, whether it is Salt and Pepper or Pranchiyettan. The trend continues.

 Plot

Prithviraj as Teja Bhai is an underworld don in Kuala Lumpur, who falls in love with Vedika. Vedika’s father Damodarji wanted her to marry a man from good family having high social status and no criminal record. To marry Vedika, Teja has to set up a family.  Suraj who arrives as Swamy Vasya Vajas brings some duplicate relatives. The story line is fabricated to make a hit, but some twists and dialogues are unbearable. The film used all the tricks in trade. At some point it seemed like the content of second class comedy films.

Cast

Prithviraj looked fabulous. His appearance and style challenges every other young man.  His comedy also has bettered.

Suraj’s numbers were well appreciated. For a film like this which can be considered a high budget, half the cost will be recouped on the tricks of Suraj Venjaranmood himself. Akhila Sasidharan who debuted in Karyasthan paired with the hero. As most commercial films, heroine didn’t have much to do. Salim Kumar, Jagathy Jagatheesh, Kochu Preman, Premkumar, Suman, Ashokan, Indrans, Thalaivasal Vijay, Bindu Panicker, Manju Pillai all enacted their parts well. A former sizzler comes for a single scene.

 Direction and script

This film by Deepu Karunakaran who directed Winter and Crazy Gopalan, is glossy. His frames are picturesque and neat. The film took influence from Chitram and many other films including Basha. The script is Udaya Krishna – Sibi K Thomas stuff. References of other film had bought laughter. Some portion of this star studded film was taken as a Priyadarshan films. Many dialogues are redundant. Apart from the comedy part the film’s story and twists are too infantile. The climax seemed to be never ending and people never watched it as they know what is coming. The Malaysian part is taken well but viewers thought what the buildup was for.

Camera work of Shamdat is apt. Posters are catchy. Songs are ok; ‘Oru Madhurakinavin Lahariyil’ song seems to work well. The film had already pulled enough crowds. Anantha Vision of P K Muralidharan and Shantha Murali, who produced many successful films including Chocolate, Classmates and Robinhood.can continue their wining streak.

This is a festive film which you can take family.

Mythili As Chattakkari

0

The young talented actress, who debuted in Ranjith’s ‘Palerimanikyam’ and proved her caliber, is now getting into a new track.

She will be doing ‘Julie’, the Anglo Indian girl in K S Sethumadhavan’s ‘Chattakkari’, a role which was made alive by Lakshmi in 1974. The remake is directed by K S Sethumadhavan’s son, Santhosh Sethumadhavan.

This will surely give Mythili a break in the industry. But for that she has to excel in the role more than Lakshmi did. The film world looks forward for just another classic remake after ‘Rathinirvedam’.

Shakeela As A Nun…!

0

There was a Shakeela era in the Malayalam film industry years before… The film industry which was once on the verge of collapse was rebuilt again when the ‘A’ films of this actress pushed in people to the theatres. But Shakeela was never able to build up a good opinion among the audience as a talented actress.

Here steps Shakeela, again into the industry…! “Ee Abhaya Theeram”, by the debutant director Alex Thankachan, brings her back to the Malayalam film world, by offering her a strong character. Sister Mary Magdalene, fondly called by the children as ‘Maryamma’, is her character. As the name indicates she is a nun who gives and takes love from young minds.

Will she be able to use this opportunity to rebuild her image…? Let’s wait and see…
