Lucky Star’ is worth a watch, especially for the family audience. I won’t say it’s great movie or that it’s something that you have never seen before. The Jayaram starrer, directed by debutant Deepu Anthikkad, discusses surrogacy and the surrogate mother vs. real parents issue, which was the subject of the 1989 film ‘Dasharatham’, directed by Sibi Malayil and starring Mohanlal in the lead (there of course have been films in other languages on this subject and related subjects). But still, ‘Lucky Star’ is decent stuff, neatly packaged and presented and with the emotional element almost intact.

Ranjith (Jayaram) is a tailor based in Chennai and he caters to all kinds of customers, including costume designers in films. He lives in Chennai along with his wife Janaki (Rachana Narayanankutty) and their little daughter. Though they are in the midst of all kinds of financial worries, they dream of big things, like getting their daughter admitted in one of the most prestigious schools in Chennai, earning big money by setting up a garments factory in a shop that Ranjith has acquired in an industrial area and such other things. Janaki also spares no occasion to boast of big things to neighbours and is a bit of a snob too. It’s in the meantime that Dr. John Chittilapally (Mukesh), a doctor who specializes in infertility treatment and whom Ranjith had met once, comes seeking Ranjith’s help in finding a surrogate mother for the baby of a US-based Malayalee couple. Ranjith and John go about searching for a surrogate mother, but end up finding no one. Finally, when it dawns on Janaki that they could gain a fortune (10 lacs rupees is the remuneration promised) if she agrees to being the surrogate mother. Ranjith and Janaki thus agree to take it. The agreement is signed. Thus Janaki gives birth to the NRI couple’s son, with plans to hand it over to them the very next day after the delivery. Neither Janaki nor Ranjith has any qualms about it; they are focused on the money they are to get (They had received an advance of Rs. 5 lacs and would get the remaining amount when the child is delivered to the NRI parents). But little do they know that the NRI parents won’t turn up for the child. From here the story takes a turn…

So now you have an idea of what the story is all about; and you perhaps think you know what all is going to happen afterwards. You may be partially right and partially wrong. Anyway, the story develops from here and moves on, as expected, towards an emotionally charged climax. But Deepu Anthikkad somehow manages to tone down the melodrama element, making it bearable and even enjoyable. The script, the performance and the narration is good and ‘Lucky Star’ thus turns out to be a decent watch, for the family audience and for the general audience as well. I bet you won’t have objections watching the movie…

Performance

Jayaram plays the character of Ranjith in his usual style and is very much convincing. Rachana Narayanankutty, who makes her big screen debut playing Janaki, gives a very impressive performance. Equally impressive is debutante Pooja Ramachandran, as the NRI Swapna. Mukesh is his very usual self as Dr. John Chittilapally. T G Ravi doesn’t have much to do. Same is the case with Mamukoya. The child artists are all good.

Technical aspects

Cinematography by Vijay Ulaganath is good; V T Sreejith Menon has rendered full support as the editor.

Music

The background score suits the mood of the film. The songs too are fine and may remain popular for some time.

Script

Deepu Anthikkad has done a well-balanced work of the script. Of course there is no denying the fact that the subject could have been handled in a better manner. There definitely are many ways to tell a story or a theme, Deepu Anthikkad has done it the way he wanted to and his script-work is fairly good.

Direction

Deepu Anthikkad is in full control of things. The way he has directed ‘Lucky Star’, in the years to come, he may emerge as one of the popular filmmakers in mainstream Malayalam cinema.

VerdictDecent watch, especially for the family audience!

Music– Mohan Sithara

Lyrics: Rafeeque Ahmed

Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

There are flaws, there are some hiccups as regards the flow of the film…but Umer Muhammed’s ‘Radio’ is indeed a film that needs to be reviewed, analysed and discussed.

The film opens on an impressive note and you expect a multi-narrative film with a totally unconventional theme and subject. But then, after a while you get the feel that it’s getting a bit tedious. You turn and look right and left, you find people in a similar situation as yours and think, not so aloud, “Is this what I expected to see?”. But then, at half-time, you feel you have arrived somewhere and there is likely to be a take-off. You get your snacks and drinks, wash off that sleep from your face and with renewed vigour, sit down to watch the rest, anticipating something good. However, things don’t seem to brighten up immediately after interval. But then, at some point, it starts picking up momentum and by the time the film ends, you are impressed. “Yes, I am satisfied, despite the flaws”, you mumble as you get out of the hall. I heard people saying this aloud, to friends, outside the theatre.

This is ‘Radio’, in brief. You’re disappointed with the movie at one stage and happy at another. Finally, as you come out of the theatre, you get the feel that you have seen something different. Do a close analysis and you feel it could have been better. In total, an appreciable venture which could of course have been better, to some extent.

‘Radio’ is the story of two young girls who work as sales girls in a jewelry. Priya (Sarayu) has come to town to earn some money to support her family. There she becomes friends with Shwetha (Iniya), who offers to accommodate her at her flat till she gets some other  place to stay. At Shwetha’s place, Priya meets Manu (Nishan), who is introduced as Shwetha’s friend, guide, care-taker etc. Slowly it dawns on us first (and later on Priya) that Shwetha earns big buck by doubling up as a call girl for rich clients and that Manu is her friend, business-partner and agent. This is the point at which Priya and Shwetha clash with each other and from there, the story takes a new turn.

The focus, all through, is on Priya and Shwetha and hence most other characters, save a couple of them, suffer as regards characterization. But you don’t notice it as the whole of the proceedings centres around the two pivotal characters and you rarely get the time to think about the rest. The other two characters who get noted at times are Manu and Dr. Daniel D’Souza (Thalaivasal Vijay). Jayan,  played by Jayakrishnan, too makes an impression. You feel that of the many other artists in the cast, some could have been utilized better, with better scripting and characterization. Yes, indeed! The characters played by Thesni Khan, Kochupreman, Nihal, Harisri Ashokan, Manianpillai Raju etc thus have more of a shadowy existence in the film and these could have been handled in a better way.

The thing that I liked about the movie is that there is not much of moralizing and instead it’s two different perspectives that first clash and then, after reaching sort of a consensus, they both move forward, seeking their destinies. The end of the story too is impressive. I feel, ‘Radio’ is a film that you can watch as it is definitely different from the usual stuff. Flaws are many and crucial, but still I feel most of them can be forgiven. Umer Muhammed should outgrow and rectify those in his next movie and I am sure he could deliver something great…

Performance

The film belongs mostly to Iniya, on the performance side. She plays her part with conviction. Sarayu is good, but there are moments where we see her doing it as if she is doing some boring television serial. Yes, there are places where she should have been much more expressive with her expressions rather than with her words. Yet, she is OK. Nishan is good and so is Jayakrishnan. Thalaivasal Vijay appeals to us as he gets to do something different, but you feel his portion could have been handled a bit more effectively and could have been a bit trimmed and toned down. The rest of them don’t have much to do. Irshad, in his brief role, is good.

Technical aspects

The technical aspects are all in tune with the mood and the tempo of the film. Cinematography (by Utpal V Nayanar and Deepu S Unni) and art-direction (by Sabu Ram) are good.

Music

Background score suits the mood of the movie. Of the songs, “Edi penne…” may stay in our minds for some time while “Mukile…”, though soulful, may not make much of an impact.

Script

Script, by the director Umer and Nizam S Rawuther, is not bad, but should have been better. They deserve a pat on the shoulder for having tried a subject with a difference and also for the good work as regards the pivotal characters. But they should have reworked the script many times and it would have been much better. There are scenes that should either have been reworked or avoided. Similarly they should have given more attention to characterization, on a broader perspective. On the whole, their work is good, despite the flaws.

Direction

Umer is in control as the director, but next time he has to go for a better and well worked-out script. Anyway, he deserves appreciation for having tried a female-oriented subject, that too one with a difference.

VerdictDifferent! A rather brave attempt! Good, could have been better…

Rebecca Uthup Kizhakkemala Malayalam Movie Review

Producer– Venkatesh S Upadhyaya

Cast– Ann Augustine, Saikumar, Shari, Jishnu, Siddharth, Kalabhavan Mani etc.

Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

If you know what to expect out of a Sunderdas movie, ‘Rebecca Uthup Kizhakemala’ may not fully disappoint you. But a total look at it and the film may seem on the whole unimpressive. The main issue is it’s a bit of a confused mess. You’re led to believe that it’s the story of an athlete and you end up watching a family flick, one that resembles many you have seen over the course of years. There is nothing new, nothing much exciting…but if you are OK with seeing the same old story that you have been seeing all the while, then OK, ‘Rebecca Uthup Kizhakemala’ could be watched once.
Rebecca Uthup (Ann Augustine), who hails from Kizhakemala, a small town in the hills, is an athlete who has won a gold at the ASIAD. Her father Uthup (Saikumar), who is a hard-working farmer, had left his native place Kanjirapally years back with his wife Sosamma (Shari), who belonged to a very affluent family. Sosamma had been distanced from her family ever since, but after Rebecca wins a gold at the Asian games and appears on TV, her grandmother Annamma (Sukumari) yearns to see her daughter and grandchildren. Thus, Rebecca’s uncles (P.Sreekumar and Shanavas) go for reconciliatory talks. As a result things work out well and the near ones are all re-united. Soon Rebecca’s uncles come up with a marriage proposal for her. The guy is Kuruvila (Jishnu), a rich young planter from Kanjirapally. Meanwhile Rebecca aims for the Olympics and intensifies practice. She gets a new coach, Arjun (Siddharth), who is in fact her childhood friend. So now, there are two guys in Rebecca’s life and the story develops from here.
I won’t say the film is terribly boring; it didn’t bore me to the point of irritation. But there is nothing special about it either. You know what it’s all going to be and you may even get irritated at the many twists and turns in the story. The sports element is left unutilized. You expect to see more of the story of a sport-star and you end up seeing a mundane family flick. You feel you could have avoided it and watched one of the TV soaps instead.
In short, ‘Rebecca Uthup Kizhakemala’ is just an average kind of film, one that doesn’t make a difference, whether you watch it or not…
Performance
Ann Augustine is just about OK; maybe someone else could have handled the role better. She doesn’t look like an athlete and seems to be doing the role the same way she did ‘Elsamma Enna Aankutty’. Saikumar does a good job of his role. Jishnu and Siddharth have improved a lot in the recent times and their performances in the film are good. Shari is also good. All the others suit their characters well, but there is nothing to be called outstanding as regards anyone’s performance.
Technical aspects
The technical aspects are all just about in tune with the mood and the tempo of the film. Jibu Jacob has delivered some beautiful frames of the hilly locales.
Music
Background score is OK, songs average. Anyhow, Ratheesh Vega’s attempt to reproduce the 1971 song ‘Kizhakkemalayile Vennilavoru…’ is good and the song stands out as one of the highlights of the movie.
Script
V.C.Ashok could have worked out the sports angle in a better way; the film is OK, just about OK, as a family flick, but as a sports-based one, it fails to impress. Seems like the writer is a bit confused on what to deliver or perhaps about what the audience may like. Rebecca’s zeal as an athlete and her attempts to make it big in sports should have been his primary concern and then the film would have been different and much better.
Direction
Sunderdas, a veteran of many movies, is in control of things. But the film suffers because of a script that’s not up to the mark.
Verdict Average! Neither here nor there kind of film…
