New Delhi: India’s indigenously built Scorpion class submarine INS Karanj has been commissioned. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and former Chief of Naval Staff VS Shekhawat were also present on the occasion. Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Naval Staff, said the Navy has been committed to localization and defense self-sufficiency for the past seven decades.

At present, there are 42 ships and submarines, 40 of which are under construction at shipyards across the country, he said. INS Karanj is the third of six class submarines to be built under a 2005 agreement with the French company DCNS. The submarine’s experiments at sea had been completed. The feature of the Scorpion class submarine is that it can attack both at sea and inland. It can also destroy other submarines and attack mines.

The submarine, which is 220 feet long and 40 feet high, can travel at 11 nautical miles above sea level and 20 nautical miles under the sea.
