The Center has sent a letter to the states after the news that the cases of Covid are increasing in China and the US. The Ministry of Health’s move is to monitor the genetic change of covid viruses by increasing genome sequencing of positive cases by tracking coronavirus variants using the INSACOG network system.
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a consortium of more than 50 laboratories to monitor genetic variations in the Covid-19 virus. Genome sequencing is a technique used to identify and understand the characteristics of the coronavirus and to observe the genetic change.
“Because of the sudden surge in the number of Covid cases in Japan, the United States of America, the Republic of Korea, Brazil, and China, it is imperative to prepare genome sequencing of all positive case samples through the INSACOG network,” Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter to states.
