•Status: 70%

REVIEW BY: ARUNJYOTHI. R. VALIYAVEETIL.

•PROS:
1: Direction.
2: Story, Screenplay & Dialogues.
3: Performance of actors.
4: Music and BGM.
5: Cinematography.
6: Technical Aspects.

•CONS:
1: Predictable Story.

ONE WORD: A completely different package of thrilling and psychological experience.

•STORY IDEA:

The story begins on an isolated mental asylum in the high range of Kerala where a doctor comes to check the condition of the hospital and patients. The story further revolves around the premise of the hospital with unexpected events on a thriller backdrop.

•ANALYSIS TO DIRECTION, STORY, SCREENPLAY, AND DIALOGUES:

The movie is directed by the debutant director Vivek Sreekumar who himself also handles the story, screenplay, and dialogues.

As a debutant director, Vivek Sreekumar can be proud of himself for making a gripping psychological romantic movie. The way the director had executed the film with the backdrop of many genres deserves a huge applause. The film has various categories of subject like psychology, romance, actions, horror, sentiments and all these were brilliantly directed by the writer. The making held by Vivek is the first winning key success of Athiran.

The director had also mastery captured the unique acting talents of the actor Fahadh Faasil and Sai Pallavi victoriously according to the story and screenplay. Importantly, there were many chances to form diversion and lagging but when the movie travels to the main plot the maker had genuinely won to write and direct the complete movie according to the core of the plot and also to avoid tedious occurrence.

The story was engaging till the end but the twist towards the climax will be predictable but still due to the phenomenal making style the movie will keep on hooking the audience till the end.

The screenplay and dialogues written by the director was first class because the movie and the script revolve with various incidents and events and for the setting, so the maker had done a wonderful effort throughout the movie to bring out an authentic feel. The using of each subject in the screenplay was excellent because the story demands the elements of romance, actions, sentiments, betrayal, parenthood, horrors, psychology so ultimately the director was able to write these factors successfully according to the soul of the plot without making confusing stuff.

Another important winning component to be noted in the direction and the writing is the effective using of Kalari martial arts and its culture. In many movies, we had seen the aspect of Kalari but in Athiran the implementation of Kalari was on another striking level. Whatever the maker had shown about Kalari was a visual treat with the presence of our favorite movie star in the casting.

The entire dialogues in the film were astounding because the conversation between every character was having a realistic sense and also the vibe in the sharp and catchy dialogues had given a different feel of thoughts. Also, the catchy conversation between the character were having the soulful momentum in building the real impact which will definitely dominate the audience to engage in the film.

So overall the ultimate winning credits of Athiran lie in the court of Vivek Sreekumar through his direction, story, screenplay, and dialogues which conveys eventful and truly gives every viewer an unusual different punch and glow to celebrate.

PERFORMANCE OF ACTORS:

The movie Athiran comes with the casting of Fahadh Faasil, Sai Pallavi, Athul Kulkarni, Renji Panicker, Lena, Nandu, Sudev Nair, Shanthi Krishna, Leona Lishoy, Surabhi Lakshmi, Vijay Menon, and Prakash Raj.

Fahadh Faasil with his twist oriented character delivers another career-best performance. Thr entire performance and acting of Fahadh Faasil was spectacular with his unique style. The seriousness and the various characterization was acted out astoundingly. The action and stunts of Fahadh were speechless with his stylish and salient moves. The emotional scenes were predominant and the romantic scenes with Sai Pallavi were memorable. No word to say it was his unbelievable show time.

Sai Pallavi as Nithya did a shocking and superior performance. Her screen presence until the end will surely haunt every viewer because the acting was purely special and conspicuous. The body language of her for the martial art Kalari was sensational. The disability in her character and the acting to it was noteworthy. The cuteness of her outlook and the romantic scenes were magical. She just stole the show the Fahadh Faasil.

Athul Kulkarni as the chief doctor delivered a mind-blowing job. The suspicious and negative shade was acted out unbelievably by Athul Kulkarni. The attitude as a chief doctor and the villain shadow was safer in his hands. His combination scenes with Fahadh was thrilling and engaging. His action styles were also terrific.

The supporting roles of Lena, Surabhi Lakshmi, Shanthi Krishna, Leona Lishoy was also first class. Everyone did total justice to their respective characters with the acting of giving out the real emotions. Lena’s performance deserves a special mention.

Renji Panicker did a spellbinding performance by his genuine acting and daring action moves on Kalari. Sudev Nair and Vijay Menon as the patient were impressive and Nandhu as the worker of the hospital also did a notable job. His situational comedies had worked out well. Prakash Raj with his surprising cameo role did a top-notch performance.

MUSIC & TECHNICAL ASPECTS:

The musical work of the movie is composed by PS Jayhari and Ghibran. The songs were tuned by PS Jayahari and the background score was handled by Ghibran.

The song ‘Pavizha Mazha’ sung by KS Harisankar had given a romantic feel by its intense lyrics which was written by the composer. Also, the song ‘Ee Thazhvare’ had created a curiosity feel and the lyrics of Engandiyoor Chandrashekaran was matching perfectly to set the scenes. The other song ‘Aattuthottil’ sung by Vinay Sasikumar showed the intensity of parenthood.

As a psychological horror thriller film, the Background score master Ghibran had done an extreme sincere work for giving out the exemplary tunes. For the thrilling scenes, BGM had set the flawless mood and for the romantic scenes, the background score had given a loveable experience. The BGM tunes for the emotional scenes had also given the right sentimental feel.

The cinematography by Anu Moothedath is praiseworthy. The beautiful frames of nature were delightful to the eyes. The camera movements for the action sequences were captivating. The close-up shots in the crucial scenes especially at showing the emotions of love, sadness, curiosity, and anger were irresistible. The editing of Ayoob Khan was sharp and clear with the perfect cuts without making mismatches.

The Art Director deserves a big thumbs up for making the realistic and convincing sets. The entire members behind the stunts and action also deserve huge applause. The costume designer had also done an impressive job for bringing out the right wardrobes.

OVERALL

Therefore to conclude, by the clever making in direction, story, technical aspects and by the performance of actors, Athiran had given me an unforgettable experience. So in all manner, Athiran is an extremely fascinating movie with the victorious components which will definitely thrill every type of audience.

VERDICT: Complete Worth Watch.

Madhura Raja Review

Review for Madhuraraja:

•Language: Malayalam.
•Genre: Action Comedy Drama.
•Duration: 02 Hours 27 Minutes.
•Theatre: Ajantha Theatre Trivandrum.
•Status: 60%

REVIEW BY: ARUNJYOTHI. R. VALIYAVEETIL.

PROS:
1: Direction.
2: Performance of actors.
3: Cinematography.
4: Music and Background Score.

•CONS:
1: Predictable Story.
2: Half baked Screenplay.
3: Editing.
4: Stunts.
5: Art Direction.

ONE WORD: Madhuraraja, an average movie and a treat for Mammootty Fans.

•STORY IDEA:
An illegal hooch runs an entire village in his control by doing his dirty business. Only one man can save the people and the village. Madhuraraja arrives to help his family and the people.

ANALYSIS TO DIRECTION, STORY, SCREENPLAY, AND DIALOGUES:

The movie is directed by the hitmaker Vysakh and the story, screenplay and dialogues are written by Udaykrishna.

As well all know the director Vysakh is brilliant for making a complete package of commercial entertaining movies for every type of audience which will definitely consist of all the elements for a worthy watch. So after the industrial hit Pulimurugan, he comes with the sequel of his super hit movie Pokkiriraja.

So when he comes with the Madhuraraja he executes the movie with his same directional style for making a striking performance for Mammootty. The entire direction held by Vysakh was passionate but he was not able to end the movie as perfect as the first part because of the fully predictable story and unworked screenplay.

The main problem with the movie is the storyline. The story doesn’t offer anything new and the twist and turn which the writer had implemented doesn’t have any impact to pass the authentic thrill. The various moments in the story was really unrealistic and logic-less.

If the writer had given more efforts to the screenplay Madhuraraja could have been given more thrilling and as an engaging worth movie. The movie has various incidents aiming with a various twist and turn but sadly these targeted factors don’t have any impact to pass the authentic thrill.

The screenplay of the movie was having the combined factors of actions, love, emotions, politics, betrayal, brotherhood, etc, so sadly, the director had done his best but the story writer was failed to execute these elements to show its intensity and impact. The way the makers had ended the movie and the climax which the writers had written was poor and overdramatic with the same old repeating stuff of every commercial movie.

The comedies in the film were entertaining but when the movie reaches to the main plot the film suffers a lot to make it as more appealing for the audience because of the half baked screenplay and cliche storyline. The story was travelling at a fast pace which offers eventful but the targeted mass scenes had only partially worked which resulted out in lacking the strong punches.

The movie was cleverly targeted for Mammootty fans and for the fans the movie will be a treat because of the remarkable screen presence of their favorite star Mammootty.

The dialogues in the movie were filled with punch conversations in which half of them worked but remaining as I said earlier was concluded on an average level. The comedy dialogue was hilarious and most of the humor had worked out. The emotional dialogues were also sentimental.

So overall the director Vysakh had done a good job in his direction but sadly the script and writing of Udaykrishna don’t come up to the level of Pokkiriraja. If he had written the script much more carefully with engaging elements the movie could have been ended as a perfect worth watch film.

•PERFORMANCE OF ACTORS:
The movie comes with a huge stat casting which includes Mammootty, Tamil actor Jai, Jagapathi Babu, Narain, Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, Nedumudi Venu, Salim Kumar, Kalabhavan Shajon, Charan Raj, Dharamajan Bolgatty, Biju Kuttan, Mani Kuttan, Anusree, Anna Reshma Rajan, Shamna Khasim, Mahima Nambiar and Sunny Leone for an item number.

Mammootty as Madhuraraja was outstanding by his energetic performance. His entire performance was magnificent with his unique style. His humor and his own English language were entertaining. His actions were also terrific with his brilliant moves.

Jai as Chinnan had an important role. His actions were superb and his romantic scenes were also good. Also, his scenes with Mammootty were also first class.

Jagapathi Babu as the villain who played the character Nadeshan did a surpassing performance. His negative shade and characterization were wonderful. The lip sinking also matched genuinely. His against actions with Mammootty was thrilling and his acting was on upper-level.

Siddique role Rajendra Babu IPS was surprising with a twist and his performance was notable. The supporting roles of Vijayaraghavan as Krishnan Mama and Nedumudi Venu as Madhavan Nair did total justice to their respective characters. Santosh Keezhattoor as the police head constable and Jayan Chertala did a noteworthy performance.

Salim Kumar as Manoharan Mangalodayam, Biju Kuttan, Kalabhavan Shajon, Ramesh Pisharody as a journalist and Noby Marcos entertained with their comedies.

Ansuree as Vasanthi did a strong performance and her emotional scenes were also amazing. Mahima Nambiar as Meenakshi was gorgeous with her outlook and with her traditional Kerala costumes. The romantic scenes of Mahima Nambiar were also adorable. Anna Reshma Rajan as Lissy who did the nurse character was also good.

The item number of Sunny Leone was glamorous with her marvelous outlook and incredible dance moves.

•MUSIC & TECHNICAL ASPECTS :
The musical work of the movie is composed by the hitmaker Gopi Sunder. The song ‘Kandile Kandile’ sung by Anwar Sadath was average with a festival mode backdrop and the song was moderate in setting the scene. The theme music ‘Raja Raja Raja’ sung by Gopi Sunder was pretty good but not perfect as the old theme music of the first part. The item song of Sunny Leone ‘Moha Mundiri’ sung by Sithara Krishnakumar was good and her vocals were perfect but the lyrics written by Harinarayanan was second-rate. The background score was on the with the same style of Gopi Sunder which was impressive. The BGM at emotional scenes were impressive.

The cinematography by Shaji Kumar was adequate with quality visuals. The camera movements for the action sequences was striking with impressive shots. The close up frames and high angle frames were also amazing.

The editing of Mahesh Narayanan and Sunil.S.Pillai was not that crisp and clear which gives some sort of mismatches in the cuts to the next scenes.

The stunts and actions choreographed by Peter Hein were ordinary with similar choreographing style and pattern. Whatever we had seen from his earlier movies the similar stunts, the location, the lighting techniques, movements, etc was also put back into Madhuraraja.

The Visual Effects by the group Prism and Pixels was ok and the Art Direction held by Shajie Naduvil was good but not great, the sets were not having originality especially the backdrop of election campaigns and the locations for forest action sequences.

•OVERALL:
So overall Madhuraraja is a typical movie for Mammootty Fans. The movie is average but won’t disappoint for a one time watch. It’s better to watch with fewer expectations.

VERDICT: Average.
•RATING: 2.5/5.
