Bihar Assembly Elections in Two Phases; Voting on November 6 and 11, Results on November 14

Patna: The Election Commission of India has announced that the Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases — on November 6 and November 11, with counting of votes on November 14.The notification for the first phase will be issued on October 10, with nominations closing on October 17 and scrutiny on October 18. For the second phase, nominations close on October 20, scrutiny will be on October 21, and the last date for withdrawal is October 23.Bihar has 3.92 crore male, 3.50 crore female, and 1,725 transgender voters, with 14.01 lakh new voters added this year. The state will have 90,712 polling stations, all equipped with live webcasting facilities.

Kozhikode: A new case of amoebic meningoencephalitis — a rare and serious brain infection — has been confirmed in Kerala. The patient, a six-year-old girl from Malappuram, is undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Her condition is reported to be stable.This is the second confirmed case of the disease currently under treatment in the state.

Stockholm: The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their pioneering research on immune cells. Their studies on peripheral immune tolerance and regulatory T cells revealed how these cells protect the body from autoimmune diseases — conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.

The Nobel Prize will be formally awarded on December 10.

Electric Vehicle Prices to Match Petrol Cars Within Six Months: Gadkari

New Delhi: Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has assured that within the next four to six months, electric vehicles (EVs) in India will be priced on par with petrol vehicles. Speaking at the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit, Gadkari said the government aims to make India the top automobile hub globally within the next five years.

India currently spends around 22 lakh crore annually on fuel imports, he noted, adding that fossil fuels not only drain the economy but also cause severe environmental problems. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels is crucial for both the nation’s progress and environmental sustainability, the minister emphasized.

Bank Cheques to Clear Same Day from Saturday

Thiruvananthapuram: Starting Saturday, commercial banks across India will process and clear cheques on the same day, as per new RBI guidelines. Major banks, including SBI, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, will implement the system.Under the new policy, cheques deposited between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. must be scanned and cleared by 7 p.m. the same day. The receiving bank must decide by then whether to accept or reject the cheque; otherwise, it will be deemed accepted. Once settlement is complete, the amount will be credited to the beneficiary’s account within an hour, provided sufficient funds are available in the issuer’s account. Currently, most banks take at least two working days for clearance.

Ottawa: Following shootings and arson attacks on two theatres in Ontario, screenings of Indian films have been suspended in Canadian theatres. Theatres linked the incidents to the screening of South Asian films, leading to the withdrawal of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 and Pawan Kalyan’s They Call Him OG.Attackers reportedly used flammable liquid to set the theatre entrance on fire, causing minor damage. While police have not revealed the motive, reports suggest possible links to Khalistani extremists.“The repeated threats and attacks connected with Indian film screenings are concerning. To ensure a safe and welcoming environment for our communities, we have decided to suspend Indian films,” theatre owners announced.

Chennai: The Madras High Court has dismissed the anticipatory bail plea filed by TVK leaders in connection with the Karur tragedy. The petition by state leaders Busi Anand and Nirmal Kumar was rejected by the Madurai Bench of the High Court. Anand is the second-in-command in the party. Sources suggest that both leaders may face arrest soon.

Jan Shatabdi Express Gets Stop at Changanassery

Kottayam: The Kannur–Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express has been granted a stop at Changanassery. MP Suresh Kodikunnil announced that the Kannur–Thiruvananthapuram (12981) and Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur (12082) Jan Shatabdi Express trains will halt there. He noted on Facebook that this approval came after continuous discussions with the Railway Ministry. With this stop, hundreds of passengers from the Malabar region, who earlier had to alight at Kottayam and continue by road, will now be able to reach Changanassery directly and return the same day.
