Thiruvananthapuram: Private buses in the state will go on indefinite strike from Tuesday. The strike is demanding an increase in fares. Bus owners’ organizations are also demanding a diesel subsidy for private buses. Officials at the Bus Operators’ Association Coordination said the bus industry was in crisis and owners were on the verge of suicide.

Meanwhile, locals in Periyar expressed concern over the sudden opening of spillway shutters, which were closed yesterday, without giving proper warning about reopening. Kerala has asked Tamil Nadu to provide information at least an hour before the shutters open.

Widespread rain is forecast in the state on Thursday. A cyclone has formed off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu in the south-western Bay of Bengal.

The low-pressure area formed in the southeastern Bay of Bengal is presently located above the southeastern Arabian Sea and above Lakshadweep. The Central Meteorological Department said the low-pressure area is likely to move north-northwest over the next 48 hours.

A yellow alert was issued on Wednesday in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.
