New York: The Reuters team that photographed the covid epidemic in India has won the Pulitzer Prize. Danish Siddiqui, who was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan last July, is among the award-winning Reuters team in the Feature Photography category.

Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, and Amit Dave are the others in the group. Danish Siddiqui is the recipient of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for his portrayal of the plight of Rohingya refugees.

The Miami Herald has won an award in the Breaking News category for reporting on the tragedy of a multi-story building collapse in the US state of Florida that killed 98 people. The Washington Post has won the Social Service Award for its coverage of the violence at the U.S. House of Representatives on Capitol Hill.

Rupee hits record low against the dollar

New Delhi: The rupee today depreciated to an all-time low value. The rupee had closed at 77.41 against the dollar in yesterday’s trade. The rupee had touched a record low of 76.98 in March. The rupee depreciated further against the dollar. The rupee had lost 55 paise to close at 76.90 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday.

Forex dealers said fresh capital inflows into equities by foreign investors and a weak opening in the stock market also kept the rupee sentiment firm. Experts say the tightening of the covid lockdown in Shanghai could seriously affect all Asian stocks. Against this backdrop, the rupee is likely to depreciate further.

Forex dealers said besides the rise in bond yields and a weak opening in the stock market, the Indian rupee was heading for a record low against the dollar. At the National Stock Exchange, the Sensex was down 1.34 percent and the NSE Nifty was down 21.34 percent.

800 kg of cannabis worth Rs 2 crore was seized in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Cyberabad police have seized 800 kg of cannabis worth Rs 2 crore from Hyderabad in Telangana. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident. Police have nabbed a man who was trying to smuggle cannabis from Andhra Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana.

The search was carried out following a tip-off received by the Special Operations Team (SOT) in the Shamshabad zone. Truck driver Khushi Mohammad and cleaner Sonu Singh were arrested. Cyberabad Police Commissioner Stephen Ravindra said the two were from Uttar Pradesh and the other three accused were absconding.

Eight killed in road mishap in Telangana

Hyderabad: Eight people, including six women, were killed and 20 others injured in a collision between a lorry and a mini truck in Telangana’s Kamareddy district on Sunday evening.

The lorry collided with a mini truck coming from the opposite direction of the road at Yellareddy Mandal around 5 pm. Two died on the spot and three died on the way to the hospital, Kamareddy District Superintendent of Police B Srinivas Reddy said.

The injured were rushed to hospital. The Prime Minister has announced Rs 2 lakh as relief to the families of those killed in the accident.

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has said that the allegation that the statements of officials of the Chinese-based mobile maker Xiaomi’s company in India were forcibly recorded was baseless. Shopping mall collapsed; 53 deaths in China

Beijing: The death toll from a building collapse in China has risen to 53, officials say. A shopping mall in the city of Changsha collapsed last Friday.
