Parliament passes Sri Lanka’s Interim Budget; Only five members were opposed

Colombo:  Parliament has passed the interim budget for Sri Lanka, which is reeling under a severe economic crisis. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe presented the budget. In the 225-member assembly, 115 members voted in favor while the main opposition SJB abstained from the vote. Only five members voted against the interim budget.

Three legislators from the Janata Vimukti Peramuna (JVP) and two MPs from the All Ceylon Tamil Congress voted against the interim budget. The President presented the Interim Budget after Sri Lanka received US$ 2.9 billion in financial assistance from the IMF to overcome the economic crisis. It is said in the budget that there will be tax reform to help the weaker sections.

The Interim Budget has several tax reforms related to Income Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), Telecommunication Levy, and Betting and Gaming Levy. From September 1 this year, the VAT rate will be increased from the current 12 percent to 15 percent. VAT was raised from 8 percent to 12 percent last June. Tax reform is brought in to increase revenue for the government. Ranil Wickramasinghe said that many schemes will be implemented to help economically backward people.

Kennedy: Artemis One launches today. Artemis will be launched from the Kennedy Space Center at 11.47 pm tonight. The launch, which was scheduled for August 29, was postponed to today due to a leak in the fuel line.

Instead of passengers, 3 dummies are carried in the capsule in this mission. The rocket weighing about 46 tons will carry a 7700 kg capsule inside. NASA says that the rocket will reach the moon in 8 to 14 days after launch and will come back to the Pacific Ocean after about 3 weeks of orbit.

Afghanistan mosque blast; 18 people including a priest were killed

Kabul:  At least 18 people were killed in a bomb blast at a mosque in Gazarga, western Afghanistan. Prominent cleric Mujeeb ul Rehman Ansari and others were killed. The primary suspect is that IS is behind the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Herat provincial governor’s spokesman Hameedullah Motawakal has confirmed that 18 people, including the imam, were killed and 23 others were injured. He also clarified that there should be a strong condemnation of brave and strong religious scholars becoming victims of attacks. Some of the injured are in critical condition.

Mujeeb-ul-Rehman Ansari was a staunch critic of the US-backed Afghan government before the Taliban seized power. There were many controversial remarks from this priest, including the beheading of those who work against the Islamic government. SC and ST reservation for K-Phone free connection; Govt by order

Thiruvananthapuram:  Order of state government to ensure reservation in provision of free connection in K phone scheme. Ten percent reservation for Scheduled Castes and three percent for Scheduled Tribes has been proposed.

In the first phase, 14000 BPL households will be connected at the rate of 100 BPL households per constituency. 30,000 educational institutions will benefit from the scheme.

K Phone is the proud scheme of the state government. Earlier, the government had decided to provide connection to 100 BPL families in a constituency. If SC category is not available then 10 percent more will be given to ST category.

And if there is no ST category then that additional three percent will be given to the SC category of the same constituency. If there are no two categories in the constituency, it will be converted to a general category.

Walayar case; POCSO Court grants bail to accused

Palakkad: Bail granted to two accused in Walayar case. The first accused V Madhu and the third accused Shibu got bail. Palakkad POCSO Court granted bail. The CBI had found that the Walayar children committed suicide in the charge sheet. Considering this, the court granted bail to the accused.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Petta-SN junction road. Doubled Kuruppanthara-Chingavanam railway line dedicated to the nation. Renovation of three railway stations has also started. The Prime Minister said that the new projects are Onam gifts for Kerala.

The Prime Minister said that Metro New Path will give a new face to the development of Kochi. He also noted that traffic congestion and pollution will be reduced. The Prime Minister also explained about the Kottayam dual carriageway development. The project will be a milestone in the railway development of Kerala.
