Lunar 25 Crashes into Moon After Catastrophic Failure, Mission Failed Confirmed by Roscosmos

Roscosmos, the state space corporation of Russia, announced that they lost contact with the craft on Saturday at 11:57 GMT due to an issue during the craft’s transition to pre-landing orbit. The craft was scheduled for a soft landing on Monday.

It’s sad news for all space enthusiasts! It is with great disappointment that we are informing you that Russia’s new mission to the Moon ended in failure. After 47 long years, the Luna-25 spacecraft spun out of control and tragically crashed into the moon. This unfortunate event highlights the decline of Russia’s once mighty space program since the Soviet era. The State Space Corporation, Roscosmos, has reported that contact with the craft was lost at 11:57 GMT on Saturday due to a problem during the preparation for pre-landing orbit. A soft landing was scheduled for Monday, but unfortunately, this was not meant to be.

Roscosmos reported in a Telegram post that an abnormal situation arose onboard the automatic station during the operation, hindering the manoeuvre from being executed with the specified parameters. Roscosmos encountered an unexpected challenge while attempting to enter pre-landing orbit for its scheduled Monday moon landing. Despite the agency’s best efforts to locate the unmanned spacecraft, contact was lost, and a preliminary analysis revealed that it had collided with the lunar surface and ceased to exist. Rest assured, an interdepartmental commission will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident.

The potential ramifications of the Luna-25 crash are not expected to affect the timeline of Chandryaan-3, as India’s lunar mission remains on track to achieve a successful soft landing on the southern pole of the moon on August 23rd. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has officially confirmed the aforementioned landing date and has also disclosed the precise time of the landing, which is set for 6:04 PM (IST). On Sunday, ISRO conducted the second and final phase of deboosting for Chandrayaan-3.

Attention all space enthusiasts! The Indian lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, is on the brink of a historic success! The Vikram lander has successfully completed its second de-boosting and has reached the moon. This incredible achievement was accomplished at around 2 am, and the minimum distance between the lander and the moon is now a mere 25 km, with a maximum distance of 134 km. This is a momentous occasion for India and the entire world. The Chandrayaan-3 mission is a testament to India’s technological prowess and its commitment to exploring the mysteries of the universe.

According to a statement released by ISRO on X, the LM orbit has been effectively reduced to 25 km x 134 km following the second and final deboosting operation. The module is currently undergoing internal checks and will remain in wait for the designated landing site until sunrise. The powered descent is scheduled to commence on August 23, 2023, at approximately 1745 Hrs. IST.

ISRO has announced that technical tests will continue as the Vikram Lander is expected to achieve a soft landing at 5.45 pm on Wednesday, following the successful completion of the final stage. The landing site is located at the South Pole of the Moon, and the spacecraft will undergo a process known as de-boost to bring it to the closest orbit (25 km x 134 km) to the Moon. Previously, ISRO had indicated that the primary objective was to reduce the probe’s speed at an altitude of 30 km and land it on the Moon.

However, during the final deboosting phase, the Vikram lander reached an altitude of 25 km on the Moon. Subsequently, a horizontally moving probe will be turned perpendicular to the lunar surface, followed by the photo landing. It is noteworthy that Chandrayaan 3, which was launched on July 14, has already completed 36 days.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has reported that the Chandrayaan-3 Lander Module (LM), which includes the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover, has undergone a successful deboosting operation and is currently in a state of ‘normal’ health. This comes a day after the LM successfully separated from the Propulsion Module and set its course for a moon landing on August 23-24.

Deboosting process means the procedure of decelerating a spacecraft in order to establish a trajectory that places it in an orbit with a Perilune, the point of closest approach to the Moon, at a distance of 30 km and an Apolune, the point of farthest distance from the Moon, at a distance of 100 km.

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Lander Module (LM) is currently in a state of normal health. The LM has undergone a successful deboosting operation, which has resulted in a reduction of its orbit to 113 km x 157 km. ISRO has scheduled a second deboosting operation for August 20, 2023, at approximately 0200 Hrs. IST.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is currently vying to accomplish a successful soft landing on the moon, a feat that would position India as the fourth country in the world to achieve this milestone, following the United States, Russia, and China. The Chandrayaan-3 mission, India’s third lunar expedition, has outlined its objectives as encompassing a safe and gentle landing, rover exploration of the moon’s surface, and in-situ scientific experimentation.
