Director KG George passed away

Kochi: Director KG George passed away. He died at Kakkanadu Old Age Home. He directed films such as Panchavadipalam, Ukkadal, Kolangal, Mela, Irakal, Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, Yavanika, Adaminte Variyellu. He entered the cinema through the film Swapnadanam. The last film he directed was Ilavankodu Desam which released in 1998.

He received Kerala State Film Awards for films like Yavanika, Swapnatanam, Adaminte Variyellu and Irakal. In 2016, he was awarded the JC Daniel Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Film Industry. His wife is singer Salma.

The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha. The bill was passed to reserve 33 percent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies.  This is the 128th amendment of the Constitution.  The bill is titled ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’.  454 MPs voted in favor of the bill introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal while 2 MPs voted against it.  Voting on Billin was done by giving a slip.  The bill also stipulates that one-third of the seats currently reserved for Scheduled Castes should be reserved for women of that category.  The reservation is for 15 years after the amendment comes into force.  However, there is a provision in the bill to extend this period.  The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the first sitting of the new Parliament building. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reached the Lok Sabha to participate in the vote.  Rajya Sabha will consider the bill tomorrow.  Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Women’s Reservation Bill is a sign of respect and the beginning of a new era. 

Kerala’s dream project: Name and logo of Vizhinjam port unveiled

Thiruvananthapuram: Vizhinjam Port is now known as Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram.  Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan released the official logo and name of the port.  The first ship will arrive at Vizhinjam on the 4th of next month.  Thiruvananthapuram is also the official name of Vizhinjam International Port.  Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Kerala’s dream project is coming true.  Minister Ahmed Devarkovil said that the first phase of the port will be able to handle 10 lakh containers.  

Vizhinjam port is in PPP model.  But Minister Pikapalethum Rajeev said after releasing the website that the first P Public is the specialty of Kerala.  Now the long dream of many years will come true and the first ship will reach Vizhinjath on the 4th of next month.

Kurmi Agitation: Protesters blocked trains: Several trains cancelled

Ranchi: Many trains including Vandebharat have been canceled due to the train blocking agitation by Kurmi community members raising various demands.  Trains of South Eastern Railway and East Coast Railway have been cancelled.  Several trains have been diverted.  South Eastern Railway stated that 7 trains including Vandebharat Express, Howrah and Mumbai Turanto Express were canceled on Wednesday and 9 trains were diverted.  Kurmi protesters are blocking the train at 9 stations in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.  The Kurmi faction has announced an indefinite railway and road blockade, demanding that the community be given Scheduled Tribe status and the Kurmali language be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.  The Calcutta High Court Division Bench had criticized the Kurmi strike as illegal and unconstitutional.  Kurmi leaders announced on Tuesday that they are temporarily calling off the agitation, but the agitators have not backed down from the strike.

Manipur bandh complete for second day

Imphal: The bandh called by Meitei women’s organization Meira Paibis and local clubs to protest the arrest of village security volunteers has entered its second day in Manipur.  The organizations have called for a 48-hour bandh to demand the release of those arrested.  Educational institutions, banks and commercial establishments remained closed on the second day of the bandh.  Vehicles are rarely on the road.  At the same time, attendance at government appointments has been made compulsory.  In all five districts of Imphal, Meitei women are blocking the road with slogans.  Protesters have taken to the streets criticizing the police and the government for not being able to ensure law and order in the hilly areas.  Village Security Volunteers are selected to protect villages from Kuki and Zo attackers.  But the Meite women allege that the police are constantly firing tear gas at them and arresting them.  Last Saturday, the police arrested five youths who came with weapons and dressed like soldiers.  They were later remanded by the judicial magistrate.  Protesters surrounded the Porompath police station on Saturday demanding the release of the youth.  The police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.

No new Nipah cases for 4 days;  It was possible to stop the spread of the disease: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George said that no new Nipah cases have been reported in the last 4 days.  The minister said that the condition of the 9-year-old boy and 3 others under treatment is satisfactory and the spread of the disease has been prevented, but he has not been fully relieved.  Contagion occurred only at the primary source.  The treated baby became more responsive but was not transferred from the ICU.  Out of a total of 323 samples tested so far, 317 are negative.  994 people are in isolation.  11 people are in isolation at Kozhikode Medical College.  The health minister informed that the spread of the disease has been prevented and henceforth there will be a permanent surveillance system.

Thiruvananthapuram: Serial actress Aswathy Rahul got married to her co-star Rahul Ramachandran in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Trivandrum on September 16th. The couple, who fell in love while working together on the Malayalam serial “Ennum Sammatham”, looked stunning in their wedding attire.

Aswathy wore a designer saree , while Rahul looked dapper in a white kurta and dhoti. The wedding was attended by their close family and friends, as well as many of their co-stars from the Malayalam television industry.

The couple’s wedding photos and videos have been going viral on social media, with fans and well-wishers showering them with blessings. Many celebrities from the Malayalam film and television industry also took to social media to congratulate the couple on their new beginning.

SSLC Exam 2024 from March 4 Time Table ; Plus One Improvement Exams postponed

Thiruvananthapuram: SSLC Examination for the academic year 2023-24 from March 4 to March 25, 2024. The evaluation camp will be held from April 3 to April 17. SSLC Model Exam will be conducted from February 19 to 23. 1st and 2nd Year Higher Secondary Public Examinations from 1st to 26th March 2024. The exam notification will be released in October. The Plus One improvement exams which were scheduled to start on 25th of this month have been postponed. The exam will be held on October 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The examination was changed in the case of Kozhikode Nipah being confirmed.

The Plus One Improvement Exam will be conducted on October 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. 4,04,075 candidates will write the exam. 43,476 people are from Kozhikode. VHSE 1st year improvement exam is on 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th October. 27,633 students will appear for the exam. 2,661 candidates will write the exam from Kozhikode.

Minister V. Shivankutty said that the Department of Public Education is fully prepared to face the emergency situation in Kozhikode district related to Nipah. 100% of schools have online systems from today. All the teachers have been trained to ensure the G Suite system prepared by the Public Education Department for all the children in the district.

The minister said that the schools facing technical problems will take necessary steps to provide learning facilities for all children by using their own suitable platforms under the leadership of primary teachers.

Nipah: Strict control at Kozhikode Beypore Harbour

Kozhikode: Strict control at Kozhikode Beypore Harbor in the wake of Nipah. Boat docking and fish sales are advised to be suspended until further notice. After a native of Cheruvannur was confirmed to be sick, the control at Beypur Harbor was tightened.

It has been suggested that the boats that went for fishing in Beypur Harbor should be docked at Vellayal Harbor or Puthyappa Fish Landing Centre. A ban has also been imposed on fish trade in Vellail Harbour. 7 wards of Kozhikode Corporation and Farooq Municipality have been declared as Containment Zone.

Meanwhile, in the wake of Nipah outbreak, educational institutions in Kozhikode district have been closed indefinitely. A holiday has been announced for all educational institutions from Monday. The holiday also applies to Anganwadis and Madrasas.

The Kozhikode district administration has strengthened Nipah defense. Seven wards of Kozhikode Corporation and Farook Municipality have been declared as containment zones. Four people suffering from Nipah are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.
