Kerala High Court Rejects Plea to Cancel Dileep’s Bail in Actress Assault Case

0

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday rejected a plea seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Malayalam actor Dileep, who is an accused in the 2017 actress assault case.

A single judge bench of Justice Sophy Thomas dismissed the appeal filed by the State government, which had challenged the order of the trial court refusing to cancel Dileep’s bail.

The prosecution had alleged that Dileep, who is the eighth accused in the case, had tried to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence after being released on bail.

The trial court had rejected the prosecution’s plea to cancel Dileep’s bail, observing that there was no prima facie evidence to support the allegations.

The High Court, in its order, said that the observations made by the trial court in the bail cancellation order will not have any bearing on the main case.

The court also said that the prosecution has not been able to make out a case for cancellation of Dileep’s bail.

Dileep was arrested in July 2017 for allegedly conspiring to abduct and assault a popular Malayalam actress. He was released on bail in October 2017.

The trial in the case is currently underway in a special court in Ernakulam.
