Cargo Ship Containers Wash Ashore in Kerala; High Alert Issued

Kollam: Nine containers from a sunken Liberian cargo ship near the Kochi coast have washed ashore in Alappuzha and Kollam districts. Most of the contents from the containers, including orange-colored boxes, have spilled into the sea.

While police ruled out the presence of hazardous materials, authorities have warned of more containers drifting ashore. Some containers are still floating near the shore. Residents are advised to stay away and report any findings. The State Disaster Management Authority emphasized that the contents and condition of the containers will be confirmed after inspection. 

IB Officer Death Case: Accused Surrenders

Kochi: Sukant Suresh, the accused in the death case of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer, has surrendered at Ernakulam Central Police Station after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the High Court.

The court noted that the accused had multiple relationships and exploited the woman both financially and mentally. The deceased, who was Sukant’s colleague, was found dead near railway tracks in Pettah, Thiruvananthapuram, on March 24. Police stated that he drove the woman to suicide, supported by chat evidence. The court also called for an investigation into case diary leaks to the media.

COVID-19: Active Cases in India Cross 1,000; Highest in Kerala

New Delhi: The number of active COVID-19 cases in India has surpassed 1,009. Kerala leads with 430 cases, followed by Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), Tamil Nadu (69), Karnataka (47), Uttar Pradesh (15), Rajasthan (13), and West Bengal (12).

COVID-related deaths include four in Maharashtra, two in Kerala, and one in Karnataka. States like Andaman & Nicobar, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir have reported only isolated cases so far.

Karuvannur Bank Scam: CPM Leaders Named in ED Chargesheet

Kochi: In the second chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank scam, several prominent CPM leaders have been named, including former Thrissur district secretary M.M. Varghese, former minister A.C. Moideen, and MP K. Radhakrishnan.

The chargesheet, filed in the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court in Kaloor, accuses the defendants of embezzling ₹180 crore. However, Kerala Bank President A.K. Kannan and P. Biju have not been included in the accused list despite being questioned multiple times. This move comes amid the Nilambur by-election, putting the Left party under pressure.

Abdul Rahim’s Release Delayed in Saudi Child Murder Case

Riyadh: Abdul Rahim, a native of Feroke in Kozhikode, will have to wait longer for his release from a Saudi prison where he has been serving a sentence in connection with the murder of a Saudi boy. Though the victim’s family had granted pardon five months ago, removing the death sentence, the court imposed a 20-year prison sentence under public rights.

Abdul Rahim has already served 19 years, and it is expected that he may be released within a year. The incident dates back to November 2006, and he was sentenced to death in 2012.

CRPF Officer Arrested for Espionage for Pakistan

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer, Moti Ram Jat, for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence officers.

According to the NIA, the officer was actively involved in espionage since 2023, leaking national security-related secrets to Pakistani handlers in exchange for money through various channels. He was arrested from Delhi and has been remanded in NIA custody by a special Patiala House court until June 6. CRPF officials have confirmed that he has been dismissed from service.
