Madirasi Malayalam Movie Review

Producer– Jagadeesh Chandran

Director– Shaji Kailas

Cast– Jayaram, Meera Nandan, Meghna Raj, Tiny Tom, Kailash etc

Music– Satheesh Sujith

 Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

Shaji Kailas seems to have lost his touch. His last film, ‘Simhasanam’, was a let down. Now his latest, ‘Madirashi’, seems to re-iterate this fact. The film is a mess and disappoints you beyond all limits.

Scripted by Rajesh Jayaraman, ‘Madirashi’ tells the story of Chandran Pillai (Jayaram), a do-gooder and a widower from a village in Kerala. Bhama (Meera Nandan), who is a teacher, wants to get married to Chandran Pillai and be a mother to his son, whom she likes a lot. In the meantime, Chandran Pillai travels to Madirashi, which we are told, is a part of Coimbatore, to buy for his son a brand new cycle. There he is drawn into a very vicious circle when he goes probing the disappearance of Johny (Kalabhavan Mani), a police constable who too had come to Madirashi to buy a bicycle for his son.

Chandran Pillai has by his side Jayapalan (Tiny Tom), his friend and constant aide and Maya (Meghna Raj), a girl whom they come across on many occasions and who swindles him of his money in many ways. Helped by Jayapalan and Maya, Chandran Pillai sets out to combat some evil forces that suddenly come up to fight him and crush him to defeat. What all happens then forms the rest of the plot.

The first one hour of the film leaves you totally confused. It begins with a young chap (Kailash) getting kidnapped and then there’s all those seemingly nonsensical goings on in the life of Chandran Pillai and you end up getting confused. By the time it all goes on action mode, you are exhausted and the action part of the film too is handled in the worst of manners.

So, by the time ‘Madirashi’ comes to an end, you feel at the same time entirely spent up as well as relieved. You’re spent up having gone through all that in the name of cinema and you are relieved as it has all finally come to an end. Shaji Kailas’ ‘Madirashi’ is so unlike Shaji Kailas films of the past and is poor show, in all respects.

Performance
Jayaram struggles with a character that’s so poorly written and handled; he seems to be confused about what to do and also as to what kind of a film he is acting in. Just as we at the receiving end are confused whether to take it for an action film or a comedy entertainer, the lead players too seem to be confused, not knowing what they are doing or what kind of film they are acting in. None of the others in the cast have anything good to do and it’s all poor show, on the performance side.

Technical aspects

Nothing much to jot about the technical aspects of the film.

Music
The songs are unimpressive; the background score is just so so…

Script
Rajesh Jayaraman, who has made a mess of the script, had earlier scripted Shaji Kailas’ ‘Sound of Boot’ and ‘Time’. Those films had flaws, but compared to ‘Madirashi’ seem much better. The young writer could have handled ‘Madirashi’ either as an action flick or as comic entertainer. As of now, it’s neither here nor there nor anywhere. Same is our plight. Having spent our money and time on the film, we end up being as confused as never before.

Direction
Shaji Kailas should have shown better discretion while choosing the script. He has made ‘Madirashi’ in a way that it leaves us confused, wondering if it really is a film from the guy who made all those hit action flicks. Poor show, Shaji Kailas. Better luck next time!

Verdict- A mess of a film!!

Face to Face Malayalam movie Review

Producer- M.K.Nassar

Director- V.M.Vinu

Cast- Mammootty, Siddique, Kalabhavan Mani, Vijayaraghavan, Ragini Dwivedi, Roma etc.

Music- Alphonse Joseph

 Review By : Unni R Nair (Kerala9.com )

The posters had led me to expect ‘Face to Face’ to be an investigative thriller. It did begin on that note, but half way down the line it went for sort of a twist and then when it ended, it ended on a totally different note. But does that (and that alone) make me pass the verdict that the film is intolerable? No way!! It isn’t intolerable, I may say. But the kind of plot that V.M.Vinu seeks to narrate in the film, isn’t it a bit outdated? The storyline, especially the second half of the film, seems more like that of a film of the late 1980s or early 1990s. And there are flaws too. So, in total, though ‘Face to Face’ is not intolerable, it doesn’t leave much of an indelible impression on our minds.

‘Face to Face’ begins as the story of Balachandran (Mammootty), a shrewd cop who is under suspension and who is now busy doing real estate business and at all other times, boozing to his heart’s content. And then, a young chap, a terribly ‘bad guy’ and the son of an influential politician Varkey (Vijayaraghavan), gets murdered in the most brutal of manners. Superintendent of Police Ramadas (Siddique), with whom Balachandran shares a personal rapport as well, takes charge of the investigation, assisted by Circle Inspector Abdul Latheef (Kalabhavan Mani), who has always been an admirer of Balachandran. Ramadas wants Balachandran to be part of the team and offers to initiate steps to deal with the suspension. But the latter refuses and the investigation begins. Now, Ramadas, by sheer nature of his job, has Balachandran too among his list of suspects. This because Balachandran had had a grudge on the murdered guy, with whom he has had serious issues in the past. Balachandran faces Ramadas’ queries and convinces him of his innocence. Then we see Balachandran helping in the investigation by secretly making his own probes into the case and passing on information to Latheef, without Ramadas’ knowledge. But then, at half-time, you are destined to get a shock; something unexpected would take place and the rest of the film seeks to find answers…

Yes, I didn’t get bored while watching ‘Face to Face’, but all the same I realize that there’s not much, or to be precise, nothing at all, that remains etched on our minds once we leave the theatres. Hence a wasted effort, wasted in all respects. But I watched it with some amount of pleasure since ‘Face to Face’ was far better than Mammootty’s last film, ‘Jawan of Vellimala’. For me, the film seems watchable in parts too, but as a whole it’s far from impressive…
Performance

Mammootty’s presence is the only thing worth mentioning in the film. He has done his part with style and in a convincing manner, but the flaws in the script works against the actor and his film to a great extent. The others have lent able support and do their respective roles convincingly.
Technical aspects
Nothing negative to jot about the technical aspects of the film. The technicians have lent full support, they have tried their best to give the film a youth-oriented feel, but sans substance, ‘Face to Face’ staggers and fails to deliver…
Music

The songs are not that impressive by way of the lyrics and the tunes, but the director has pictured them in a trendy manner and I would say the picturisation is not bad, though not great either.
Script

Script by Manoj is the worst thing about ‘Face to Face’; incongruous parts that don’t sync together and sequences that could have been worked out better. The film could have been done in a much better manner.
Direction

Though V.M.Vinu is in full control and the film is not intolerable, the script that he has chosen to work on plays foil and the film, which could have made for a watchable film, leaves much to be desired…
Verdict- Unimpressive show, gets derailed due to poor script…

Amrita TV Celebrates Sabrimala Pilgrimage Season With “Saranapadham “

0

Amrita TV’s Saranapadham is a quest for spiritual salvation to Sabarimala, along a sacred path never traversed before, covering the history of the temple from the first installation of the presiding deity, traveling through centuries in time with the Pandalam royal family, Manikantan, Vavar and delving into the legends and lore, faiths and beliefs, rites and rituals related to the most famous Sastha temple in the world.

Complementing the religious fervor of the faithful during the Mandalalm pilgrimage period, Saranapadham beads together historical details, practical information, Ayyappa devotional songs, Sastha temple travelogues into a rosary of facts which will be telecast every weekday at 5 pm in the evening till Makravilakku on January 13th on Amrita TV.

The episodes go back to the mythological belief that the Sastha prathishta was done by none other than Parasurama in Mathangamala, as one of the five ‘panchashastha’ temples erected by the sage 5000 years ago, making it one of the earliest constructed temples in the country; narrates the exploits of the dacoit Udayanan and his horde of desperados who destroyed the shrine and shattered the idol, the Pandalam dynasty who adopted it as their guardian deity, the era of Manikantan or Ayyappa who unified the Vaishnavities and Shaivities, his inseparable companion Bavar who crossed the ocean in an Urus from Arabia, Veluthachen, instrumental in enrolling Manikantan in Kalari to master martial arts and the defeat of Udayanan by Manikantan and his friends, the punaprathista of the idol and so on.

On an informative plane, Saranapadham captures the amazing experiences of staunch Ayyappa believers, Guruswamys who have completed a century of pilgrimages to Sabarimala, near death accounts where faith alone saved the lives of devotees, narrow escapes from tigers on the prowl in the dense undergrowth, early films on Swami Ayyappa and accounts of the risks undertaken by the crew who braved thorns and stones to shoot the film on location decades ago; entertains with songs from the Ayyappa devotional albums of MG Sreekumar, Sharreth, Madhu Balakrishnan ; gives practical information on the traditional trek routes to the shrine via Erumeli, Vandiperiyar and Chalakayam, the geographical remoteness of the temple nestling in the middle of 18 mountains surrounded by dense forest, the stopovers enroute to the sanctum, the importance of the sacred Pampa, spiritual discipline required for the vritham, Lord Ayyappa as a symbol of secularism and religious amity etc.

Body and mind cleansed by 41 days of severe austerities, while the black clad Guruswamys trek up the steep inclines of Sabarimala toward spiritual realization, Saranapadham acts as a metaphorical journey inwards, to an affirmation of one’s own belief in the Eternal.
