Madurai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday launched the ‘Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme), an initiative providing 22-carat one-gram gold rings to newborn babies in state-run hospitals. Fulfilling a key election promise, the Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹755.83 crore for this welfare program. The initiative aims to honor motherhood, promote women’s health, and encourage institutional deliveries across public healthcare facilities in the state.
The scheme applies to native mothers of Tamil Nadu who are registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) portal and possess a valid Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID. It covers eligible infants born on or after June 22, 2026.
For the initial rollout phase, the government has procured 1.28 lakh gold rings. Each ring comes stamped with a unique serial number and is provided in tamper-proof packaging.
To cover babies born between June 22 and the launch date, distribution will take place across 107 state hubs at a rate of 100 babies per hub daily. Moving forward, eligible mothers will receive the ring directly upon discharge from the hospital.
