Thiruvananthapuram: Prominent cultural activist and former Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Soorya Krishnamoorthy, has passed away. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He had been undergoing treatment in critical condition for the past two weeks.
Born on April 11, 1951, in Kottayam, he was the son of the late P. Nataraja Pillai and C. Saraswathy Amma.
A towering figure in Kerala’s art and cultural landscape, Krishnamoorthy was the founder of the Soorya Stage and Film Society. He spearheaded the ‘Soorya Festival’, which has grown to become one of the largest art and cultural festivals in Asia. In recognition of his immense contributions to the arts and culture sector, he was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri.
