Dengue outbreak in Kochi; 660 people sought treatment for their symptoms

Kochi: Mosquito-borne diseases including dengue are spreading in the city. Yesterday alone, 93 people sought treatment for the disease.

In Ernakulam district, 143 people have been diagnosed with dengue so far. 660 people sought treatment with symptoms. More than half of these patients live within the limits of the Kochi Corporation. Two dengue deaths in a month are within the corporation’s limits.

An inspection by the District Vector Control Unit found that Aedes and Culex mosquitoes were breeding in the municipal area. Based on this, the district medical officer had directed the municipal health department to intensify preventive measures, including mosquito eradication. But municipal officials have not yet taken action in this regard.

According to the RTI, the Municipal Mosquito Eradication Squad ended its operation on March 31. The RTI also said that no new squad has been formed at present. The RTI states that Rs 25,000 was sanctioned for cleaning small canals as part of mosquito control activities but this work has not been implemented yet.
