Violated FEMA Act;  The Enforcement Directorate filed a case against the BBC

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate filed a case against the BBC for violating the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FEMA).  It is reported that the ED has also directed two senior employees of the institution to appear.  Last February, Income Tax officials conducted a survey at the BBC offices.  Income-tax found that there was serious irregularity in the diversion of profits earned by the business out of India.  This is followed by the intervention of ED.

The survey was conducted over three days in February at the BBC offices.  24 officers were tested in two shifts of 60 hours at BBC’s Delhi office and 55 hours at Mumbai office.  This is the first time in the BBC’s 100-year history that it has faced such an action.  The Income Tax Department explained that the survey was conducted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Rules and that the employees were not hindered from doing their work.  There was widespread criticism against this.
