Use of the painkiller methamphetamine: Center with warning

New Delhi: The center has warned about the use of painkiller Meftal. There is a warning that the use of this medicine can affect the internal organs and cause serious side effects. The warning was issued by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC). Officials also state that the ingredient mefenamic acid in the medicine can cause many types of allergies.

Mephthalene is commonly prescribed as an analgesic for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, toothache, and menstrual cramps. Many types of allergies usually develop within two to eight weeks. Its symptoms include skin rash, fever, and lymphadenopathy.

In a cautionary advisory issued on November 30, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission has asked health workers and patients to monitor for side effects in users of Meftal. Officials have also stated that there is a mechanism to inform through the website www.ipc.gov.in if any side effects are seen with meftal.
