Supreme Court stays Sedition cases

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said that the sedition law will be suspended till the government completes its review. Those convicted of sedition can approach the court for bail, the apex court said in its order.

‘It is advisable not to use this law until there is another review. We hope that the Center and the State will withdraw from registering an FIR under 124A, ‘said Chief Justice NV Ramana.

The plaintiffs had alleged that the law was being abused. The Attorney General had also mentioned the charge of sedition in the Hanuman Chalisa case. If new cases are filed, the accused can approach the court. The Chief Justice added that states should be instructed to prevent abuse of the law.
