Mallikarjun Kharge took charge as Congress president

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge took over as the 98th President of the Congress. Kharge took charge at a function held at the AICC headquarters. The function was held in the presence of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Madhusudan Mistry. Senior leaders like Ramesh Chennithala and VD Satheesan reached the AICC headquarters and extended their greetings.
Meanwhile, when Mallikarjun Kharge takes over as the Congress president, there are many peculiarities. Mallikarjun Kharge is not only the first elected president after 22 years, but also the first from outside the Nehru family after 24 years. After half a century, Kharge is also the leader who will reach the post of president from the Dalit community.
Kharge was elected as MLA in 1972. Subsequently, Kharge was able to win 10 consecutive assembly elections (1972, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2009) which is still a record. Kharge was Member of Parliament from Gulbarga, Karnataka during 2009-2019. Mallikarjun Kharge was the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha during 2014-2019. Rajya Sabha from 16 February 2021 to 01 October 2022. In between he was Minister of Railways and Minister of Labor and Employment. Mallikarjun Kharge was defeated for the first and last time only in the elections to the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019.
