Citizens’ birth to death data will be integrated into the Aadhaar number

New Delhi: UIDAI plans to provide temporary Aadhaar numbers to newborns. The UIDAI team will visit the families of the newborns and complete the procedures for registering their biometrics. When the child reaches the age of 18, the biometrics will be re-registered. This will ensure that multiple IDs are not generated in a child’s name.

The Economic Times reports that only a quarter of children under the age of five are registered in an identity database. UIDAI also plans to approach public and private hospitals for information on the dead to ensure there is no duplication. UIDAI will integrate data from birth to death of citizens into a 12-digit Aadhaar number.

The purpose behind linking an individual’s life cycle data to Aadhaar is to prevent the misuse of government benefits and to increase the spread of Aadhaar nationwide. The government believes that integrating data from birth to death will prevent the misuse of welfare schemes and leave no one out of the social security net.
