Burkina Faso announces army chief as President

Ouagadougou: Henry San Diego Damiba has been named president of Burkina Faso following the coup. The Army on Wednesday named Paul Henry Sandogo Damiba, a lieutenant colonel in the National Armed Forces and president of the Patriotic Movement (the official name of the army), as president of Burkina Faso. Damiba will also be the supreme leader of the armed forces, the statement added.

In another statement, the Constitutional Council announced that Damiba would be officially sworn in on February 16 in the capital, Ouagadougou. On January 24, Roachmark Christian Cabor, the president-elect, was ousted by a military coup. Under pressure from Burkina Faso’s allies in West Africa, the army withdrew its decision to repeal the constitution and lift the curfew overnight. But the issue of election dates remains uncertain.
