Rs 2,000 notes have not been printed in the country for two years

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur has said that Rs 2,000 notes have not been printed in the country for the past two years. Thakur informed the Lok Sabha in writing that the Rs 2,000 note was printed in April 2019. The minister said the decision was taken in consultation with the Reserve Bank.

He said that since March 2018, there were 3360 million currencies in circulation worth Rs 2,000. By February 26, 2021, it had dropped to 2,499 million. Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India had stopped printing Rs 2,000 notes.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the new Rs 2,000 notes on November 8, 2016, after the existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were declared invalid.
