New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Ahmed Patel, 71, has died. He died at Medanta Hospital around 3.30 am yesterday while undergoing Covid treatment. His son Faisal Patel announced the death on Twitter.
Ahmed Patel was a loyalist of the Gandhi family and one of Sonia Gandhi’s most important political advisers. When Sonia was the political secretary, the AICC he was in charge of organizational matters in Kerala as General Secretary.
In Gujarat, he is a three-time Lok Sabha member from his hometown of Bharuch. He lost the 1989 election. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1993 and member of the Congress Working Committee since 1992. He has also been appointed as the Treasurer of the AICC since August 2018. Although a stronghold of the alliance, it refrained from being part of the government.
His funeral was held today at Piraman, Gujarat. His last resting place will be near his parents’ grave.
