Supreme Court upholds reservation for Economically Weaker Section

New Delhi:  The Supreme Court has upheld the central government’s move to introduce 10 percent reservation for the economically backward classes. The order of the bench headed by Chief Justice UU Lalit held that the 103rd Amendment, introduced for economic reservation, was not inconsistent with the fundamental principles of the Constitution.

The five-judge constitution bench issued four separate judgments.

Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, who read the first judgment, said that economic reservation does not violate the equality outlined in the Constitution. Justice Maheshwari ruled that financial reservation is not against the fundamental principles of the Constitution. Justice Bela Trivedi, who read the judgment for the second time, agreed. Justice JB Pardiwala also upheld the economic reservation.
