Rape Cases Against MLA Rahul Mankootathil to Be Investigated by SP G. Poonguzhali

Thiruvananthapuram: Both rape cases registered against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mankootathil will now be investigated by a special team led by SP G. Poonguzhali.

Earlier, a special team under the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner had been probing the first case, which involves allegations that the MLA assaulted a young woman in a Thiruvananthapuram apartment and later forced her to undergo an abortion.

The case filed by a 23-year-old woman alleging rape will be handled by the Pathanamthitta Crime Branch DySP, while Kollam Crime Branch DySP Saniya will investigate the first case. An SP-level officer will supervise both investigations.

Sabarimala Gold Smuggling Case: A. Padmakumar’s Bail Plea Rejected

Kollam: The Kollam Vigilance Court has rejected the bail application of former TDB president A. Padmakumar, who is in judicial custody in connection with the Sabarimala gold smuggling case.

The bail plea argued that all board members were responsible for handing over the gold sheets to the accused and that the decision to record the material as copper in the minutes was made with everyone’s knowledge.

At the time the gold plating from the Dwarapalaka idol was taken for repair, Padmakumar had been serving as the Devaswom Board president. Devaswom employees had testified to the SIT that Padmakumar had pressured them to assist Unnikrishnan Potty.

Sabarimala Gold Smuggling Case: Main Accused Unnikrishnan Potti Seeks Bail

Kollam: Unnikrishnan Potti, the prime accused in the Sabarimala gold smuggling case, has filed a bail application in the Kollam Vigilance Court. The court will consider the application on Thursday, December 18.

In his plea, Potti has sought relief citing old age. However, the prosecution strongly opposed the bail request.

Earlier investigations by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) revealed that Potti was involved in land transactions worth several crores. Related documents had been seized by the SIT.

In the same case, the court is set to pronounce its verdict on the bail plea of former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president A. Padmakumar on Friday.

IndiGo Travel Crisis: DGCA Dismisses Four Senior Officials

New Delhi: In the wake of the travel disruptions faced by IndiGo passengers, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has terminated four senior officials working on a contractual basis.

The officials removed are those responsible for IndiGo’s flight operations oversight — Deputy Chief Flight Operations Inspector Rishiraj Chatterjee, Senior Flight Operations Inspector Seema Jamnani, and Flight Operations Inspectors Anil Kumar Pokhriyal and Priyam Kaushik.

Meanwhile, IndiGo is preparing to offer additional benefits to passengers affected by the recent travel crisis. Apart from compensation ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 depending on the delay duration, the airline will also provide travel vouchers worth ₹10,000. These vouchers will be valid for one year.

Time Extended for Intensive Electoral Roll Revision in Six Regions

New Delhi: The deadline for the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls has been extended in five states and one Union Territory—Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

  • Tamil Nadu: Extended till December 19
  • Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman & Nicobar: Till December 23
  • Uttar Pradesh: Till December 31

The final electoral roll will be published on February 21.

IndiGo Crisis: ₹10,000 Free Voucher for Affected Passengers

New Delhi: Following mass flight cancellations, IndiGo has announced ₹10,000 worth of free travel vouchers for passengers whose travel was disrupted on December 3, 4, and 5. The vouchers will be valid for one year.

As per the Civil Aviation guidelines, passengers are entitled to compensation of ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 if a flight is cancelled or delayed within 24 hours of departure.

In addition to mandatory compensation, IndiGo is providing extra vouchers. The airline also stated that refunds are being processed, including for bookings made through travel platforms.

On a single day, IndiGo had cancelled 220 flights, after which the DGCA summoned the airline’s CEO and officials seeking details on service restoration and refund processing.

Rahul Easwar Sent Back to Judicial Custody

Thiruvananthapuram: Rahul Easwar has been remanded again in the case related to allegedly abusing on social media the young woman who filed a sexual harassment complaint against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mankootathil. He was remanded after the expiry of his police custody.

Earlier, the Thiruvananthapuram Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate had rejected his bail application twice. The next bail hearing is scheduled for December 15.

Police stated that Rahul Easwar has not been cooperating with the investigation. They have not been able to trace the mobile phone allegedly used to record the video, nor examine his laptop because he has not shared the password.

UIDAI Plans to Ban Photocopying and Storing of Aadhaar Cards

New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is considering a legal ban on photocopying and storing Aadhaar cards. The proposal aims to end the widespread practice of demanding photocopies of Aadhaar for various services and instead move entirely to digital verification.

Verification would be done either by scanning the QR code on the Aadhaar card or through the Aadhaar mobile application. The objective is to completely eliminate the use of paper copies of Aadhaar.

At present, photocopies of Aadhaar are commonly required for a range of purposes—from booking hotel rooms to completing government-related procedures. However, experts have raised concerns that this practice can compromise an individual’s privacy and potentially lead to misuse of personal information.

The government has also noted instances where Aadhaar numbers of others have been illegally used for fraudulent activities. Moving to secure digital verification is expected to significantly reduce such risks.

Railways Announces Special Services and Additional Coaches Amid Indigo Flight Disruptions

Thiruvananthapuram: With Indigo flight operations facing disruptions, the Southern Railway has introduced special train services and added extra coaches on busy routes to accommodate passenger demand.

Additional services have been announced for routes to and from Kerala, including:

  • Hazrat Nizamuddin – Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special
  • Ernakulam Junction – Yelahanka (Bengaluru) – Ernakulam Special
  • Thiruvananthapuram North – Chennai Egmore –Thiruvananthapuram North Express Special

Southern Railway has also added temporary coaches on several scheduled trains.
A sleeper coach has been added to the MGR Chennai Central – Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Express until December 11, and an additional sleeper class coach to the Thiruvananthapuram Central – MGR Chennai Central Superfast Express until December 12.

Similarly, the Chennai Egmore – Kollam Junction Ananthapuri Express will run with an extra sleeper coach today, while the Kollam – Chennai Egmore Ananthapuri Express will have an additional sleeper coach tomorrow.

An extra sleeper class coach has also been attached to today’s Alappuzha – Dr. MGR Chennai Central Superfast Express.

In addition, a chair car coach will be added to the Thiruvananthapuram Central – Kozhikode – Thiruvananthapuram Central Jan Shatabdi Express until December 11.

Southern Railway said these arrangements have been made to ensure smooth travel options for passengers affected by airline disruptions.

Actor Dileep Acquitted in Actress Assault Case

In a major development in the Kerala actress assault case that shocked the state, the court has acquitted actor Dileep, the eighth accused. The court stated that Dileep was acquitted due to lack of evidence. However, the first to sixth accused in the case were found guilty. Ernakulam Principal Sessions Judge Honey M. Varghese delivered the verdict, confirming that all the charges framed in the case would stand.

Charlie Thomas, Sunil Kumar, and Dileep’s friend Sarath were also acquitted. The court will pronounce the sentence for the convicted accused on Friday.

The verdict comes after 7 years and 7 months of trial in the case involving the abduction and sexual assault of a popular Malayalam actress and the recording of obscene visuals. Pulsar Suni (Sunil Kumar) is the first accused, while actor Dileep was listed as the eighth accused. Other accused include Martin Antony, Manikandan, Vijesh, Saleem, Pradeep, Charlie Thomas, Sunil Kumar, and Sarath.

The incident took place on February 17, 2017, during the actress’s journey from Thrissur to Kochi, when she was abducted and assaulted inside a moving vehicle. The accused also recorded objectionable videos of the attack. Police investigations led to the arrest of Pulsar Suni and others. Dileep was later arrested after investigators claimed to have evidence suggesting the crime was carried out at his behest.

Charges against the accused included rape, conspiracy, and more than ten other sections. The trial examined over 260 witnesses and more than 1,600 documents before the court delivered its judgment.
