0

Idukki: The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam has risen again as the amount of water carried to Tamil Nadu has reduced. The current water level is 141.05 feet. At present, Tamil Nadu carries only 467 cubic feet of water per second. The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam had started declining due to low rainfall and low flow.

At the same time, the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam will not change for the time being. The interim order of the Supreme Court will continue. The Supreme Court accepted Kerala’s stand that there is no urgent order in the case now. For the time being, Tamil Nadu has no objection to raising the water level to 142 feet this month as per the existing rule curve. Kerala’s demand before the Supreme Court was not to raise the water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam above 140 feet. Kerala had demanded that the existing rule curve be rearranged.

However, when the case was taken up today, Kerala said it needed a detailed inquiry into the matter. For that, the case should be postponed to another day. Until then, Kerala has stated that it has no objection to the continuation of the interim order to fix the water level as per the rule curve approved by the oversight committee. The case was adjourned till December 10, accepting Kerala’s demand. With Kerala saying it has no objection to the continuation of the interim order, Tamil Nadu has no objection to raising the water level in the dam to 142 feet this month.
