Chennai: Orange alert was issued today in 10 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, amid heavy rains. The Met Office has warned of thundershowers in the state till 8.30 am tomorrow. Puducherry and Karaikal also received heavy rainfall.

Intermittent rains are creating a crisis as authorities try to avoid flooding. More than 10 cm of rain fell in many places. The Chennai Co-operation Commissioner said that these days are the heaviest rainfall in Chennai in 100 years. The rain continues as the hurricane is still close to the coast. The Chennai Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.

Srinagar: Twelve pilgrims were killed in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir. More than a dozen people were injured. A large number of people came to pay their respects on the occasion of the New Year. Many of the injured are in critical condition, hospital sources said. Authorities said that many people had entered the Vaishno Devi Bhavan without permission, causing congestion.

Omicron death again in the country; The deceased was a native of Udaipur

Jaipur: Omicron’s death has been reported again in the country. A 73-year-old man has died of omicron in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He was being treated at the hospital for high blood pressure and diabetes. On December 21, the covid test result was negative. On the 25th, covid became positive again and Omicron confirmed.

He died of pneumonia, hospital officials said. The country’s first Omicron death was confirmed in Maharashtra yesterday. A 52-year-old man traveling to Nigeria died on Tuesday. He died of a heart attack on Thursday after being diagnosed with an Omicron variant.

Omicron confirmed to 44 people in the state: Minister Veena George

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George has said that Omicron has been confirmed for 44 more people in the state. Omicron has confirmed Ernakulam 12, Kollam 10, Thiruvananthapuram eight, Thrissur four, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur two, Alappuzha and Idukki one each. Of these, 10 came from high-risk countries and 27 from low-risk countries. Seven people were infected with Omicron through contact.

In Ernakulam, four came from the UAE, three from the UK, two from Qatar, and one each from South Africa, Israel, and Malta. In Kollam, five were from the UAE and one from East Africa. In Thiruvananthapuram, one is from the UAE and the other is from Qatar. In Thrissur, three came from the UAE and one from the UK. Palakkad is from Nigeria and UAE, Malappuram is from the UK and Spain, Kannur is from Sweden and UAE, Alappuzha is from Italy and Idukki is from Sweden.

With this, Omicron has been confirmed for a total of 107 people in the state. A total of 41 came from high-risk countries and 52 from low-risk countries. A total of 14 people were diagnosed with the disease through contact. Those from the UAE were the most confirmed Omicron. 29 were from the UAE. All 23 people from the UK were affected by Omicron.

Big drug hunt in Kochi; 96 kg of cannabis seized by excise

Kochi: Big cannabis hunt in Kochi. 96 kg of cannabis seized from Kochi Edappally. The cannabis was found during an excise inspection conducted in connection with the New Year. Libin, a native of Chendamangalam, Paravur, was taken into excise custody in the incident. More than 96 kg of cannabis was seized during an excise check on the possibility of more drugs arriving for the New Year celebrations. Excise officials found a large cache of cannabis during an earlier search of Libin, a defendant in a cannabis case.

The first 2 kilograms of cannabis were seized from Libin. During the subsequent interrogation, Libin informed that more cannabis was handed over to Baby, a resident of Kanayannur who lives in Edappally for rent. Later, he reached his house in Edappally, but a man named Baby saw the excise team and ran away.  The search is currently underway for him.

Accused brought cannabis to Kerala from other states to sell for New Year celebrations and other occasions. Libin, a native of Chendamangalam, who was arrested in the incident, was remanded.

Gold worth Rs 1.5 crore seized in Karipur

Thiruvananthapuram: Famous film and serial actor GK Pillai has passed away. He was 97 years old. He died at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College at 8.30 am. He was admitted to the hospital the previous day.His first film was Snehaseema released in 1954. He has acted in more than 325 Malayalam movies.

The GST Council has decided not to increase taxes on textiles and footwear

New Delhi: The GST Council has frozen the tax hike on textiles and footwear. The decision to increase the tax from 5 percent to 12 percent has been put on hold. Indications are that the move follows opposition from the states. The decision was taken at the GST Council meeting held today.

The next GST Council meeting will discuss raising the tax on textiles. The GST Council has taken a crucial decision ahead of the new tax coming into effect on January 1. Several states demanded at the council meeting that the tax increase be frozen.

Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had held a meeting with state finance ministers ahead of the budget. The West Bengal finance minister had said that if the tax hike was implemented, about one lakh industries would have to close down. About 15 lakh people will lose their jobs. Industry groups also opposed the decision.

Puducherry: A month-long night curfew has been declared in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The restriction will be from 11 pm to 5 am. The night curfew was announced amid a rise in Omicron cases in the country.

The government said it was time for people to be extra vigilant and that a night curfew would be imposed from today until January 31. Social and recreational gatherings are also prohibited in Puducherry.
