Tamil Nadu Governor signs rummy ban bill after controversies

Chennai:  Governor RN Ravi approves bill to ban online rummy in Tamil Nadu. The governor has signed a bill that makes it punishable by three months imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5000 for playing online rummy. The Governor signed this bill after the Assembly passed a resolution against the Governor.

The bill is against online gambling. The governor’s signing of the bill comes a few weeks after on  March 23, the Tamil Nadu cabinet headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin again passed a bill to ban these games in the state.

Governor RN Ravi sent back the bill on March 8 stating that the state government had no power to enact such legislation. Later, he signed the bill after many controversies and criticisms.

Diversion of relief fund funds; Lokayukta will consider the review petition on Tuesday

Thiruvananthapuram: The Lokayukta will consider the review petition filed by the complainant RS Shivakumar in the case of misappropriation of funds in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The petition is for reconsideration of the judgment of the two-member bench which recently referred the case to the full bench. The petition will be considered by a bench comprising Lokayukta Justice Syriak Joseph and Deputy Lokayukta Haroon Al Rasheed.

The Lokayukta himself had expressed doubt whether the case against the government could be considered. Following this, the case was left to the full bench. But in 2019, a large bench headed by Lokayukta Justice Pius Kuriakos ordered that it has jurisdiction to hear the case after hearing detailed arguments. Referring to this order, the complainant RS Sasikumar filed a review petition against the dissenting judgment.

Attack on mosque in Haryana, 10 people arrested

Chandigarh:  A group of armed men attacked a mosque in Santal Kalan village of Sonipat, Haryana. During the prayers, people who came with sticks and hockey sticks attacked the people inside the mosque.

The incident happened on Sunday evening. Six people were injured in the attack. Police arrested 10 people in the incident. The locals alleged that some people unexpectedly entered the mosque and unleashed violence demanding that prayers be stopped. The church was also damaged. All those arrested are from the same village.

Sonipat Police Commissioner B. Satish Balan said that there were no problems at the place before and the violence took place without any provocation. He said that more police have been deployed at the spot and the situation is peaceful.

ED notice to VS Sivakumar

Thiruvananthapuram:  ED notice to Congress leader and former minister VS Shivakumar. The notice is part of the investigation into the case of illegal acquisition of property. The notice has asked them to appear at the ED Kochi office on 20th of this month with the documents. Documents related to assets should be produced. Vigilance had earlier registered a case against Shivakumar for illegal acquisition of property.

A huge neem tree fell in heavy rain and strong winds: seven people died; Five people were injured

Mumbai:  Seven people were killed when a huge tree fell on a tin shed in front of the temple. Five people were injured. The incident took place in Akola, Maharashtra. The tree fell while the ceremony was going on in the temple at around 7 pm on Sunday.
The police informed that 40 people were in the shed at the time of the incident. Five injured people are undergoing treatment at Akola Medical College Hospital. A huge neem tree fell due to heavy rain and strong wind. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condoled the death.

Covid Case increases; Center asks states to increase testing

New Delhi: Because of the increasing spread of covid in the country, the Center has asked the states to increase testing and ensure facilities in hospitals. These suggestions came up during a high-level meeting with state health ministers chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandavya. The meeting was held in the context of the increasing number of people affected by covid in the last few days.

The Union Health Minister also suggested that the Center and the States should work together to control the spread of covid. In case of an increase in the number of people affected by covid, the facilities in the hospitals should be ensured. Care should also be taken in the proper implementation of vaccination. The states have also been instructed to conduct a mock drill of Covid in health centers on April 10 and 11. The mock drill should be evaluated by state health ministers.

Train fire incident: Chief Minister visits the house of the deceased; Funds transferred

Kannur: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the homes of those who died in the Elathur train fire incident. 5 lakh announced by the government was presented to the family by the Collector in the presence of the Chief Minister.

The deceased have been identified as Rehmat, a native of Mattannur, his sister’s two-year-old daughter Suhara, and Naufiq, a resident of Puthiya Pura in Kottalipuram, Mattannur.

A passenger caught fire on the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express at around ten o’clock on Sunday night. About nine people including 3 women in the D1 compartment were burnt.

Thiruvananthapuram: In the next 3 hours, the Central Meteorological Department has said that there is a possibility of rain with thunder at isolated places in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts and wind gusting up to 40 km per hour. A warning was issued to fishermen and coastal residents too.
