Change in rain warning: Heavy rain in Kannur and Kasaragod districts;  Yellow alert in 8 districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Change in rain warning in the state due to heavy rains, severe rain warning has been issued in Kannur and Kasaragod districts.  Earlier, rain warning was issued only in 5 districts of northern districts.

 Apart from North Kerala, rain warning has been issued for Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts.  Heavy rain is predicted at isolated places in Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Idukki, Ernakulam and Kottayam districts.  Then yellow alert was announced in these districts.

 At the same time, the Central Meteorological Center has warned that rain will continue in the state for another 24 hours.  After that, the weather department predicts that the intensity of the rain will decrease.  Heavy rains are expected in North Keralam tomorrow and yellow alert has also been announced in Kottayam, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Saturday.

A 15-year-old boy died of brain-eating amoeba

Alappuzha: A 15-year-old boy died of brain-eating amoeba, a rare disease.  The deceased was Guruduth, son of Anil Kumar and Shalini, Maithara East, Panappally.  He was undergoing treatment at Alappuzha Medical College since last Sunday.

 The disease was first reported in Alappuzha Municipality area in 2017.  After that, the same disease is being reported now.

 Brain-eating amoeba or Naegleria fowleri is a non-parasitic free-living amoeba that enters the human body through the thin skin of the nose and infects the brain by bathing in drains or pools.

 Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting. The DMO has informed that people should avoid bathing in springs and stagnant water during the onset of rains.

Five people died after being struck by lightning in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: Five people died after being struck by lightning in Madhya Pradesh.  Three died in Durgapur in Panna district and two died in Tikamarg.  One person was injured.  Lallu Ahirwar (40), Lal Babu Vishwakarma (35) and Abid Khan (40) died in Durgapur.

 Both those who died in Tikamarg are farmers.  The deceased have been identified as Pyarilal and Danesh Raj.  They were struck by lightning when they stood under a tree to avoid getting wet from the rain.

Setback to Rahul Gandhi: disqualification will continue, appeal dismissed by Gujarat High Court

Ahamedabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi get setback in defamation case related to ‘Modi’ remark.  The Gujarat High Court did not grant a stay on the Surat Magistrate’s Court’s verdict finding Rahul guilty.  The verdict of the Gujarat High Court rejected Rahul Gandhi’s appeal seeking a stay on the magistrate court’s sentence.

 The court pointed out that Rahul was constantly repeating the mistake.  There are other similar complaints against Rahul.  About 10 cases are pending.  The High Court held that the judgment of the Surat Court in this case was appropriate and did not need to be interfered with.  Justice Hemant Pracha delivered the verdict.

 The Congress stated that it did not expect a favorable verdict from Gujarat and that Rahul will approach the Supreme Court against the verdict.  Activists raised slogans in support of Rahul Gandhi at AICC headquarters.

 The case is related to Modi’s remarks made in Kolar, Karnataka during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign.  The court had earlier refused to grant interim protection to Rahul and adjourned the verdict in the case.  Rahul’s appeal against the trial court verdict was rejected by the district court.

 It is reported that the Election Commission will start the process for the by-election in Wayanad constituency as the High Court has upheld the judgment of the trial court.

Artist Namboothiri passes away

Kottakkal: Artist Namboothiri, a unique talent in Kerala’s painting and sculpture arts, passed away.  He was 97 years old.  He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kottakal, Malappuram.  He was admitted to the hospital due to a respiratory infection.  He was being treated for several days due to age-related diseases.  He was admitted to the hospital on July 1. It will end on Friday morning.

  Public visit will be held from morning to 12 noon at Edapal Naduvattam house.  There will be a public darshan at the Thrissur Lalitha Kala Academy hall till 3 pm.  The cremation will take place at the Edapal house premises around 5.30 pm.

  Artist KM Vasudevan Namboothiri was born on September 13, 1925 to Ponnani Karuvattillath Parameswaran Namboothiri and Sridevi Antarjanam.

  He excelled in all the fields he undertook, including drawing, painting, sculpture and art direction.  He was famous for his cartoons.  VKN artist Namboothiri was described as the Lord of Lines.  He painted for the works of Takazi, MT, Basheer, Potakad and others.  At the request of actor Mohanlal, the painting based on Shankaracharya’s Soundaryalahari is very famous.

  Namboothiri has received many awards and recognitions which have given a new dimension to Kerala painting.  Aravindan’s Uttarayanam was talented and Kanchanaseetha also worked as an art director for films.  In 1974, he received the State Award for Best Film Art Director and the Raja Ravi Varma Award in 2003.

Heavy rain continues; Educational institutions in eight districts will have a holiday tomorrow

 A holiday has been announced for educational institutions in eight districts in view of the continued heavy rains in the state.  A holiday has been declared in Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kasaragod, Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.

 In Pathanamthitta district, the collector has declared holiday for all educational institutions from Anganwadis to professional colleges belonging to Thiruvalla and Mallapally taluks.  In Alappuzha District, the District Collector has declared holiday for all educational institutions including Anganwadis and Professional Colleges in Kuttanad Taluk.  Alappuzha Collector also ordered to stop the services of Shikara boats, motor boats, motor Shikaras, speed boats and kayak boats.  In Malappuram district, all educational institutions, including professional colleges in Ponnani taluk, will be a holiday on Thursday.  University exams and PSC exams will be held as scheduled.  The holiday applies to Anganwadis, Tuition Centers and Madrasahs.

The District Collectors informed that there will be no change in the PSC and predetermined  university examinations.  Kottayam Mahatma Gandhi University has postponed all the examinations scheduled for tomorrow, Vice Chancellor announced.

Misbehavior during flight: High Court notice to Vinayakan

Kochi: High Court notice to actor Vinayakan in connection with misbehavior during flight.  The court notice was issued on a petition filed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and IndiGo Air Lines as the opposite party stating that no action was taken on the complaint that the actor misbehaved during the flight from Goa to Kochi on May 27.

 The petitioner had complained that Vinayakan misbehaved by alleging that he had taken his photograph without permission.  Indigo Airlines’ stand was that they cannot accept the complaint made after getting off the plane.

Onam 2023 celebrations start from 27th August to 2nd September

Thiruvananthapuram: This year’s Onam celebrations will be held from August 27 to September 2 with elaborate events.  State level programs will be held in Thiruvananthapuram.  Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan suggested that the concerned departments should organize programs in a coordinated manner and make Onam a success.  The Chief Minister was speaking at a meeting held to discuss matters related to Onam celebrations.

 The Chief Minister said that state level programs should be planned in such a way as to attract people from outside Kerala. The procession should be organized with the participation of various government departments, public sector institutions, cooperatives and local self-government bodies.  Departments should prepare and present floats.  There should be Onam markets.

 Separate vegetable markets should be started.  Kudumbashree Markets should be organized.  Food materials including vegetables should be given at minimum price.  Horticorp should take special care to collect vegetable resources from farmers from Vattavada, Kanthalur and Wayanad.  Vegetables which are not produced enough in Kerala should be procured and distributed directly from farms and farmer associations in neighboring states with quality assurance.  Inspection should be done to control hoarding, black market etc.

 Talented talent should be mobilized in art and cultural programs.  The tourism department should take the initiative to provide necessary facilities and security to the tourists.  The Chief Minister also suggested that the concerned departments should hold a separate meeting and take a decision to organize the Onam celebrations in a grand and attractive manner.

Teesta Setalvad’s interim bail has been extended till July 1

New Delhi: The Supreme Court extended the interim bail of activist Teesta Setalvad.  The deadline has been extended till July 19 for the next hearing.

 The Gujarat High Court has approached the Supreme Court against the Gujarat High Court’s order asking Teesta to immediately surrender the forged document against Modi and others who were acquitted by the court in connection with the 2022 Gujarat riots.

 A three-member bench considered Teesta’s petition in the Supreme Court late on Saturday night in a special hearing after she was denied bail.  The Supreme Court also asked why Teesta was not given time to file a petition questioning the High Court order.

The High Court quashed the drug case against beauty parlor owner Sheela Sunny

Thrissur: The High Court quashed the drug case against Sheela Sunny, the owner of a beauty parlor in Chalakudy.  The action was taken on the plea filed by Sheela Sunny pointing out the result of the chemical test that the seized drug was not intoxicating.  It was already clear that Sheela was being falsely implicated in the case.

 Sheela was arrested by the excise for possessing LSD stamp and had to spend 72 days in jail.  Last day, the lab test result which stated that what was seized from Sheela’s possession was not an intoxicant.  The report containing this result is the case investigated by excise department. 

 The mobile phone of the suspended excise officer was taken into custody by the crime branch for implicating Sheela Sunny in the fake intoxication case.
